Rachel s Challenge promotes kindness, compassion Sixteen years later, Rachel s Challenge, an emotionally-charged program based on the life of Rachel Scott, has touched millions of students across the nation including those at Luis Munoz Marin School. Rachel Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School tragedy on April 20, Immediately following her death, Rachel s father, Darrell, began speaking around the nation, using his daughter s writings and drawings from her personal diaries to illustrate the need for a kinder, more compassionate world. Mrs. Nanci Zibell, a fifth grade teacher at Luis Munoz Marin School, decided to bring Rachel s Challenge to Marin School as a way to improve the culture of our schools by inspiring students to treat each other with kindness and compassion. Throughout her life, Rachel Scott had a habit of writing in unusual places. After her tragic death in the 1999 Columbine High School tragedy, her family found that Rachel had traced her hands on the back of an old dresser and wrote: These hands belong to Rachel Joy Scott and will someday touch millions of people s hearts. On January 16, assemblies were held for elementary and middle school students in grades K-8. Each assembly began with background information about the Columbine High School tragedy. Rachel Scott, a 17-year old junior, was the first person killed as she ate lunch on the school s lawn with a friend. But the message of Rachel s Challenge is far more than a warning about school violence. It s a message of Rachel s life and her personal goals of kindness that she set for herself and expected of others. A YOUNG LIFE WITH BIG EXPECTATIONS Six weeks before Rachel was killed, she wrote an essay for English class, titled My Ethics, My Code of Life. She wrote, I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go. Today, millions of students in schools across the country are infusing their lives with Rachel s Challenge. Her tragic death became a message of hope. In addition to the daytime student assemblies, an evening program was held for parents, community members. This program provided parents and community members with suggestions to help reinforce our students positive decisions, and asked them to accept Rachel s Challenge of kindness and compassion as well The Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club provides an opportunity for schools to partner with Rachel s Challenge to continue the chain reaction of kindness and compassion in their school and community. The club s main goal is to help sustain momentum for a positive cultural change in our school. Friends of Rachel Club trained graders, to empower them to start a FOR club at Marin School. Their first meeting with Mrs. Zibell, the Club Organizer, and other volunteer teachers and staff members, will be held Monday, January 26, At this meeting FOR members will choose projects to work on throughout the school. Students are very excited to build on Rachel s Challenge at Marin. Rachel was powerful; she knew what she wanted and went after it, she said. Everyone just needs to be nicer and step out of their comfort zone. You never know what kind of day someone is having or what they re faced with outside of school. Our schools should be a positive place.

15 CHILI NIGHTS WARM UP WITH BOOKS Fort Braden School Tallahassee, Florida CLIMATE OF PARTNERSHIPS Type 2 As any chili chef can tell you, sometimes a little pinch of spice is all you need to bring in the crowds. To increase parent participation in Title I Parent Meetings and the school s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), the Action Team at Fort Braden School took one parent s suggestion to conduct a chili cook-off event. Twelve teachers prepared their favorite chili recipes for the competition, which was held on the same night as a Title I Parent Meeting and a PTO Meeting. At the event, dubbed Chili Nights Warm Up with Books, the school offered bowls of chili for $1.00 per bowl. Everyone could sample the different varieties of chili cooked by the teachers or simply get a bowl of regular chili made by parent volunteers. Title I funds provided everyone with crackers, drinks, and desserts to round out the meal. A team of parents and community members judged the chili and the winning teacher received a much-coveted Chili-Pot Hat to be worn, triumphantly, at school for the rest of the week. Another big draw for parents was the chance to see their children perform. After participating in the PTO meeting with their parents and teachers, students from the school s second grade classes entertained everyone with a revue put together with the school s music teacher. Following the students performance, Fort Braden s principal conducted an informational meeting to give parents ideas on how to assist their children in learning skills to improve their academic performance during the last nine weeks of school. Parents were asked to encourage their children to read at home. They received information on how to help their children check out books from the library or read books online thanks to a grant to the school to provide books in electronic format. The response to Chili Nights Warm Up with Books was overwhelming, with 105 parents and 90 students attending. Wow! exclaimed the principal upon seeing the number of attendees. I wish we had this many parents come out for all of our parent meetings! So many families showed up that chili supplies ran low. One parent responded, It was great to come and not worry about having to go home and fix dinner! This was a lot of fun and great information. If a chili cook-off is conducted again, the organizers plan to make more chili to accommodate the crowd and change the judging system so that everyone has a chance to vote for their favorite recipe. They may add a book fair to the evening s activities to increase the reading resources for students and parents.
