1 Texto: Anda! Curso intermedio, 2ª ed., de Heining-Boynton, LeLoup y Cowell, y acceso a MySpanishLab para esta edición del texto Código de esta clase en MySpanishLab CRSKL3C Días y hora: martes y jueves, de las 2:00 a las 3:15 de la tarde Sala de clase: A121 Oficina: A110D Número de teléfono: Correo electrónico: Maria.Onofre-Madrid@Angelo.Edu Horas de consulta: lunes, miércoles y viernes de las 10:00 a las10:50 de la mañana. martes y jueves de las 11:00 a la 1:50 de la tarde; a otra hora, por cita previa COURSE DESCRIPTION: Advanced Spanish Grammar for Composition, Spanish 3302, is a course designed to help third-year students better understand some of the more difficult grammatical concepts as well as increase the accuracy with which students apply them in their written expression. In order to more closely approximate educated native speech students will learn to correctly utilize idiomatic expressions, words with more than one Spanish equivalent, and Spanish words with more than one meaning in English. The focus is on grammar as related to composition. Prerequisite: successful completion of Spanish LEARNING OUTCOMES: to continue to effectively communicate in Spanish with a high rate of accuracy using the present and past tenses in the indicative mood, the present and imperfect subjunctive, the imperative, and the perfect tenses to also master the progressive tenses, the future and conditional tenses, the perfect tenses in the subjunctive mood, and impersonal, passive, reciprocal, and unplanned occurrence constructions to effectively review ser and estar, as well as por and para to incorporate native expressions into everyday speech and expand mastery of Spanish lexicon in order to augment communicative skills to perform at the advanced level, as defined by the Spanish TOPT standards, which state: The advanced speaker is able to satisfy the requirements of everyday situations and routine school and work requirements. He or she can handle with confidence, but not with facility, complicated tasks and 1
2 social situations, such as elaborating, complaining, and apologizing. The advanced speaker can narrate and describe with some details, linking sentences together smoothly. He or she can communicate facts and talk casually about topics of current public and personal interest, using general vocabulary. Shortcomings can often be smoothed over by communicative strategies, such as filling pauses, stalling, and using different rates of speech. Circumlocution that arises from vocabulary or syntactic limitations very often is quite successful, although some groping for words may be evident. The Advanced-level speaker can be understood without difficulty by most native speakers of the language. Idea Form Objectives: Essential (E): 1. Gaining factual knowledge (terminology, classifications, methods, trends) (Spanish vocabulary, linguistic terminology, verb classifications) 8. Developing skill in expressing oneself orally or in writing (Advanced spoken and written communication in the Spanish language) Important (I): 2. Learning fundamental principles, generalizations, or theories 4. Developing specific skills, competencies, and points of view needed by professionals in the field most closely related to this course (Skills and competencies needed as, e.g., Spanish teacher, translator, or in international business) Method of Assessing Learning Outcomes: Learning outcomes will be assessed via 3 exams, 4 essays, 1 oral exam, quizzes and online assignments in MySpanishLab. Course grade computation: 3 Exams* % Oral Exam** % 4 Essays*** % Quizzes****... 10% MySpanishLab assignments***** % Total.. 100% Each student must complete the work included in the pages indicated before coming to class on the specified day. There will be some unannounced quizzes; therefore, make sure you are prepared at the beginning of each class period. 2
3 * The exams will cover 2 chapters each. Exam 3 is the final exam and will cover chapters 11 and 12. Since chapter 12 features vocabulary and grammatical concepts from the entire course, the exam is somewhat comprehensive. The exams will assess student progress in the following areas: aural comprehension, reading comprehension, mastery of target lexical items (vocabulary) and grammatical concepts. You will need to have at least 2 dark blue or black ink pens to take exams. **The oral exam will be conducted on a one-on-one basis. Schedule times will be posted in Blackboard. 9 MAKE UP AND LATE WORK: COURSE POLICIES There will be no make-up tests, exams, quizzes or work! Work without a name is not graded! Late work will not be accepted. You must use dark blue or black ink for all work turned in. Absolutely no pencil may be used. MAKEUP EXAMS: Students who must miss an exam are NOT eligible automatically to take a make-up exam, and will be granted that privilege only if a valid explanation is documented. If you have a valid reason for missing an exam when it is scheduled, you may make it up. If possible, you should notify me BEFORE the exam. If not, you must notify me within 24 hours of the scheduled exam. Make up exams must be arranged by appointment with your instructor, and must be taken within 3 days of the absence. DISABILITY SERVICES: The Student Life Office is the designated campus department charged with the responsibility of reviewing and authorizing requests for reasonable accommodations based on a disability, and it is the student's responsibility to initiate such a request by contacting the Student Life Office, Room 112 University Center, at (325) or (325) (TDD/FAX) or by at student.life@angelo.edu to begin the process. The Student Life Office will establish the particular documentation requirements necessary for the various types of disabilities. "Persons with disabilities which may warrant academic accommodations must contact the Office of Student Life and Student Services, Room 112 University Center, in order to request such accommodations prior to any accommodations being implemented. You are encouraged to make this request early in the semester so that appropriate arrangements can be made." HONOR CODE: "Angelo State University expects its students to maintain complete honesty and integrity in their academic pursuits. Students are responsible for understanding the Academic Honor Code, which is contained in both print and web versions of the Angelo State Student Handbook." ANY STUDENT WHO PRACTICES ACADEMIC DISHONESTY IN THIS CLASS WILL BE DISMISSED FROM CLASS, AND HE/SHE WILL RECEIVE AN F FOR THE COURSE. 9
10 RELIGIOUS HOLY DAY (OP10.19) A student who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence. A student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence. ATTENDANCE: Any student who is absent more than 3 times loses the possibility of receiving an A in the course. Three (3) points will be deducted from your final course grade for every absence beyond the second one. Each missed portion of a class (late arrival, leaving early, exiting and re-entering the classroom, etc.) will result in 1 ½ points deducted from your final course grade. A student who is absent for nine (9) days or more will automatically receive an F for the course. Plan to be on time; the door will be locked and you will not be allowed to disrupt the class after class has started. There are some valid reasons for a student s absence from class. According to the Angelo State Student Handbook, the valid reasons include illness, family emergency or participation in an authorized university activity. If you have one of these valid reasons, it is your responsibility to inform me in advance, in writing, via (for a university activity), or within 24 hours of the absence, via or voice mail (for illness or family emergency), so that I may determine if you will be excused or allowed to make-up any missed work. You must turn in written documentation to justify all excused or make-up assignments. COMMUNICATION DEVICES: All pagers, cell phones, or other electronic communication devices must be off and out of sight upon entering the classroom; otherwise, they will be confiscated. Use of any of these devices in the classroom will result in dismissal from class. If the device sounds/rings or is in sight, the student will: 1) be asked to leave, 2) be counted absent, and 3) receive an F for any work due or done in class that day. ABSOLUTELY NO TEXTING MAY BE DONE DURING CLASS; IF YOU ARE CAUGHT TEXTING, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE, YOU WILL BE COUNTED ABSENT, AND YOU WILL RECEIVE AN F FOR THE DAY AND ANY WORK DONE OR DUE THAT DAY. BIENVENIDOS! Y MANOS A LA OBRA! This syllabus is subject to change; any changes will be in BLACKBOARD. 10
