1 MODULE PROPOSAL 1. The title of the module The Carnivalesque in Modern Spanish Theatre I (in English translation). 2. Which term(s) the module is to be taught in (or other teaching pattern) Period 2, starting January Prerequisite and co-requisite modules Drama students need to take this module in conjunction with The Carnivalesque in Modern Spanish Theatre II. Spanish Combined Honours students can only take this module if they are already taking another Spanish course taught in Spanish and they quote from the original Spanish texts in their essays and critical analysis. 7. The programmes of study to which the module contributes As a level H option (stage 3) in all Drama programmes As a content course for final year Spanish Combined Honours students As a wild course for any level H undergraduate student with an interest in XX Century European Drama. As a level H option for students of European Culture and Thought BA As part of ECL Diploma As a level H option in the Cultural Studies BA. 8. The intended learning outcomes and, as appropriate, their relationship to programme learning outcomes Course specific skills: Students will consider evidence, isolate issues and critically evaluate their historical and contemporary significance They will develop skills in consideration and analysis of dramatic material as evidence within a study of the carnivalesque in modern Spanish theatre. They will develop skills in the analysis and evaluation of contextual material within a study of Spanish theatre history.

2 Generic skills: Through class presentations, and guided debates, students will develop communication, problem solving and group working skills. They will improve their confidence in the use of information technology through the use of Web-based resources and the submission of high-quality word-processed essays. They will develop research skills and methodologies They will perfect their self-management capabilities 9. A synopsis of the curriculum This course will examine the use of carnivalesque elements such as distortion, self-effacement, transgression, destruction of hierarchies, religion and superstition in the presentation and criticism of XX Century Spanish social, political and cultural contexts. A brief summary of the use of Carnival elements in Spanish Golden Age and Romantic plays will act as background and set the framework for the study of their use in modern theatre. Topics of study will include: The creation of a Spanish carnivalesque genre: The Esperpento the use of carnivalesque elements to avert censorship during Francoism the carnivalesque during the transition to Democracy and Spanish performance theatre as heir of the Carnival tradition 10. Learning and Teaching Methods, including the nature and number of contact hours and the total study hours which will be expected of students, and how these relate to achievement of the intended learning outcomes Students will be expected to devote up to 10 hours per week to this course. This will be made up by 2 contact hours over 12 weeks (including 1 writing week) plus 7-8 study/preparation hours per week. Seminars are going to be conducted in English and the distribution of time between teacherled and student-led activities will be flexible. Students will use Web resources to reinforce their learning, IT skills and/or performance experience to support their presentations. A combination of individual, pair and group work will develop analytical and writing skills. Development of presentation skills through group tasks. The content element of this course will enhance the understanding of Spanish and European theatre and culture acquired by students in other courses. 11. Assessment methods and how these relate to testing achievement of the intended learning outcomes. Assessment will be 100% Course work and will comprise a range of set tasks (group presentation 20 %, critical analysis 20 % and essay 40%) which will test skills as they are acquired and include the submission of a course portfolio 20% at regular intervals and the end of the course. The use of a portfolio system will allow students to communicate frequently with the course convenor on their performance, monitor their own development and reflect on the set tasks and their personal outcomes.
