1 Holyoke Public Schools A Community Working Together Our Web site: Holyoke Public Schools Volume 6, Issue 2 Winter 2008 The new year brings budget challenges By Eduardo B. Carballo Superintendent of Schools Happy New Year to all! Welcome to our newest School Committee member, Howard Greaney, his interview is below. Our thanks and appreciation for Michael Moriarty for his years of service on the School Committee, both as an At-Large member and as Vice- Chair. The HPS main office held their second annual mitten drive collecting 356 pairs of mittens and gloves, hats and scarves that were distributed in the schools. We had some extra help this year from Holyoke Medical Center who collected two large boxes of hats, scarves, gloves and mittens Superintendent Dr. Eduardo Carballo talks about the restructuring plans at January s School Committee Meeting. which were given out to needy students. Another very successful Three Kings Day Celebration was held Friday, January 5, at Holyoke High School with close to 1,000 students, parents, relatives and friends attending this event. Many thanks go to the ELL Depart- ment, David Valade, Doris Ortiz, and countless others in and around the community who were instrumental in organizing this event. Saturday School began January 5 and will run through June 7 with sites at Holyoke High, Peck, Morgan, Donahue, Sullivan, White and Lawrence Schools. Our success with this effort has prompted other districts to contact us regarding their interest in setting up a similar program. The budget forecast and the lack of state revenues will have a serious impact on next year s school budget (FY09). The School Committee and I don t have any other alternative but to try to restructure the school system CONTINUED on page 9 Inside this issue: After School CONNECTIONS 2 Mayor Sullivan HPS Web site news 3 Oprah Winfrey to Lynch? 4 Community Fun Title I Event Listing Students Visit Statehouse 6 Talking Points 7 5 Holyoke School Committee Meet the newest member: Howard Greaney By Kelly Doktor Editor As if Howard Greaney s 34 years of service in the Holyoke Public Schools wasn t community service enough, he wanted to come back for more after being retired for the past five years. I felt familiar enough with how the schools run, so I talked to my family and decided to run for the at-large seat on the School Committee, said Greaney. After being sworn in last month, he has been appointed to two subcommittees; the Finance and Rules and Policy boards. Greaney names his ultimate goals as balancing the budget, improving graduation rates and keeping parents informed as soon as any information is finalized that will affect their children s school. My philosophy is if we continue to have athletics and extracurricular activities, this will help in increasing the graduation rate because those types of activities are the biggest drop-out deterrent, said Greaney. He also realizes those activities need to be within the budget. Greaney spent most of his 34 years as a teacher, as well as the Holyoke High School English Department Head and as an assistant principal at Dean Technical High School. The program provides social/snack time, an hour of homework support and tutoring with Holyoke Public School teachers and college volunteers, and, an hour and ½ of engaging enrichment activities. At the beginning of each eight week session, students can choose a new club activity for each day. Activities range from Culinary Arts and Gardening to Robotics, Fitness, Jewelry Making, and Outdoor Adventure. The program runs from 2:50 5:50 p.m., Monday through Thursday and is offered at no cost to parents. Students from 6 12 th grades are eligible to participate and transportation to the program sites from other Holyoke Public Schools is provided as well as transportation home for eligible bus students. This year The CONNECTIONS Program has benefited in many ways from the contributions of area college students. For example: Six students from the Psychology in Education Department at Mt. Holyoke have volunteered their time and skills to provide tutoring to students at our Holyoke High School program. Three other students from Mt. Holyoke worked with students in the Mural Club at the Kelly program to create a mural of a lively street scene in the cafeteria. Holyoke Community College s STEP Program effectively utilizes college stu- dents from H.C.C. as mentors in their weekly clubs at Donahue and Sullivan Schools. Zydalis Zayas, a recent graduate of Holyoke High School and current student at H.C.C. has been trained and paid by the Jr. Achievement Program to teach students at Kelly School. Cynthia Gerena, a graduate of the Holyoke Schools and soon to be graduate of Westfield State Teachers College has worked with students at Sullivan School to address environmental issues. If you are interested in learning more about the program, please contact Eileen Cavanaugh, Director, by phone at or ecavanaugh@hps.holyoke.ma.us. Registration forms are available at the front desk at each of the program sites. Students from Smith College teach girls from the CONNECTONS After School Program about engineering and design.

