1 From Mrs. Drake s Desk This month, I d like to talk about dual language. The newest research on dual language emphasizes the need to use a child s entire language. That means combining what they know in English and Spanish. As an adult bilingual I rely on this every day because there are many words I don t know in Spanish. In the past this was frowned upon and considered a weakness. Now it is seen as a strength that actually makes your language stronger. At Gary we are learning more about this research and the skills of what is known as translanguaging or making cross linguistic connections. As we learn we will share...for now make sure you honor your child s conversation no matter what language they use.even if it s a complete mix of both...or even all three. Este mes, me gustaría hablar de lenguaje dual. La investigacio n ma s reciente sobre el lenguaje dual enfatize en la necesidad de utilizar todo el lenguaje de un nin o. Eso significa combinar lo que saben en ingle s y espan ol. Como un adulto bilingue, confío en esto todos los días porque hay muchas palabras que no se en espan ol. 2 From the Bi-Literacy Coaches / De las maestras de Lecto- Escritura Do you play a sport? An instrument? How did you improve your skills? I bet you PRAC- TICED!! As the bi-literacy coaches we want to remind you that the way to get better at reading in TWO languages is to PRACTICE!!!! By now your child has brought home a contract about home reading!! This is a great way to practice as a family. For every 15 minutes they read, they get one step. Do you have some nights that you are extra busy? Think about how your child can read in the car on the way to ball practice or perhaps they can read the bedtime story to their little brother or sister. Whatever you do, make reading FUN!!! We are excited to see how much our students read this year!!! Tal como toma tiempo de práctica con su deporte o instrumento de música para mejorarse, es igual con la lectura. 3 WHEATON PARTNERSHIP LEARNING SPANISH TOGETHER Wheaton Academy Spanish students are practicing reading with Gary students this year. Not only is reading being practiced but relationships are being built, role models are being provided and kids are working together. They will be visiting every month! 4 From the Main Office If you are bringing your child a lunch from home, lunches must be received in the main office NO later than 11:15am. Students will not be allowed to miss class because their from home did not arrive by 11:15am. From the Assistant Principal As hard as we worked on safety in school last month, I would like everyone to work on safety at home. I would like it if our students and guardians have thoughtful conversations about how they are going to be safe at school and home. I also want families to talk about how to keep healthy. This means dressing appropriately for the upcoming cold and snow. Finally we have a giant pile of clothes and water bottles in our lost and found. If you know you have lost something in the last few months, please pick it up. 5 From the Health Office PLEASE KEEP YOUR CHILDREN HOME IF THEY HAVE A FEVER OVER DEGREES (need to be fever free for 24 hours without medication), EXCESSIVE COUGH, VOMITING, OR DIARRHEA Please call your child in absent by 9:00 in the morning. Let us know if they are sick with cough, fever stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhea, or other reason. With changing outside temperatures the school remains warm. Layers of clothing that can be removed inside is recommended. District policy is that students go outside if feels like temperature is greater than 10 degrees. If they are unable to go outside please provide a doctor's note. Classes start promptly at 8:40. Students who are arriving at 8:55-9:00 are missing some of the most important moments of the morning. Students arriving after 8:45 will only be given the Grab and Go option for lunch. Any parent dropping off after 8:45 will need to bring their child into the office to sign in. Please take a few minutes every now and then to review these with your children. Each month we have a CHAMPS target and distribute PAW awards to students who are caught demonstrating the CHAMPS target. Our November CHAMPs goal is to work on Positive Interactions on the Playground. Students have a very difficult time when games get intense. We need to practice good sportsmanship, sharing, and letting it go after recess ends. We will be teaching them to let Rock Paper Scissors Decided. Your child should be able to tell you about behaviors that are bullying, and ones that are mean, but not bullying. Bullying is repeated mean behavior that can hurt bodies, things, or feelings. It is unfair and one-sided. We also discussed the difference between tattling and reporting. Tattling is telling the teacher about something that is unimportant, or a problem that students could solve on their own. Reporting is telling the teacher about something important. An adult is needed to solve it or to keep everyone safe. Todos estudiamos el acoso escolar en octubre. Su hijo/a debería poder informarle sobre los comportamientos que son intimidación y los que son malos, pero no la intimidación. La intimidación es un comportamiento malo y repetido que puede dañar cuerpos, cosas o sentimientos. Es injusto y unilateral. También discutimos la diferencia entre tattling e informes. Tattling le está diciendo al maestro/a algo que no es importante o un problema que los estudiantes podrían resolver por sí mismos. Informar es decirle al maestro/a sobre algo importante. Se necesita un adulto para resolverlo o para mantener a todos a salvo. 7

