1 Attendance Line: THOMPSON MIDDLE SCHOOL FRIDAY FORECAST Main Office: June 1, 2012 FROM PRINCIPAL STEVE MORRIL This will be my final Forecast message of the school year, so I d like to take time to extend a message of appreciation to our entire school community. I believe that this has been a year of significant student achievement and learning by all. From my perspective, it has been an incredibly positive and productive year. I also know that the success of this year is the result of all stake holders. We have great students, parents, and staff. All of these groups have played an integral role in the success of this year. THANK YOU! A Farewell to 8th Graders To the students and families of the Thompson graduating class of 2012: You have represented Thompson Middle School very well. As we finish this school year, the impressions and memories this 8th grade class is leaving are positive and will be lasting. Selfishly, I will always remember this 8th grade class specifically, as we came to Thompson together 3 years ago. The high schools have already heard about how solid a group of students they have on the way. The high schools are looking forward to our incoming parent population as well. I know you will continue to be involved in your children s education. I encourage you to stay involved as your student enters high school. As parents you will always be an influential voice in your child s experiences. Enjoy your high school years. They will undoubtedly fly by. To all, enjoy a productive and safe summer~ Graduation Eighth Grade Graduation will be Monday, June 4th at 7:00 pm at Thompson Middle School. We are planning to hold this event outside at Reid Field, weather permitting. If weather does not allow, we will hold this event in the Thompson Gym. New Math Curriculum Have you heard the buzz? D303 has adopted a new math curriculum that will be implemented for the coming school year. We are all looking forward to seeing that the efforts of our math teachers over the past year will come to realization soon. As you may have heard, the curriculum is more rigorous and will move at a faster pace. In addition, it is designed for students to think mathematically with an increased emphasis on math reasoning, collaboration, communication, and critical think when problem solving. In an effort to support students as they transition to our new math curriculum, district teachers have created optional summer math homework for middle school students. The homework is attached and can also be found on our Thompson webpage titled, Math Online Summer Homework. The links and assignments are easy to access and do not involve a password. Although this work is not required, it is highly recommended that students preview and/or review important math concepts as they prepare for the new curriculum in the fall. Thompson is very proud of our students and teachers and our past successes in mathematics. We also want to ensure that we continue to move forward as we include college readiness and 21st Century Standards in the work we do. Please take a look at the summer homework and encourage your student to challenge themselves as they prepare for the exciting and rigorous math work they will encounter next year. Regarding In-School Medication Pick-Up and Forms for Next Year: All medication currently stored in the nurse s office must be picked up by a parent before June 5, Only those students with permission to self-carry their inhalers or epi-pens can take their own medication home. All medication NOT picked up by this date will be disposed of. This includes inhalers, epi-pens, daily medication, and as needed medications. If you have any questions please contact me. Medication forms for the school year can be found on the district website. Go to Departments; Go to Health Services Daily medication forms, self-administration medication forms for asthma and epi-pens, as well as as needed medication forms can be found on this site. Please return form, signed by a physician AND parent, along with medication to the TMS school nurse prior to the start of school. If you are unable to retrieve the medication form off of a computer, you may pick up a form in the main office all summer (specify which form you need), or contact me for other arrangements before the end of the school year. I will be back with limited hours beginning in early August. Please contact me if your child has a health concern you need to discuss with me. Diane Isbrandt RN, BSN,, Certified School Nurse Thompson Middle School - diane.isbrandt@d303.org / (fax) PTO TODAY As I complete my two year term as the TMS PTO president, I would like to thank all of the parents for their gracious support in making Thompson a great place for our children to grow and to learn. As parents, it is easy to believe that a middle school student doesn t need our support. Surprisingly, it is probably one of the most important times when our children need us most. As our children go through adolescence, the support is different than in elementary school. PTO allows us an organized forum to help support our teachers and staff. By being involved parents, it allows our teachers even more time to be impactful on our children as they begin to show their independence. To understand the middle school student, staff, building, etc., Mr. Morrill, principal, attends every PTO meeting and gives a report on the happenings of the school. Therefore, the support from teachers, parents, administration, and students is represented monthly. To make our parent support organized and successful, I would like to say thank you to the board members who have helped these past two years: Caryn Sastre, Joni DeDobbalaere, Chris Spence, Kelly McLean, Cindy Pudlik, Gina Robinson, Stephanie Porteous, and Colleen Jones. Also, a special thanks to all of the gracious committee chairmen who have implemented so many projects. In addition, a wonderful thank you to every parent who has been able to be a part of their child s life either at TMS or through your support at home!
2 In closing, a heartfelt thank you to all staff and administration at TMS who put countless hours into building successes for our children. Henry Adams says, A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. We invite you to join us next year, as PTO meetings will be the first Tuesday of the month from 9:00 am to10:30 am at TMS. Our new board will be: Stephanie Porteous, President; Caryn Sastre, VP Volunteers; Regina Wright, VP Fundraising; Amy Conrad, Secretary; and Kelly McLean, Treasurer. They have started generating new ideas already and look forward to your support in Acuity Assessment ITS and Acuity have been working on the issue of accessing the Acuity Assessment system from home. We believe we have resolved those issues. When accessing Acuity from home please use this web address only: The login and password for the Acuity system will be your student s district login and password. (NOTE: A link for the Acuity system is also located on the LRC Research Links Page of our TMS website) Thank you for your patience while we worked through this issue. Lost and Found Please have your child check the lost and found for any items they may be missing. It is overflowing with winter clothing items that have not yet been claimed. All items will be donated to a local charity at the end of the school year.
Henry Adams dice, A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. Watts. 6 Thompson Middle School Math Online Summer Homework For the school year, District 303 is adopting a new math curriculum based on the Common Core Standards. The Common Core Standards have been adopted by nearly all states in our country. They are designed to guide students to a deeper understanding of mathematics and help them develop problem solving and reasoning skills. Because the new curriculum will be more rigorous and move at a faster pace, we recommend all students review and/or preview the skills outlined for each grade level over the summer in preparation for the coming year. To support the learning of our students, we will be using a new math resource called Big Ideas Math. We are excited about the online capabilities of the program. Parents and students can easily access the textbook, instructional videos, virtual manipulatives, games, and guided practice worksheets with answer keys on the publisher s website. ( These resources are easily accessible to any user and do not require a login or password. Practice worksheets and the online video tutorials can be found on the Big Ideas Math website. We ve also listed Khan Academy as an additional online resource. This website contains numerous math instructional videos. Guided instructions for each website are below.