3 Volume 6, Issue 2 Page 3 HPS spirit continues despite budget adversity By Michael Sullivan Mayor of Holyoke I would like to publicly thank the Holyoke High School Madrigal Choir, the Dean Tech R.O.T.C. program, Holyoke High School Principal David Dupont, Senior Custodian Brian Harris and everyone else who made the swearing-in ceremony on January 7, 2008 so special. A fresh start for government is a wonderful time and I am thankful that we were able to celebrate it with the school community. It is a challenging time for schools as we listen to sound bites from Boston suggesting that 6% additional funding will be made available to districts. However, little is being said about the state mandated increases in retirement costs to the district. Nearly half a million dollars will be diverted from education to those retirement costs. I would like to make it clear I am not suggesting that we should cut benefits to retirees, but we should be cognizant when you hear that money is flowing from the Commonwealth. We must remember, sometimes what Boston gives, Boston taketh away. Particularly troubling is we are faced with closing schools to make ends meet. I can personally assure you that no one in the system is promoting closures, but we see it as our responsibility to maximize the dollars going to education instead of heat and other capital costs. I ask for everyone to understand the dilemma that we face and to work toward the best solution for our students. Please Mayor Michael Sullivan and School Committee Chairman William Collamore speak at a recent school committee meeting. do not miss any opportunity to advocate to our state and federal delegation for additional resources. As good as they have been, we should never be unwilling to request more for a community that takes on the challenges that we do or more importantly, that you do! Hands-on for Peck Students at Day in the Lab It was a cold and blustery day in November when eighteen students from Peck Middle School bundled up to have a day of learning at Hampshire College for the 22 nd annual Day in the Lab led by Hampshire College students, staff and faculty. The field trip was chaperoned by Helen Gibson, Director of Science for the Holyoke Public Schools, and Angela Fontaine, eighth grade science teacher at Peck Middle School. The purpose of this event is to recruit students from local urban areas to participate in laboratory workshops for the day in order to generate enthusiasm and excitement in the world of science. Students related their top three choices of labs to attend from a choice of about 10 different ones the day before they arrived. Some choices included Lotions and Potions, Creatures and Insects, Puzzles and Paradoxes, or Slime Molds and Bouncing Balls. The students also had the wonderful opportunity of participating in a computer animation lab where they worked on state of the art computers in one of the college s computer labs. The students attended two labs in the morning and one more after they had lunch. After that, student participants from all schools, which included Chicopee and Springfield, met in the auditorium where they were awarded a Certificate of Completion, physics toys, and cake and cider. The hope of the field trip is to show middle school students that not only can science be fun but it has a direct affect on their lives every day from video games to how the health and beauty products they use everyday are made. The participating students from Peck Middle School were an exceptional representation of Holyoke Public Schools. 4 Page 4 News anchor shares love of reading WWLP Channel 22 TV news anchor Veronica Cintron encouraged E. N. White students to never give up on your dreams. Speaking to an assembly of middle school classes to kick off the 25 Book Campaign, Cintron inspired and encouraged many with her personal story of struggle and success. Cintron moved from Puerto Rico to the mainland at a young age and initially did not speak English. But she loved learning, and she discovered reading very early. Most of the time, she read mysteries and non-fiction. She did not give any thought to a career in journalism until well after high school. She shared that she attended college in Florida and that she loves being a newsperson. Cintron emphasized to the audience the importance of reading now to help the prospect of having a good job in the future. Lynch Middle School An Oprah O Ambassador Members of Lynch Middle School s O Ambassador Club, The Helping Hands. Speakers Michelle and Gary are respectively each at the ends of the seated row. Poverty is like punishment for a crime you didn t commit reads a poster in the 8 th grade hallway of Lynch Middle School. Posters, reminding Lynch students of the challenges facing youth around the world, are everywhere because the school has been chosen as an Oprah (yes, as in Winfrey) O Ambassador school for the school year. This exciting honor means many things for the students of Lynch, particularly those 8 th graders chosen to be members of the school s O Ambassador Club, The Helping Hands. All students were treated to an assembly put on by two members of the sister organization to the O Ambassadors Club, Free the Children. Michelle; a former child soldier from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa and Gary; who grew up as a classic middle class rebel in Canada could not be more different. However, together on stage the two wove a tale of horror and hope about why they travel around North America to spread their message. Michelle was taken from his family at the age of five, blindfolded, given a gun and told to shoot. When the blindfold came off, he discovered he had just murdered his best friend. After a few years of forced servitude with the rebels, Michelle was reunited with his family, only to witness the rape of his mother and sisters a few months later. Still Michelle has put all of this behind him to work for Free the Children and the O Ambassador program whose mission is to give young people a venue to: LEARN about challenges facing young people around the world SHARE ideas and build friendships ACT to change the lives of youth in North America, Africa, Asia and Latin America The students meet weekly with their advisors, health teacher Kara Lunden, and 8 th grade Readers Writers Workshop teacher Lori Vaillencourt. Lunden submitted the school for consideration after hearing about the program. When asked why they call themselves the Helping Hands, Matt Goulding remarked that we are using our hands to help other people. The Helping Hands group decided to direct their fundraising efforts towards helping to build a school in Southeastern Asia., For more information or to make a donation, klunden@hps.holyoke.ma.us, or lvaillancourt@hps.holyoke.ma.us.

