2 Welcoming Our New Music Minister I wanted to take this time to introduce to the parish our new Music Minister, Kathleen Deegan. Kathleen has been in Davis since 2002 and has led the choir for the 11am Mass for many years. She has also provided music for weddings, funerals, and other functions of the Church since relocating in Davis from Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Dr. Deegan is full time faculty at California State University of Sacramento in the Nutrition/Dietetics Department and has studied music for 48 years with the piano being her primary instrument. I hope that as we continue to thrive as a parish, we embrace all of our musicians and welcome Kathleen into her new role here at St. James. A Message from Kathleen Deegan: Dear St. James Community: Thank you for this opportunity to serve you with music. I am more grateful that you can ever know to be allowed to sing with you every Sunday. Father s faith in me as displayed by giving me this position is humbling and I will be working hard to deserve it. I asked to be called Music Minister instead of Director because this parish is blessed to have Choir Directors for almost all of the six choirs who are professional level musicians and have as much or more experience than me. The last thing they need is a Director. In fact, I invite each of you to share with me your thoughts on the role of music in the Church and ways to make it better. I see the role of the Music Minister as one of support, reinforcement, back-up, and facilitator. I will work to provide the tools each director needs to fulfill the potential of their choirs and their callings, be that, a good sound system, new music, organizational tools or pastoral music education. In addition, I will provide music support as needed by the other ministries of the Church. By hiring me to serve in this capacity, St. James is validating the role music plays in the liturgy and in the very life of the Church. It has been said that music is the voice of the soul. For me, music has always been and continues to be a source of inspiration that allows transcendence to a place where I can touch the Holy Spirit. I hope to be able to be a small part of that journey for you as well. Immigration Forum and DACA Discussion There will be an Immigration and DACA Forum on February 15th from 2pm to 4pm in the St. Ignatius room of the St. James Memorial Center. Speaker will be Amagda Perez of the UC Davis Law Clinic. February 28th March 1 st A Different Kind of Paper Drive The simplest products we use on a daily basis can be out-of-reach financially for many people. Our parish Society of St. Vincent de Paul will collect household paper supplies, and distribute to needy families. Un-opened packages of toilet paper, paper towels, table napkins, Kleenex, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, ziplock bags, and cleaning wipes are needed. This annual collection has helped hundreds of people in our community!! Please bring your donated item(s) to Mass with you on February 28/March 1 and place in donation boxes at the church entrance. Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter From February 8-February 14, homeless guests will be accommodated at the First Baptist Church and any assistance you can give there (food, serving, rides, overnight stays, etc.) will be most valuable. The website IRWS.Ivolunteer.com lists specific needs and opportunities. Prayers, of course, are always greatly appreciated.

6 Semana Nacional del Matrimonio 2015 El día 8 de febrero se celebra el día mundial del matrimonio. Con este motivo la Iglesia nos invita a unirnos en oración por una semana, del 7 al 14 de febrero, para pedir por aquellos que están unidos por el santo matrimonio. Unámonos en oración para el Señor siga bendiciendo a nuestra Iglesia y nuestro mundo con matrimonios sanos y santos y así tengamos familias sanas y santas. A continuación les comparto una reflexión sobre el matrimonio tomada de Por Tu Matrimonio. Matrimonio, base sólida de la familia Siempre escuchamos decir que la familia es la base de la sociedad, pero pocas veces nos damos cuenta conscientemente de que el matrimonio es a su vez la base sólida en el cual se cimienta la familia. Múltiples estudios psicológicos y sociológicos demuestran claramente que el elemento que más afecta a los hijos, positiva o negativamente, es la calidad de la relación que llevan los padres. Si entre ellos hay constantes discusiones, peleas, insultos y malos tratos, o si simplemente se ignoran y no llevan una relación abierta, amorosa y sana, los hijos crecen inseguros, inestables y hasta rebeldes. Por el contrario, si la relación de los padres es una de armonía, amor, respeto y comunicación positiva y efectiva, los hijos crecen serenos y felices. Realmente no es necesario leer ninguno de estos estudios para darse cuenta, por experiencia vivida, de esta contundente verdad. No pretendemos decir que debemos tener una relación de pareja perfecta para tener una familia estable y feliz. Todos somos humanos y en ciertos momentos cometeremos errores. Pero deseamos crear conciencia de la importancia de tener una relación de pareja sana. Es por ello que las Sagradas Escrituras, el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica y múltiples documentos eclesiales y teológicos nos indican la importancia del matrimonio para la familia, la Iglesia y la sociedad. Al meditar esta realidad, nos damos cuenta de que si el matrimonio está sólido, la familia también lo está; y si la familia está bien, la sociedad está mucho mejor. No nos sorprende entonces las enseñanzas de la Iglesia que nos muestran que el matrimonio (la unión del hombre y la mujer en una sola carne, unidos en el amor eterno de Dios) es el reflejo vivo del amor de Dios en la tierra. Por ello, si la pareja quiere tener una familia sólida, estable y feliz, debe primero desarrollar una relación conyugal sana en la cual reine el respeto mutuo y en la que el amor entre los dos sea el vehículo para ofrecer a los hijos, y por consiguiente a la familia entera, un ambiente propicio de amor y paz. ORACIÓN POR LA FAMILIA Señor, haz de nuestro hogar un nido de amor. Que no haya amargura, porque Tú nos bendices. Que no haya egoísmo, porque Tú nos animas. Que no haya rencor porque Tú nos perdonas. Que no haya abandono, porque Tú estás con nosotros. Que sepamos caminar hacia ti en nuestra rutina diaria. Que cada mañana sea el comienzo de un día de entrega y sacrificio. Que cada noche nos encuentres mas unidos en el amor. Haz, Señor, de nuestra vida, que quisiste unir, una página llena de ti. Haz, Señor, lo que tú anhelas. Ayúdanos a educar a nuestros hijos y a orientarlos por tus caminos. Que nos esforcemos en el consuelo mutuo. Que hagamos del amor un motivo para amarte más. Que podamos dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos para ser felices en el hogar. Que al amanecer el gran día de salir a tu encuentro, nos concedas unirnos para siempre a ti. Amén.

