1 GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH Church of the Good Shepherd 100 th Anniversary Honoring Our Past, Celebrating Our Present, Securing Our Future My dear brothers and sisters, please allow me to share with you the letter that I recently sent to Archbishop Timothy Dolan, sharing with him the good news of our upcoming anniversary. It gives me great joy to share with you the wonderful news of our parish s upcoming 100 th Anniversary and, on behalf of the entire parish family, to request your permission to begin a year long series of spiritual and social events aimed at helping us to celebrate the theme of our Jubilee: Honoring Our Past, Celebrating Our Present, Securing Our Future. According to parish records, Good Shepherd parish was established on May 1, The first Mass of Good Shepherd Parish was celebrated on January 1, 1912, in St. Philip s Villa, a residence leased to the parish by the Christian Brothers. The cornerstone of the first church was laid on April 6, 1913 and the church was dedicated on April 19, To accommodate the rapidly growing population in this northern section of Manhattan, a new, much larger Romanesque style church, with a seating capacity of 1100 people, was dedicated in We certainly hope that you will be able to join us for as many of our celebrations as your busy schedule allows, but most especially we invite you to be the principal celebrant and homilist at a Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving and Rededication of the Parish, which we are happy to plan around your schedule in the spring of Ideally, our first choice would be Saturday, May 26, 2012, the Vigil of the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please join us in prayer as we thank God for the many blessings He has bestowed on our parish in the past and as we seek His continued blessings on our future. We are grateful for your enthusiasm in your ministry here in the Archdiocese of New York. We appreciate your being a good shepherd to all of us, after the example of the Lord Himself. We look forward to sharing this important milestone in the life of the parish and the Archdiocese with you. Be assured of our continued prayers for you and your intentions. Pastor In case you missed it last week, I am enclosing the two special requests I made of our parishioners in last week s bulletin: In preparation for our parish s 100 th Anniversary, I ask each and every parishioner to please consider TWO VERY SPECIAL REQUESTS. (1) Please tell us the name and address of any former parishioner(s) of Good Shepherd who may have moved out of the neighborhood and with whom you are still in contact who may be interested in hearing more about our upcoming anniversary celebrations. This endeavor of creating a good mailing list is key to making sure that no one is omitted or forgotten. It will also ensure that we have a wonderful attendance at any and all events and special celebration associated with our Jubilee. Please use the form below to provide us with this important information. (Please feel free to use additional paper to submit more than two names.) All completed Mailing List Forms should be brought to the Parish Office or may be included with your offertory donations. Within the next week, you will also be

Consider which one(s) interest you! These are general categories and will be expanded once specific ideas have been suggested and decisions made. In the weeks ahead, a separate form will be included with the bulletin in order to provide you with the opportunity to sign up. It is my hope that the committees will be organized, a chairperson selected and at least one meeting be held before the end of the summer. A separate, steering committee will be formed with a representative from each of the other committees. Public Relations & Communications Secretarial & IT (Information Technology) Liturgy & Spiritual Events for Adults, for Youth Fundraising Special Events Social Events for Adults, for Youth Finally, please begin to think about particular events and kinds of celebrations that you would like to suggest for our consideration. Please be creative, but also be realistic! We won t be able to do everything that is suggested, but we certainly would like to do a lot! We also want our 100 th Anniversary celebrations to be the most memorable, reverent, enjoyable, and dignified celebrations that they can be! GOOD SHEPHERD SCHOOL REGISTRATION The school office will be closed from Monday, August 2 nd through August 11 th. However, phone messages will be retrieved. The office will reopen on August 12 th from 7:30 a.m. 2:00 p.m. Information regarding the beginning of the new school year will be posted in the church bulletin mid- August. Registration is open for grades Pre-K through 7 th. Please note that children entering the Pre-Kgn program must be 3½ years old. Please call the office for more information and for an appointment. TRAINING TO BECOME A BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP LEADER The Archdiocese of New York will provide a two-evening training on July 20 & 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at St. Jean Baptiste Church on 76 th Street and Lexington Avenue for people interested in starting a bereavement ministry in their parish. The training will cover how to run a parish-based bereavement group, grief dynamics, and serving members of the parish suffering from the loss of a loved one. For any questions or interest in this much needed ministry please contact Christina Schuerger, LCSW at (646) or christina.schuerger@archny.org. You must register prior to attending this training.

También asegurara que tengamos un buen número de personas que asistan a los eventos y celebraciones especiales asociados con nuestra Celebración. PASEO A SUNKEN MEADOW STATE PARK Los Cursillistas estarán auspiciando un paseo a Sunken Meadow State Park en Long Island el próximo sábado 24 de Julio. El autobús partirá al frente de la iglesia a las 8:00 a.m. y regresara a las 5:00 p.m. Cada boleto es de $20.00 y están disponibles con los Cursillistas.