5 Volume 6, Issue 2 Page 5 Pathways for Success bonds families closer The Pathways to Family Success grant funds a family literacy program in downtown Holyoke. The Community Education Project and MSPCC work together with the Holyoke Public Schools to provide a GED preparation class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4-7 p.m. at the MSPCC Parent Center, 230 Maple Street. Between parents attend the class and many bring their children. A family dinner is served, children are helped with homework and then participate in other age appropriate activities while their parents are studying. During the last cycle, families attended the early childhood family literacy night, a Kimbombó theater presentation about HIV/AIDS, and participated in a Parranda to City Hall to sing to Mayor Sullivan. Parents learn more about reading with their children and ways to support their children s education. A counselor helps parents with any family support issues, goal setting and applying for college. If you are interested in attending this program, please call Frances at or Jody at for more information. Above Simon Surrette and his mom Dayna Abrazinski, as well as brothers Mike Rojas and Leonardo Concepcion are busy making and playing math and reading games at Lawrence School s Games To Go night. The event was on a particularly cold January evening, but that didn t stop more than 70 family members from attending. A variety of materials was provided so families could learn how to play and enjoy the games at home. The event was sponsored by the Title I program. 6 Page 6 Science and fun at Hazen Paper Every student at Lawrence School is learning the power of words from one of their favorite authors: E.B. White. Every class is listening to daily read alouds from E.B. White s most wellknown books, Charlotte s Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan. The school-wide read aloud program completed Charlotte s Web in December and is now in the middle of the adventures of Stuart Little. Each day begins with three selected words from the chapter being read in class. Diminutive, exasperated, and idiosyncracy are just a few of the higher level words that students are hearing and using in their classrooms. At 9:05 each morning, two students from a classroom read, define, and use the words in sentences over the intercom to the entire school. As teachers read a new chapter during the day, students are encouraged to use the new words in their speaking and writing, and to look for the words in their reading. Posters of the words are hung in classrooms, hallways and the cafeteria to encourage their recognition. Art projects, spelling bees and word games have inspired students to make connections and use new words in their everyday language. Some of these words have even been overheard in some cafeteria conversations! When asked about this project, some students borrowed a few words from E. B. White himself: Miraculous! Fascinating! Remarkable! H.B. Lawrence 5th graders enjoyed a day of hands-on learning at Hazen Paper Company in Holyoke in mid- January. Each of the three 5 th grade classrooms spent their day at the factory engaged in various learning activities that taught science concepts related to the fifth grade science curriculum. States of matter, the water cycle, and simple machines were explored with the use of games, models, hands on activities, and student dialogue. During a tour of the paper plant students were challenged to identify geometric shapes, such as cylinders, cubes, and cones that they saw throughout the plant. Hazen Paper gave each student a package of designed paper, made at the plant, and as a culminating activity, every child got to make a piece of paper, all of which were taken home at the end of the day. First grade students received a visit from CBS Channel 3 meteorologist Brandon Butcher as a part of the recent weather unit. The children learned about the different kinds of weather, weather safety, and how to capture weather on video. Student Jeremy Hoar said, I learned about lightning and how to be safe in a storm. The winners of Maurice A. Donahue school s recent volleyball essay contest for students in grades 4-8 stand in front of a painting of Maurice A. Donahue at the State House in Boston. The students wrote persuasive essays to designate volleyball the official recreational and team sport of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Students read part of their essays in a legislative hearing which completed the first step in the legislation process. CONTINUED from page 1 into a smaller, more efficient school district. We want you to understand that none of us want to do this, but in the end would rather spend less money on maintaining partially empty buildings and use the funds to save teachers and many services. Whatever happens will be done with our best intentions and interests on behalf of all the students and parents of the City of Holyoke. Rest assured that whatever the School Committee decides to do, it will be done in a timely fashion so that parents and students will have time to prepare well before the start of school in September. As I travel the schools and visit classrooms, I am very pleased with the wonderful work going on in our classrooms and observing the students and teachers engaged in a very purposeful manner. There is no doubt in my mind that we have committed ourselves to a learning culture in the Holyoke Public Schools. Over the next several weeks, our students will again be challenged by the MCAS Assessment and I look forward to their outstanding performance and their continued improvement will be the direct result of all your efforts.
