Nombre Hora Los Verbos Reflexivos Apuntes y Práctica Parte 1: Infinitives in Spanish end in - ar / - er / - ir. When infinitives have se on the end of them, they are called reflexive verbs. The se usually means oneself. To conjugate a reflexive verb: Take the se off the end of the verb Put it in front of the verb Change se to the correct reflexive pronoun depending on the subject Conjugate the verb to also match the subject These are the REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS me for the yo form nos for the nosotros form te for the tú form os for the vosotros form se for the, él, ella form se for, ellos, ellas form Práctica 1A: Fill in the blank with the correct reflexive pronoun. What do they mean? Me ducho. I shower (myself). Nos bañamos. We bathe (ourselves). He/she shaves. Se afeita. Se maquillan. They put on make-up. Te preparas. You prepare yourself. We comb... Nos peinamos Me cepillo. I brush (myself). Se arreglan. They fix/arrange themselves. Se secan. They dry themselves. Notice that the second part of the verb is conjugated with the correct ending for ar/-er/-ir verbs to match the subject and the reflexive pronoun. Práctica 1B: Fill in the blank with the correct ending for the verb. What do they mean? I get up. Me levanto. Nos lavamos. We wash (ourselves). Te pintas las uñas. You paint your nails. Paco se viste. Paco gets dressed. Te acuestas. You lay (yourself) down. I wake up late. Me despierto tarde. Ellos se duermen. They fall asleep. Nos ponemos las faldas. We put on skirts. se maquillan. You all put on makeup. Me baño. I bathe (myself). Te duchas. You shower (yourself). Juan se lava la cara. Juan washes his face. 1
Práctica 1C: Using the verb in parenthesis, translate the following sentences. 1. I take a shower. (ducharse) Yo me ducho. 2. He shaves. (afeitarse) Él se afeita. 3. We dry our hair. (secarse) Nosotros nos secamos el pelo. 4. Ana, do you polish your nails?(pintarse) Ana, te pintas las uñas? 5. Rosa puts on shoes. (ponerse) Rosa se pone los zapatos. 6. They get dressed. (vestirse) Ellos se visten. 7. I wake up. (despertarse) Yo me despierto. 8. Do you wash your face? (lavarse) Te lavas la cara? 9. We brush our teeth. (cepillarse) Nosotros nos cepillamos los dientes. 10. You all put make-up on. (maquillarse) Ustedes se maquillan. Práctica 1D: Write 5 sentences about your morning routine using reflexive verbs. Por la mañana, yo me o muy (rápido, despacio). Entonces, yo me o y me o. Después yo me o pero (yo) nunca me o. Generalmente yo_ me o porque * o. *This one does not have to be a reflexive verb. Por fin, yo me o. Qué día muy ocupado! Examples: me baño me ducho me peino me quito me acuesto me cepillo me lavo me pinto me seco me afeito me despierto me levanto me pongo me siento me arreglo me duermo me maquillo me preparo me visto 2
Práctica 1E: Practice conjugating these verbs. Remember to: 1. place the appropriate reflexive pronoun in front 2. then conjugate as you would any other verb. (Watch out for stem-changing or irregular verbs!) despertarse = to wake up (oneself) acostarse =_to lay down (oneself)/ to go to bed Yo me despierto Tú te despiertas Nosotros nos despertamos Vosotros os despertáis Yo me acuesto Nosotros nos acostamos Tú te acuestas Vosotros os acostáis Él se despierta Ellos se despiertan Ella Ellas e ie Él se acuesta Ellos se acuestan Ella Ellas o ue dormirse = to fall asleep vestirse = _to get dressed (NOT to put on) Yo me duermo Tú te duermes Nosotros nos dormimos Vosotros os dormís Yo me visto Nosotros nos vestimos Tú te vistes Vosotros os vestís Él se duerme Ellos se duermen Ella Ellas o ue Él se viste Ellos se visten Ella Ellas e i sentirse = to feel (as in emotions) ponerse = to put on (oneself) Yo me siento Tú te sientes Nosotros nos sentimos Vosotros os sentís Yo me pongo* Nosotros nos ponemos Tú te pones Vosotros os ponéis Él se siente Ellos se sienten Él se pone Ellos se ponen Ella Ellas e ie Ella Ellas 3
Apuntes y Práctica Parte 2: You can t have 2 conjugated verbs together. The first verb will be conjugated and the second verb is in the infinitive (-ar/-er/-ir) form. When the second verb is a reflexive verb (-se on the end), you need to add a reflexive pronoun. The pronoun can go in front of the conjugated verb or attached to the end of the infinitive. I am going to shower. Yo me voy a duchar. OR Voy a ducharme. We have to lie down. Nos tenemos que acostar. OR Tenemos que acostarnos. You (fam.) want to fall asleep. Te quieres dormir. OR Quieres dormirte. Paco can get ready. Paco se puede preparar. OR Paco puede prepararse. Amelia should get dressed. Amelia se debe vestir. OR Amelia debe vestirse. Práctica 2A: Translate. 1. We are going to wake up. (Nosotros) nos vamos a despertar. / vamos a despertarnos. 2. I am going to get dressed. (Yo) me voy a vestir. / voy a vestirme. 3. You all are going to polish your nails. () se van a pintar las uñas. / van a pintarse las uñas. 4. You (fam.) have to brush your teeth. (Tú) te tienes que cepillar los dientes. / tienes que cepillarte los dientes. 5. She has to brush her hair. (Ella) se tiene que cepillar el pelo. / tiene que cepillarse el pelo. 6. We have to get dressed now. (Nosotros) nos tenemos que vestir ahora. / tenemos que vestirnos ahora. 7. They want to dry their hair. (Ellos) se quieren secar el pelo. / quieren secarse el pelo. 8. I want to wash my face. (Yo) me quiero lavar la cara. / quiero lavarme la cara. 9. We can go to bed early. (Nosotros) nos podemos acostar temprano. / podemos acostarnos temprano. 10. You (fam) can shave. (Tú) te puedes afeitar. / puedes afeitarte. 4
In Spanish, verbs ( are / are not ) conjugated after a preposition (even though in English we do!) So when a reflexive verb is after a preposition, the correct reflexive pronoun needs to be attached to the end of the infinitive. (In other words, even though the infinitive does not change forms, the reflexive pronoun still needs to match the subject of the sentence!) Ejemplo: Después de despertarme, me baño y me cepillo los dientes. Prepositions: después de : after antes de: before para: in order to Práctica 2B: Write the following sentences in Spanish. (Some portions are done for you!) 1. Uso una toalla in order to dry my face. 1. Uso una toalla para secarme la cara. 2. Usamos jabón y agua in order to wash our hands. 2. Usamos jabón y agua para lavarnos las manos. 3. Before laying down, te cepillas los dientes? 3. Antes de acostarte, te cepillas los dientes? 4. Paco se peina el pelo after taking a shower. 4. Paco se peina el pelo después de ducharse. 5. Me pongo el desodorante before getting dressed. 5. Me pongo el desodorante antes de vestirme. 6. After waking up, we fix our hair. 6. Después de despertarnos, nos arreglamos el pelo. 7. Before polishing their nails, my sisters remove their jewelry. 7. Antes de pintarse las uñas, mis hermanas se quitan las joyas. 8. In order to fall asleep, the kids read a book. 8. Para dormirse, los niños leen un libro. 9. I take a shower after getting up. 9. Me ducho después de levantarme. 10. After feeling poorly, we don t exercise very much. 10. Después de sentirnos mal, nosotros no hacemos mucho ejercicio. 5
