DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA MATERIA: This is a practical skills development course with numerous activities aimed at practicing reading and writing for business studies and business. Topics include areas of human resource, management, finance and accounting, marketing and a number of business analysis methods. Some of the study materials are authentic texts from the business world; others have been adapted or designed for the course. Different styles of writing from business studies and business are introduced. The focus of the course is on written English. 1

2 Apartado postal OBJETIVO GENERAL: Through this course the students will obtain a level of competence in business writings and reading by examining successful examples of student writing and work-related documents and reflecting on what makes these texts successful.. OBJETIVOS ESPECÍFICOS: To address the fundamental issues of Reading and Writing. Through this objective the student will be introduced to the three most important elements in Reading: a Topic, main idea and supporting details, which is applicable to the business letters and reports. Use supporting details in writing reports, graphs and letters. Use supporting details to convey the main idea of a piece of writing to imply the main idea. Identify the structure of what you read in order to identify what the author is trying to say. Develop comprehension of business and economic texts. Understand the language and concepts of business and economics found in magazines, books, newspapers and websites. Develop listening skills in fields of business and economics. Provide opportunities to express business concepts. Create his/her own style of writing. Use these skills to write more successful business letters, reports, forms and graphics. 5. CONTENIDOS The contents of this course will be addressed to the areas of reading and writing for business purposes. It will be involved with giving an overview of different business topics, introducing key concepts and relevant technical vocabulary through different writing and reading activities. The student through a workshop will form their own company applying the knowledge from the different reading and writing activities. 6. ACTIVIDAD/ CONTENIDO The following will be studied in the area of the skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking: 1. What is management? Selecting a CEO. 2. Theory X and Theory Y Satisfiers and Motivators 3. Company structures. Cultures in management 2

Takeovers, mergers and buyouts 13. Government involvement 1. Postal services 15. Applicable vocabulary for each above issue 7. METODOLOGÍA, RECURSOS: A learner-centered approach will be used. For all of the material in this course, the student will be playing an active-role, researching further and participating in classroom discussions and workshops. In addition the student will read assigned books and various articles, taking notes and reporting about their readings through summations. There will be several books for this course, and several handouts from different sources (books, journals, The Internet), which they will be responsible to copy. 8. 4 Apartado postal los estudiantes el resultado de dichas pruebas. - Solamente se tolerarán cuatro inasistencias por cada crédito semestral. - Art. 33 Podrán rendirse evaluaciones orales, u otros tipos de evaluación, de común acuerdo entre el profesor y los estudiantes y con la autorización del decano o del director de escuela. Para el caso de evaluaciones orales, prácticas u otras, se estructurará la prueba y se establecen los criterios de evaluación, que serán dados a conocer a los estudiantes durante la primera semana de clases 9.
