Specfcatons and Performance Clams. Ths model s effcency rated, The effcency ratng s vald only at the mnmum stated salt dose, The softener has a demand ntated regeneraton (D,I,R)feature that comples wth specfc performance specfcatons ntended to mnmze the amount of regenerant brne and water used n ts operaton. The softener has a rated salt effcency of not less than 4,000 grans of total hardness exchange per pound of salt (based on sodum chlorde), and shall not delver more salt than ts lsted ratng or be operated at a sustaned maxmum servce flow rate greater than ts lsted ratng, Ths softener has been proven to delver soft water for at least ten contnuous mnutes at the rated servce flow rate. The rated salt effcency s measured by laboratory test descrbed n NSF/ANSI Standard/44. These tests represent the maxmum possble effcency that the system can acheve, Operatonal effcency s the actual effcency after the system has been nstalled, It s typcally less than the effcency, due to ndvdual applcaton factors ncludng water hardness, water usage, and other contamnants that reduce the softener's capacty. 4 About the water softener system. SERVICE When the water softenng system s provdng soft water, t s called "Servce." Durng servce, hard water flows from the house man water ppe nto the water softenng system. Insde the water softenng system resn tank s a bed made up of thousands of tny, plastc resn beads. As hard water passes through the bed, each bead attracts and holds the hard mnerals. Ths s called onexchangng. It s much lke a magnet attractng and holdng metals. Water wthout hard mnerals (soft water) flows from the water softenng system and to the house ppes. After a perod of tme, the resn beads become coated wth hard mnerals and they have to be cleaned. Ths cleanng s called recharge. Recharge s started at 2:00 AM (factory settng) by the water softenng system control, and conssts of fve stages or cycles. These are FILL, BRINING, BRINE RINSE, BACKWASH and FASTRINSE. AUTOMATIC HARD WATER BYPASS DURING RECHARGE Durng recharge the water softener s automatcally put n bypass mode allowng hard water to be avalable to the home. Once the softener s recharged water s drected back through the softener to be condtoned. However, you should avod usng HOT water because the water heater wll fll wth the hard water. FILL Salt dssolved n water s called brne. Brne s needed to clean the hard mnerals from resn beads. To make the brne, water flows nto the salt storage area durng the fll stage. BRINING Durng brnng, brne travels from the salt storage area nto the resn tank. Brne s the cleanng agent needed to remove hard mnerals from the resn beads. The hard mnerals and brne are dscharged to the dran. The nozzle and ventur create a sucton to move the brne, mantanng a very slow rate to get the best resn cleanng wth the least salt. BACKWASH Durng backwash, water travels up through the resn tank at a fast flow rate, flushng accumulated ron, drt and sedments from the resn bed and to the dran. FAST RINSE Backwash s followed by a fast flow of water down through the resn tank. The fast flow flushes brne from the bottom of the tank, and packs the resn bed. After fast rnse, the water softenng system returns to soft water servce. BRINE RINSE After a pre-measured amount of brne s used, the brne valve closes. Water contnues to flow n the same path as durng brnng, except for the dscontnued brne flow. Hard mnerals and brne flush from the resn tank to the dran.

About the water softener system. NORMAL OPERATION, CONTROL DISPLAYS Durng normal operaton, the present tme of day and AM or PM and DAYS TO EMPTYshow n the control dsplay area. The system wll automatcally recharge at the preset recharge tme as needed. FEATURE: OPTIONAL RECHARGE CONTROLS Sometmes, a manually started recharge may be desred or needed. Two examples: You have used more water than usual (house guests, extra washng, etc.) and you may run out of soft water before the next recharge. The system ran out of salt. Use one of the followng features to start a recharge mmedately, or at the next preset recharge start tme. RECHARGE TONIGHT Touch (do not hold) the RECHARGE button. RECHARGE TONIGHT flashes n the control dsplay area. A recharge wll occur at the next preset recharge start tme. If you decde to cancel ths recharge, touch the same button once more. RECHARGE NOW Press and hold the RECHARGE button untl RECHARGE NOW starts to flash n the control dsplay area. The water softenng system begns an mmedate recharge and, when over n about two hours, you wll have a new supply of soft water. Once started, you cannot cancel ths recharge. FEATURE: MEMORY If electrcal power to the water softenng system s nterrupted, the control dsplay s blank, and the blue ndcator lght s off, but the control keeps correct tme for 24 hours. When power s restored, you have to reset the present tme only f the dsplay and blue ndcator lght are flashng. All other settngs are mantaned and never requre resettng unless a change s desred. If the tme s flashng after a long power outage, the water softenng system contnues to work as t should to provde you wth soft water. However, recharge may occur at the wrong tme of day untl you reset the control to the correct tme of day. FEATURE/SERVICE: AUTOMATIC ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSIS The control computer has a self-dagnostc functon for the electrcal system (except nput power and water meter). The computer montors the electronc components and crcuts for correct operaton. If a malfuncton occurs, an error code appears n the control dsplay.

