4 First Sunday of Lent February 22nd, 2015 Genesis 9:8-15; 1 Petr 3:18-22; Mark 1:12-15 Psalm 25 Primer Domingo de Cuaresma 22 de Febrero del 2015 Génesis 9:8-15; 1 Pedro 3:18-22; Marcos 1:12-15 Salmo 25 [24] Dear Families: Today the Catholic Church begins the liturgical season of Lent the authentic quarantine of the spirit. Original sin wounded man s nature, and, furthermore, at the hands of sinful men, the world in which we live has been tainted. Spiritual quarantine is imposed on all men. Temporary isolation of spirit is necessary for individual and collective spiritual health, the time out to review both, the personal and communal human behavior. As Christians, we are reminded, in this season of Lent, of the need to review our baptismal options. Today's Gospel shows us Jesus practicing the quarantine or isolation of the spirit in the desert, as an example to us. We continue to hear, from his lips, the proclamation of the Kingdom inviting us to conversion: "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel." (Mk 1:15). Lent, on the one hand, prepares us for the annual celebration of the redemptive sacrifice of Christ (Easter), earned for us through a set of goods given by Christ that identify with the kingdom, some of which (revelation, redemption, filial adoption, Church, sacraments) we already have, although the main one (eternal life with God in heaven) is yet to come, while we live here on earth. On the other hand, Lent invites us to continual conversion. We continually need conversion, because the devil, the world and the flesh with its temptations persistently tries to steer us away from the path that leads to God. Jesus would be tempted to encourage us, in this fight, and to teach us to overcome temptation with prayer, penance and meditation on the Word of God. With the joy of being loved by God, let us undertake the Lenten journey towards Easter. May God help you, and may Mary, our Good Mother, be with you. Father Celestino, Pastor Queridas Familias: Hoy comienza en la Iglesia católica el tiempo litúrgico de Cuaresma: auténtica cuarentena del espíritu. El pecado original vulneró la naturaleza del hombre, y, por obra de los hombres pecadores, ha infectado el mundo en el que vivimos. Se impone a todos los hombres la cuarentena del espíritu. Resulta necesario para la salud individual y colectiva, el aislamiento temporal para la revisión de la conducta humana personal y comunitaria. A los cristianos se nos recuerda en este tiempo de Cuaresma la necesidad de revisar nuestras opciones bautismales. El evangelio de hoy nos presenta a Jesús practicando, para ejemplo nuestro, la cuarentena del espíritu en el desierto. Y a continuación oímos de sus labios el anuncio del reino invitando a la conversión: El reino de Dios está cerca, convertíos y creed en la Buena Nueva (Mc 1:15), nos dice Jesús. La Cuaresma, de una parte, nos prepara para la celebración anual del sacrificio redentor de Cristo (la Pascua), que nos mereció el conjunto de bienes aportados por él y que se identifican con el reino: algunos de los cuales (revelación, redención, adopción filial, Iglesia, sacramentos ) poseemos ya, aunque el principal (la vida eterna con la posesión de Dios en el cielo) está aún por venir, mientras vivimos en la tierra. Y, de otra parte, la Cuaresma nos invita a una continua conversión. Necesitamos continuamente de conversión, porque el demonio, el mundo y la carne con sus tentaciones nos apartan de la ruta que lleva a Dios. Jesús quiso ser tentado para animarnos en la lucha y para enseñarnos cómo se vencen las tentaciones: oración, penitencia y meditación de la Palabra de Dios. Con la alegría de sentirnos amados por Dios emprendamos el camino de la Cuaresma hacia Pascua. Que Dios los ayude, y María, nuestra buena Madre, los acompañe. 5 Diocesan Marriage Tribunal Information Evening - The Marriage Tribunal of the Diocese of Venice will host information evening at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Venice, on Monday, March 2. 6 Annual Day of Recollection - The Women of St. Joseph Parish in Bradenton are having their Day of Recollection on Saturday, February 28. The day begins with Mass at 8:00, with registration and breakfast to follow in the Parish Center at 8:45 a.m. The cost is $15 and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Tickets may be purchased in person or by mail through the Parish Office at rd Ave West, Bradenton. Deadline for tickets is Monday, February 19. No tickets available at the door.
