Toth at the Southwest Dental Group Jaw Pain An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from TMJ dysfunction. TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint, it is a sliding ball and socket joint. It is the joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal fossa of the skull, it allows us to open and close our mouth. It is the most used joint in our body, because it functions when we chew, speak, swallow, yawn, etc. The TMJ requires many muscles to move it and a ligamentous capsule to hold it together. Often associated with stress TM Disorder causes many symptoms including head, jaw, neck, face, shoulder and even back pain. Its causes include uneven bite producing adverse pressure on the joint, dislocated discs, jaw clenching and/ or grinding, and even arthritis. TMD, puts great stress on gums and liga- ments, the supporting structures of our teeth, and can make us more susceptible to common oral health issues, including: Gingivitis or periodontal disease Receding gums Sensitive teeth and gums Chipped or broken teeth As you can see, this condition can compromise our appearance and overall heath and cause you pain. 9 Autumn 2013 LISTA Program Prepares Youth for Success by Aaron Barndollar Thanks to a grant awarded in March by Partnership For Youth, a Detroit -based youth development agency, the Center of Music & Performing Arts Southwest (COMPÁS) was able to offer an extraordinary summer program for the youth of Southwest Detroit. The LISTA (Life Skills Through Arts) Program encouraged students to enhance critical reading, writing, and speech skills through the lyrical and musical elements of hip hop. Normally, a well-drafted Power of Attorney will accomplish this task. However, a Power of Attorney cannot be executed if the individual making the grant of authority is incapacitated or incompetent. In those instances, a Guardianship and/or Conservatorship is required. Generally it can be said that a Guardian makes decisions about the person, such as medical or housing decisions, and a Conservator makes decisions about the property or finances of the person. A Guardian and/or Conservator is appointed by a probate court Judge after a petition is filed in the probate court. A petition may be filed by any person interested in the well-being of the adult. After the petition is filed, a hearing is scheduled and the petitioner goes before the Judge and explains the need for the Guardian/Conservator. It is often helpful if a letter from a doctor or social worker is presented to the Judge. If appointed Guardian/Conservator, annual reports and accountings are to be filed with the court. Failure to do so in a timely fashion could render the petitioner personally liable. Therefore, it is always best to seek the advice of an attorney when attempting to administer these matters. The LISTA Program took advantage of this wave, and turned interest in the genre into a positive creative outlet for the often-overlooked year old members of the community. Participants engaged in an intense 40+ hours of instruction at COMPÁS, complete with visits by guest artists and field trips to music and cultural venues. The program culminated with a 4th of July weekend trip to a northern Michigan day camp where students engaged in activities that challenged them to face obstacles through self-confidence, teamwork, and perseverance. The finale of the program was a multidisciplinary performance at the renowned 5e Gallery in Midtown, an epicenter for the hip hop community in metro Detroit. Students showcased original poetry, dance routines, and visual arts projects. For many of the 30 program participants, it was their first time performing or exhibiting their work.