About the water softener system. WATER CONDITION INFORMATION IRON Iron n water can cause stans on clothng and plumbng fxtures. It can negatvely affect the taste of food, drnkng water, and other beverages. Iron n water s measured n parts per mllon (ppm). The total* ppm of ron, and type or types*, s determned by chemcal analyss. Four dfferent types of ron n water are: Ferrous (clear water)ron Ferrc (red water)ron Bacteral and organcally bound ron Collodal and norgancally bound ron (ferrous or ferrc) Ferrous (clear water)ron s soluble and dssolves n water. Ths water softener wll reduce moderate amounts of ths type of ron (see specfcatons).**ferrous (clear water)ron s usually detected by takng a sample of water n a clear bottle or glass. Immedately after takng, the sample s clear. As the water sample stands, t gradually clouds and turns slghtly yellow or brown as ar oxdzes the ron. Ths usually occurs n 5 to 30 mnutes. When usng the softener to reduce Ferrous (clear water) ron, add 5 grans to the hardness settng fore very ppm of Ferrous (clear water)ron. See "Set Water Hardness Number" secton. Ferrc (red water), and bacteral and organcally bound rons are nsoluble. Ths water softener wll not remove ferrc or bacteral ron. Ths ron s vsble mmedately when drawn from a faucet because t has oxdzed before reachng the home. It appears as small cloudy yellow, orange, or reddsh suspended partcles. After the water stands for a perod of tme,the partcles settle to the bottom of the contaner. Generally these rons are removed from water by fltraton. Chlornaton s also recommended for bacteral ron. Collodal and norgancally bound ron s of ferrc or ferrous form that wll not flter or exchange out of water. Ths water softener wll not remove collodal ron. In some nstances, treatment may mprove collodal ron water. Collodal ron water usually has a yellow appearance when drawn. After standng for several hours, the color perssts and the ron does not settle, but remans suspended n the water. SEDIMENT Sedment s fne, foregn materal partcles suspended n water. Ths water softener wll not remove sedment. Ths materal s most often clay or slt. Extreme amounts of sedment may gve the water a cloudy appearance. A sedment flter nstalled upstream of the water softener normally corrects ths stuaton. * Water may contan one or more of the four types of ron and any combnaton of these. Total ron s the sum of the contents. ** Capacty to reduce clear water ron s substantated by WOA test data. CHLORINE Softener resns may degrade n the presence of chlorne above 2 ppm. If you have chlorne n excess of ths amount, you may experence reduced lfe of the resn. In these condtons, you may wsh to consder purchasng a GE pont-ofentry household fltraton system wth a chlorne reducng flter.

Before you start. BEFORE YOU START The water softener requres a mnmum water flow of 3 gallons per mnute at the nlet. Maxmum allowable nlet water pressure s 25 ps. If daytme pressure s over 80 ps, nghttme pressure may exceed the maxmum. Use a pressure reducng valve f necessary (Addng o pressure reducng valve may reduce the flow). If your home s equpped wth a back flow preventer, on expanson tank must be nstalled n accordance wth local codes and lows. The water softener uses o drect plug-n external power supply (ncluded). Be sure to use the ncluded power supply and plug t nto o nomnal 20V, 60 cycle household outlet that s n o dry locaton only, grounded and properly protected by an over current devce such as o crcut breaker or fuse. Do not use ths system to treat water that s mcrobologcully unsafe or of unknown qualty wthout adequate dsnfecton upstream or downstream of the system. TOOLS AND Plers Screwdrver Teflon tape MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION Razor knfe Two adjustable wrenches Addtonal tools may be requred f modfcaton to home plumbng s necessary. 22 Care and cleanng. ADJUSTING YOUR WATER HARDNESS The blend adjustng knob (Fgure 6) gves the ablty to fnely adjust hardness of the treated water leavng the water softener. If slghtly harder water s desred than s normally delvered by the water softener, the blend adjustng knob can dvert a small stream of hard water and blend t wth the soft water enterng the home. The amount of water dverted s controlled by turnng a blend adjustng knob on the end cap of the valve stem. NOTE:To get full performance from your water softener leave blendng valve n the factory closed poston. To make adjustments to water hardness:. Hold bypass handle to keep the valve stem from rotatng (see fgure 6). Loosen hex nut on blend adjustment knob by turnng the hex nut counterclockwse. 2. TO INCREASE HARDNESS: Wth the bypass n the servce poston (see fgure 6) hold the handle to keep the valve stem from rotatng and turn the blend adjustng knob counterclockwse up to 2 turns from the closed poston. It s recommended that adjustments be made n quarter turn ncrements over several weeks untl the desred hardness s acheved. NOTE: Once an adjustment s made to the blend valve knob the change n water hardness at the homes faucets or shower heads may take several days to be notced. Ths delay s due to the large amounts of already condtoned water n the ppes and water heater that must be exchanged before a change n hardness can be notced. Have the water tested to determne the actual water hardness. 