1 Good News about our Schools! A Newsletter from the Superintendent of Schools Fall Part 1 of 2 Welcome Back... As Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of New York, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you back to a new school year and extend my best wishes, and those of His Eminence, to your school community. Through this newsletter, I am happy to share some exciting developments as we prepare to work together to serve the educational and spiritual needs of your child(ren). All of us in the archdiocese, and particularly our principals and teachers, value our partnership with you as we guide your child(ren) through the challenges and opportunities every new school year brings. For this opportunity to know, love, and serve your child, I want to thank you. Together, let's make this a great school year! Sincerely, Timothy J. McNiff, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools Improvement in Student Test Scores When New York State transitioned its curriculum and state test several years ago, all school systems - Catholic, public, private, and charter schools - were challenged. These new national and state standards placed an increased emphasis on literacy, not only in ELA, but in every subject area. The Archdiocesan Department of Education provided extensive professional development to help teachers navigate the new changes. The investment in our teachers paid off: as the charts

2 show, our schools experienced significant test score increases last year. The significant improvements in test scores this year are the result of the dedicated efforts of our principals and teachers, as well as added instructional time in the classroom for Math and ELA. Across the archdiocese, our ongoing investments in technology and data analysis have helped teachers individualize instruction to meet students' needs. On the Spring 2015 New York State test, Catholic schools outperformed New York State and New York City schools in English Language Arts (grades 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8) and Math (grades 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8). From 2014 to 2015, the percentage of students in grades 3 through 8 meeting or exceeding proficiency in ELA rose +4.5% and in Math rose +5.6%.

3 New Resources for Parents Many parents have expressed a frustration with how they can help their children succeed with the new national Common Core standards. Therefore, the archdiocese has updated and added new information, which is accessible online at by clicking on the tab titled "Resources for Parents." There parents will find a menu of options that highlight - by grade and subject matter - useful information to help children in both ELA and Math. Parents will see the particular standard being addressed, the purpose of the standard, and suggested activities to do at home. This particular webbased resource will enable parents to work with their children throughout the entire school year. Parents who would like additional practice materials can go to another website (Google) and type in the standard their child is currently studying. For example, still using grade 3 ELA as an illustration, you can enter "3.OA.1" in Google to find a variety of supplemental resources. The archdiocese will also be implementing a new grading policy this year. Students' grades will now be determined based upon the following percentages: 45 percent will be determined by Summative Assessments (including major tests or projects that occur at the end of a unit); 25 percent will be determined by quizzes; 20 percent by classwork and participation; and the final 10 percent by homework. 5 En la prueba estatal de Nueva York de la primavera de 2015, las escuelas católicas superaron a las escuelas del estado de Nueva York y la ciudad de Nueva York en Artes del Lenguaje (Inglés) (grados 3, 4, 6, 7 y 8) y Matemática (grados 3, 4, 6, 7 y 8). De 2014 a 2015, el porcentaje de alumnos de 3º a 8º que alcanzaron o superaron el nivel de destreza aumentó +4-5% en Artes del lenguaje (Inglés) y +5.6% en Matemática.

6 Nuevos recursos para los padres Muchos padres han expresado una frustración por no encontrar la forma de ayudar a sus hijos a lograr buenos resultados con estos nuevos Estándares Básicos Comunes a nivel nacional. Por lo tanto, la arquidiócesis ha actualizado y agregado nuevos datos e información, a todo lo cual se puede acceder en línea visitando nuestro sitio web y haciendo clic sobre la pestaña "Recursos para los padres". Allí, los padres encontrarán un menú de opciones con información específica -por grado y por materia- para poder ayudar a sus hijos tanto en Artes del Lenguaje (Inglés) como en Matemática. También podrán ver el estándar particular que les interese, el propósito del estándar y sugerencias de actividades que pueden realizar en su casa. Este recurso en la web ayudará a los padres a trabajar con sus hijos durante todo el año escolar. Los padres que deseen obtener materiales de práctica adicionales pueden ingresar a otro sitio web (Google) y escribir el estándar que el niño esté estudiando en ese momento.
