It begins by reminding people that the liturgical season of Advent is one of two penitential seasons in the church s calendar. The other one, of course, is Lent. Advent includes the four weeks before the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord. Lent is a forty day journey from Ash Wednesday to the Easter Triduum during Holy Week. A penitential season is a time for reflecting on the negative impact of sin in our personal lives as well as on the world in general. If you ask me, we are not in great shape. The games we play with God continue at a fast clip - we constantly engage in strategies to ignore him, hide form him or run full steam away. During Advent and Lent we are asked to slow down the pace of our busy lives in order to get our priorities straight and re-order our lives, putting God right at the top of the list. The spirit of Advent is to quiet down and spend more time in prayer, Bible study, spiritual reading and other acts of devotion. The Liturgy of the Hours, the Rosary or Novenas to favorite saints are other ways to draw close to God at this grace-filled time. Unfortunately the commercialization of Christmas has pushed aside the penitential season, leaving the month of December a frantic array of office parties and Christmas shopping ( the real Christmas celebration begins, not ends, on December 25). What better way to prepare for the coming of the Lord than to spend time in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Why not take some time out during each week and park yourself in front of a Tabernacle in a church near home or work or pay a visit to a church while Exposition is going on (here Exposition is on Fridays, after the 12:10 PM Mass to 3:00 PM)? Our Tabernacle here at St. Patrick s Old Cathedral was originally a gift of the School to the Parish in Since the Tabernacle has become tarnished and worn, the family of Helen Agro has made a donation in her memory enabling us to refurbish the Tabernacle and adorn it with gold leaf. Helen Agro died last week at the age of 84. She was well known and loved in this neighborhood and spent a lot of time here in prayer. Her husband lives on Broome Street where they raised up three sons: Wayne, Karl and Vincent who died two years ago. She now joins him in heaven together with the angels and saints. Helen s life was a journey of holiness on her path to be with the Lord. She is with Him now.

5 T he word Advent is from the Latin adventus for "coming" and is associated with the four weeks of preparation for Christmas. Advent always contains four Sundays, beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, (November 30) and continuing until December 24. It blends together a penitential spirit, very similar to Lent, a liturgical theme of preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the Parousia, and a joyful theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event. Advent Season The liturgical year begins with the Advent Season which starts four Sundays before December 25 and ends at the Christmas Vigil Mass. There are two themes to this season, both reflected by the term "advent" which means "coming." First, this season is a period to prepare for the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas), as we recall the first time that Christ came to us. Second, it is a time to reflect and prepare for Christ's Second Coming at the end of time. During the season of Advent we remember the long years of waiting by the people of Israel for the Messiah, the messages of hope in the prophets, and how Mary and Joseph were faithful to God's plan. Advent is not a penitential season, as Lent is. Advent is a time of joyful preparation and expectation. The Gloria is omitted on Sundays in Advent not as a sign of repentance, but to create a longing that will inspire people to sing it more joyfully on Christmas. Themes in Prayer and Scripture The scripture selections and the prayers of the liturgy for the season reflect the two themes described above. From the beginning of Advent until December 16 the focus is on preparation for the coming of God's Kingdom. From December 17 to December 24 the theme shifts to the anticipation of the birth of Jesus and his ministry. The gospel reading during each Sunday of Advent reflects these themes. The gospel for the First Sunday of Advent concerns Christ's coming at the end of time. John the Baptist is the subject of the gospel for the Second and Third Sundays. The gospel for the Fourth Sunday addresses the events that happened right before the birth of Jesus. The readings from the Old Testament, especially from the Book of Isaiah, speak about the Messiah and the Messianic age. Liturgical Color Since Advent is a time of expectation and preparation, the colors violet or purple are used in the vestments and decorations. Purple is a color that was reserved for use by royalty, and so it is used in Advent to symbolize the coming of Christ our king, as celebrated at Christmas and as we prepare for the coming of God's Kingdom. The third Sunday of Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is the Latin word for rejoice. The vestments worn on this day may be the color rose to symbolize the hope for the coming of Jesus. A time of prayer, penance and preparation The Advent Candles are placed in the sanctuary to remind us of the passing of time as we prepare for the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

6 Todos los años para esta temporada yo hablo mucho del significado verdadero de Adviento. Inicia recordandonos que la temporada Liturgica de Adviento es una de dos temporadas penitenciales en el calendario de la iglesia. El otro, por supuesto, es Cuaresma. Adviento incluye las cuatro semanas antes de la celebración de la Natividad de Nuestro Señor. La Liturgia de las horas, El Rosario o Novenas para sus Santos favoritos son formas de acercarse a Dios en este tiempo lleno de gracias. Desafortunadamente la comercialización de La Navidad ha echado a un lado la temporada penitencial, dejando el mes de Diciembre para compras y fiestas de oficinas. (La celebración de Navidad comienza el 25 de Diciembre y no termina ese dia). Que mejor forma de prepararse para la llegada del Señor que pasar tiempo delante del Santisimo. Porqúe no saca tiempo durante la semana y se parquea al frente del tabernaculo en una iglesia cerca de su casa o su trabajo haga una visita mientras está La Exposición del Santisimo. (Aqui la exposición es los Viernes, despues de la Misa de las 12:10Pm hasta las 3:00PM). Nuestro tabernaculo aqui en la Antigua Catedral de San Patricio fue originalmente un regalo de la escuela a la parroquia en el Como el Tabernaculo se ha deslustrado, la familia de Helen Agro ha hecho una donación en su memoria, permitiendonos a restaurarel Tabernaculo y adornarlo con ojas de oro. Helen Agro fallecio la semana pasada a la edad de 84 años. Era bien conocida y muy querida en ésta vecindad y paso mucho tiempo aqui en oración. Su esposo vive en la calle Broome donde ellos criaron sus tres hijo: Wayne, Karl y Vincent. Vincent murio hace dos años y ahora ella lo está acompañando en el cielo junto a los Angeles y Santos. La vida de Helen fue un viaje de Santidad en camino para llegar hacia el Señor. Ella está con El ahora.