3. TO DECREASE HARDNESS: Wth the bypass n the servce poston (see fgure 6) hold the handle to keep the valve stem from rotatng and turn the blend adjustng knob clockwse. When the knob wll not turn anymore, hard water s no longer beng blended nto the soft water. /4. Once the desred hardness s acheved tghten the hex nut (see fgure 6) clockwse untl t comes n contact wth the bypass stem. NOTE: To meet the water softener performance specfcatons and reducton of barum and radum clams the adjustable hardness must be kept n the "OFF" poston. The off poston s acheved when the blend adjustng knob s fully rotated clockwse untl t stops. 23 Care and cleanng. CHECKING THE SALT STORAGE LEVEL end REFILL Brne (salt dssolved n water)s needed for each and every recharge. The water for makng brne s metered nto the gat storage area by the water softenng system valve and control. However, you must keep the tank suppled wth salt. ADDING SALT Lft the salt hole cover and check the salt storage level frequently. If the water softener uses all the salt before you refll t, you wll experence hard water. Untl you have establshed a refllng routne, check the salt every two or three weeks. Always add f less than /4 full. Be sure the brnewell cover s on. NOTE: f usng potassum chlorde (KCI),do not fll above level 4 on the brnewell decal. NOTE: In humd areas, t s best to keep the salt storage level lower, and to refll more often to avod salt "brdgng". Recommended Salt: Nugget, pellet or coarse solar salts wth less than % mpurtes. Salt Not Recommended: Rock salt, hgh n mpurtes, block, grandulated table, ce meltng, ce cream makng salts, etc. _CAUTION: Water softenng salt wth ron removng addtves: Some suts mey hove on oddtve to help the woter softenng system hendle ron n the water supply. Although ths addtve may help to keep the woter softenng system resn cleon, t may olso release corrosve fumes thet weoken end shorten the lfe of some water softenng system parts. CLEANING IRON OUT OF THE WATER SOFTENI NG SYSTEM Your water softenng system takes hardness mnerals (calcum and magnesum) out of the water. Also, t can control some (see the Specfcaton Gudelnes secton) "clear water" ron. Wth clear water ron, water from a faucet s clear when frst put nto a glass. After 5 to 30 mnutes, the water begns to cloud or turn rust colored. A water softenng system wll not remove any ron that makes the water cloudy or rusty as t comes from the faucet (called red water ron). To take red water ron out of water, or over the maxmum of clear water ron, an ron flter or other equpment s needed. If your water supply has clear water ron, perodc resn bed cleanng s needed. GE recommends usng Super Iron Out _' brand resn bed cleaner to thoroughly clean your resn bed f your ron content s hgh. Clean the bed at least every sx months, or more often f ron appears n the soft water between cleanngs. IMPORTANT:It s mportant to mx the resn bed cleaner wth water (followng the manufacturer's nstructons), pour t nto the brnewell (see Fgure 9) and recharge the softener mmedately. Do not pour the resn bed cleaner n wth the salt, as t wll not be as effectve n cleanng the resn, and can cause damage to the softener f t s left n the brne tank for an extended perod due to the corrosve gases that are formed. 23

Routne Mantenance. CLEANING THE NOZZLE AND VENTURI ASSEMBLY A clean nozzle and ventur s needed for the water softenng system to work properly. Ths small unt makes the sucton to move brne from the salt storage area to the resn tank durng recharge. If t becomes plugged wth sand, drt, etc., the water softenng system wlt not work and you wll get hard water. To get to the nozzleand ventur, remove the water softenng system top cover. Be sure the water softenng system s n servce cycle (no water pressure at nozzleand ventur). Then, whle holdng the nozzleand ventur housng wth one hand, remove the cap. Lft out the screen support and screen, then the nozzle and ventur. Wash and rnse the parts n warm water untl clean. If needed, use a small brush to remove ron or drt. Also check and clean the gasket. NOTE:Some models have a small flow plug located n the nozzle and ventur, and/or a small cone shaped screen n the housng. Be sure to check and clean these parts, f your model s so equpped. Carefully replace all parts n the correct order. Lghtly lubrcate the o-rng seal wth clean slcone grease or petroleum jelly and place n poston. Install and tghten the cap, by hand only. Do not overtghten the cap. BREAKINGA SALTBRIDGE Sometmes, a hard crust or salt brdge forms n the salt storage area. It s usually caused by hgh humdty or the wrong knd of salt. When the salt brdges, an empty space forms between the water and salt. Then salt wll not dssolve n the water to make brne. If the brne tank s full of salt, t s hard to tell f you have a salt brdge. Salt s loose on top, but the brdge s under t.the followng s the best way to check for a salt brdge. Salt should be loose all the way to the bottom of the tank. Take a broom handle or lke tool, and carefully push t down nto the salt, workng t up and down. If the tool strkes a hard object (besure t's not the bottom or sdes of the tank), t's most lkely a salt brdge. Carefully break the brdge wth the tool. Do not pound on the walls of the tank. To help dssolve the salt brdge pour one gallon of warm water (not hot) nto the tank. If the wrong knd of salt made the brdge, take t out. Then fll the tank wth nugget or pellet salt only. In humd areas, t s best to fll wth less salt, more often to prevent a salt brdge from formng. 24 Screen _ *Flow plug "--_ Nozzle and _.
