1 MARZO 2015 Page 1 From the Health Office Dear parent or guardian of six grade student,all students entering 7 th grade are expected to have a complete immunization record which include a Tdap booster, 2 Varicella shots, a Hepatitis B series of 2 or 3 shots and a Meningococcal shot. Your student is also expected to participate in the full school program, including all physical education activities. A physical exam is recommended and a Physical Exam form needs to be completed by his or her doctor for this reason. If your child requires any physical activity restriction or other modification, request that the doctor include this on the form. If your child has had a physical exam in the past year, there is no need to for another one. Have your doctor completed this form from the previous exam. Please take the time to schedule an appointment and have these requirement/ recommendation completed. If you have any question, please contact us at or SPRING TESTING A friendly reminder to students and families that the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) are right around the corner. The MCA s are state tests in mathematics, reading and science that meet the requirements of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). They are given every year to measure student performance against the Minnesota Academic Standards that specify what students in a particular grade should know and be able to do. To find more information about the MCA test, please visit our website and reference the testing tab on the left. Prior to testing students will have time to take a practice test and work with the online item samplers to make sure they are comfortable with the format. Testing will begin on April 10 th and you can find the daily testing schedule on the top right hand corner of the Anwatin page as seen above. Here are just a few exciting events and projects coming soon: Family Night on Thursday, March 26th. Join the tutors for an evening focused on connecting with families and supporting student success! The Everyday Leaders afterschool class completed their service project with the Animal Humane Society and look forward to their next project dealing with hunger in our community. Students are finishing up ACCESS testing and will continue to receive additional support and attention from the tutors. For more information about this program please contact Anwatin Middle School # LITERACY TIPS FOR PARENTS OF MIDDLE SCHOOLERS 1. Read. Read. Read the most important means of improving reading skills is to encourage reading of all kinds 2. Visit places where reading is featured the library, museums, bookstores, etc. 3. Talk to your child about what he is reading or learning not how he is doing in it, but the actual content. Have him summarize or paraphrase what he is reading. 4. Bring books along everywhere - the doctor s office, the store, on trips, between games. Instead of a video game, bring a book. Or download a book application and order free books. 5. Help your child understand the difference in types of reading material. Just as middle-schoolers must adjust to juggling multiple classes and more difficult assignments, they must also adapt their reading skills. Science, social studies, and English each have their own vocabulary and structure, and students need to move from answering simple questions about content and plot to reading longer, more complex texts that require gathering and analyzing information. (http://www.greatschools.org) 6. Read the same books your child is reading. Then talk to them about the book. Ask Why and How questions not just factual questions. 7. Work with your child on skimming and scanning Not every piece of reading needs to be read completely. Have your child scan a newspaper article to get the main idea. Read the piece ahead of time and tell you child to find a particular point. Have them look for sub heading, main ideas in paragraphs, etc. Discuss when skimming or scanning might be necessary as opposed to reading every page. (Dictionary, Encyclopedia, phone book) 8. Have fun with words. Increasing vocabulary is one of the most effective ways to improve reading. Play with words. Learn a new word a day with your child. Do crossword puzzles. 9. Help your child determine at what level he is reading and find books at that level that interest them. As she reads more, she will increase her speed. Slowly increase the reading level of the books she is reading. 10. Learn a few effective strategies for improving reading comprehension There are stages of reading comprehension from Pre-reading, during reading, and after reading. 5 MARZO 2015 Page 5 HISTORY DAY 2015 WAS THE BEST YEAR YET FOR ANWATIN! We had over 300 students complete their research on the topic of Leadership & Legacy by creating websites, performances, exhibit boards or documentaries. Over 40 volunteers from the community judged the projects with impressive comments for our students. Over 50 students from Anwatin are moving on in the competition to have their projects judged at District History Day on March 21st at South High School! Anwatin's past and current success has recently gained the attention of the Minnesota Historical Society. Calling us a "History Day School" because of a broad commitment to transformational, experiential learning happening in your building Anwatin has been chosen as the FIRST Minneapolis school to participate in other history experiences -- like connecting with colleges, libraries AND going on history adventures! This year 70 students who had outstanding projects, but were not able to move on to the District level competition are receiving special acknowledgement by being selected to attend a field trip to either the University of Minnesota or an overnight retreat through the Minnesota Bound Experience! Congratulations to our History Day students and all of your accomplishments. We are proud of you ALL! 6 MARZO 2015 Page 6 DÍA DE LA HISTORIA 2015 FUE EL MEJOR AÑO PARA ANWATIN! Tuvimos más de 300 estudiantes completar sus investigaciones sobre el tema del liderazgo & legado mediante la creación de sitios web, presentaciones, tableros de exhibición o documentales. Más de 40 voluntarios de la comunidad juzgan los proyectos con comentarios impresionantes para nuestros estudiantes. Más de 50 estudiantes de Anwatin están pasando a la competición de distrito y sus proyectos serán juzgados el 21 de marzo en la escuela secundaria South! Por sus éxitos pasados y actuales Anwatin ha ganado recientemente la atención de la sociedad histórica de Minnesota. Nos llaman una "History Day School" debido a un mayor compromiso al aprendizaje experiencial, transformacional, pasando en su edificio, Anwatin ha sido elegido como la primera escuela de Minneapolis para participar en otras experiencias historiales--como la conexión con las universidades, bibliotecas y asistiendo a History Day Adventures! We were able to buy $ worth of books for our library! Congratulations to Sr. Bernardo Perez s Advisory Class for winning the REV UP for reading contest! They logged 3,502 reading minutes in 14 days!! Ms. Quimby s A1 class was a close second logging 2,515 minutes of reading. History Day activites have finished up in the Media Center! Way to go 7 th and 8 th graders! You did a great job exhibiting your websites, display boards and performances. COMING UP... March is Women s History Month! Teen Tech Week is March 8 th 14 th : Celebrate all the great digital resources and services our Media Center has! March 13 th is Digital learning day! The Media Center is sponsoring a bookmark design contest. Many Prizes will be donated by local businesses. Entry forms are online on the Media Center website or in the Front Office or Media Center.