7 NUESTRA ÚNICA ESPERANZA...Mis días han corrido más rápidos que la lanzadera, y se pararon cuando ya no hubo hilo. Recuerda que mi vida es un soplo, y que mis ojos no verán más la felicidad. Job 7, 6-7 Job era a la vez rico y vivía en seguridad ya que había invertido en diferentes negocios. Sin embargo, en tres catástrofes, el imperio financiero de Job fue destruido en un día (Job 1, 14ss). Su quiebra no fue lo peor que le ocurrió ese día. En otro incidente no relacionado, los diez hijos de Job mueren cuando la casa en la que estaban reunidos se derrumbó (Job 1, 18-19). Más tarde, Job contrajo una enfermedad muy dolorosa: "una llaga incurable desde la punta de los pies hasta la coronilla de la cabeza" (Job 2, 7). Job tenía razón al decir "un trabajo forzado es la vida del hombre sobre la tierra, y sus días son los de un jornalero" (Job 7, 1). Él consideraba que en la vida no había esperanza y ésta era meses de miseria (Job 7, 3) sin gozo. La vida de Job no era inusual. Aunque son pocas las personas que reciben tanta desgracia en tan poco tiempo, múltiples tragedias son la regla de vida y no la excepción. Solo basta dar un vistazo a los miles de millones de enfermos a punto de morir, niños abortados, personas perseguidas, los oprimidos, los divorciados, los que lloran alguna pérdida, los exiliados, los hambrientos, los que viven en soledad y los rechazados. La evaluación de Job es correcta, pero no es toda la verdad. En Jesús, y sólo en Jesús, hay esperanza. Jesús nos ama infinitamente, nos perdona nuestros pecados, nos salva, cura a los enfermos, nos libera de los demonios, resucita a los muertos, hace que todo trabaje para nuestro bien (Romanos 8, 28), y nos lleva a estar con Él eternamente en el cielo. Jesús es nuestra única esperanza, y la única esperanza que necesitamos. Ya sea que la gente conozca o no a Jesús, "todo el mundo lo está buscando" a él (Mc 1, 37) porque todo el mundo tiene que tener esperanza y Jesús es nuestra única esperanza. Por lo tanto, "estén siempre dispuestos para dar una respuesta a quien les pida cuenta de su esperanza " (1 Pedro 3, 15). Oración: Padre, enséname cómo invitar a la gente al nuevo nacimiento: Al resucitar a Cristo Jesús de entre los muertos, nos dió una vida nueva y una esperanza viva" (1 Pedro 1, 3). Promesa: Y todo lo hago por el Evangelio, porque quiero tener también mi parte de él." 1 Corintios 9, 23 Alabanza: Te alabo, Jesús resucitado, esperanza del mundo! Anónimo LA PALABRA DE DIOS HOY Mis ojos no volverán a ver la dicha. Con estas palabras Job concluye su lamento al Señor. Era obvio que Job estaba profundamente desesperado. Sus palabras son un eco de cómo nos sentimos nosotros cuando dejamos que las luchas y desilusiones de la vida nos abatan. Sin embargo, el Señor Jesús tiene otros planes para nosotros. La sencilla historia en el Evangelio de Marcos sobre la curación de la suegra de Pedro nos demuestra que el Señor desea sacarnos de cualquier desesperanza en que estemos hundidos. El Evangelio es una buena nueva para nosotros. Si hoy es uno de esos días en que te sientes particularmente agobiado por una enfermedad o una desilusión, igual que sucedió con la gente del pueblo en la historia del Evangelio de hoy, pon todas tus preocupaciones a los pies del Señor. Con esperanza, pongamos atención al poder salvífico de la palabra sagrada de Dios.