8 From 1st Grade / Del Primer Grado This month we will be finishing the unit of people working to provide goods and services in our community. We will start the unit about the sun, moon, and the Earth. In our writing block we will be working on wild animals in danger of extinction. In Math we are in Module 2: Place Value with addition and subtraction with numbers 1 to 20. Remember that it s very important that your child reads daily. From 2nd Grade / Del Segundo Grado Please remind your child to properly take care of and bring back the books that they take in their blue reading bag.we hope that you are enjoying reading these new books with your child. In science the students learned about matter and its properties and they used their new knowledge to design a boat that floats. From Kindergarten / De Kinder Kindergarten is still working on Zoology the month of November. We have talked about living and nonliving things, wild versus domestic animals, zoo and farm animals and everything in between! We will continue our unit with mammals, birds and other interesting animals! 9 From 5th Grade / Del Quinto Grado In our Language Arts ARC program, we are in the fifth week of our Literary Lab and students are learning about author s purpose and how to write narrative essays. In Social Studies we just finished up our video projects on Government Organizations; students worked in teams and served up visual essays on the key aspects of our American governmental history and components of the Constitution. In Math we are starting Module 2, where we learn how to multiply and divide multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm and mental models along with estimation. We have finished our Digital Citizenship lessons, as well as our first round of safety lessons. 10 From the Art Room / De la clase de arte Please send an old shirt to school with your student in a bag to wear on messy art days! It can live inside their backpack or in a teacher-designated spot within their home classroom. Because 1st-5th students have choice in the art room, they will be responsible for protecting their clothing and for choosing appropriate supplies depending on their project. Students will not be allowed to use certain supplies if they are not wearing their messy/art shirts. (Kindergarten teachers will be given advance notice if there is a particularly messy material we are using/lesson we are working on!) We will be discussing this in 1st-5th grade classes in the coming weeks! Por favor-- envíe una camisa vieja/sin importancia a la escuela con su estudiante en una bolsa para usar en los días del arte! 11 From 3rd Grade / Del Tercer Grado Third grade began the year with Egypt and a mummy. At the beginning of our reading program we read the book Mummies in the Morning which is part of the Magic Treehouse book series. We use this text to learn details, facts and academic and technical vocabulary. In math the students can already show how to multiply by 2,3 and 4 with different strategies and have started to memorize the multiplication table for 2,3 and 4. We have spent a lot of time discussing our behavior and our emotions at the beginning of the year so that we are successful the rest of the school year. El tercer grado empezó este año con Egipto y una momia. Al comienzo del programa de lectura leemos el libro Momias al amanecer que es parte de la serie de la casa del árbol libros. Usamos el texto para aprender de detalles, hechos, y vocabulario académico y técnico. K-1 are studying authors & illustrators, 2nd grade are being detectives and solving the mystery of what makes a book fiction or nonfiction. Some 3rd graders are learning about Graphic Novel authors and creating their own graphic novels and other 3rd graders are learning about entrepreneurs and planning out their own business or product! 4th & 5th grade are learning about the author s purpose as we explore current Bluestem nominated books! Coming up for 3rd-5th grade: Persistence Unit. We are participating in a program called You Can Do the Cube! The company lends schools Rubik s Cubes to use for curriculum instruction. Our goal is to Experiment, Fail, Learn, & Repeat! Meetings start at 5:30 in the Innovation Center. Las juntas empiezan a las 5:30 en el centro de Innovacion. 14 From the Music Room / De la clase de musica Kinder and 1st grades will be learning about sound, creating our own instruments from recycled items and learning about the instrument families. 2nd and 3rd will be focused on learning to identify, create and play musical notation. 4th and 5th will be beginning our recorder unit. Remember 1,3,5 and Chorus will be performing at our program on December 11th! From the GATE Room / De la clase de GATE GATE math students finished their unit on ratios and unit rates and are now studying operations and fractions. Students found many real life applications of math concepts as they explored the relationships between percentages, fractions, and ratios. GATE reading students are working on individual power goals as well as literature circle activities in groups in both English and Spanish.
