Please submit, calendar events, pictures and/or articles about student activities to Kathie Banwarth at kbanwarth@bigvalleyschool.org. The next Newsletter is scheduled for August/September I suppose it is a little cliché to say that I can t believe how fast the year has traveled by, but I really am a little amazed that it is April already! Spring time is a very busy time of year for all and the school system is just no different. We are actively engaged in preparing for the upcoming Smarter Balanced Assessments. This program is still very new as it relates to the new state standards. We ll keep you posted on updates as we receive them. We have several exciting events on the horizon. The prom is scheduled and the 8th grade and Senior trips are almost finalized. Graduation preparations are also well on their way. Baseball and Track seasons have begun and we would like to acknowledge new baseball coach Spencer Leighton, welcome to the team! Welcome also new board members Barbara Donahue and Deborah Peck; thank you so much for your willingness to lead the way. Our accreditation visit is scheduled for the end of April and we have a few teacher openings for next year, please spread the word on our behalf. It is reported that there will not be enough teachers to fill all of the anticipated openings across the region in the next 3 5 years. If you have any interest in pursuing a new career, this is the time to begin. We are preparing for a major summer renovation project at the elementary school which will also impact the high school and surrounding buildings in that they will be used to store the materials that need to be moved. These improvements will bring our facility to modern day standards. I would like to thank you for all of the support you continue to provide our programs. As always, please let me know if you have any questions. Jessica Bowman Superintendent/Principal Page 1

Jessica Bowman Superintendente/Directora Un Mensaje de la Directora Abril / Mayo / Junio 2015 Spring is here and the lawns at Big Valley School are turning green. Soon they will change to yellow with dandelion sprouts which are normal for this time of year. Our lawns have been evenly irrigated lately with a few late winter showers and early morning dew, but that will soon change and the green grass will rely heavily on irrigation from our groundwater source. This year the state has been exceptionally dry with little rain or snow. As a result, groundwater resources are likely to be further stretched in order to meet the needs of everyone in the Big Valley area. In order to do our part in water conservation, the school grounds keeping department intends to reduce landscape irrigation by 50%. This will be accomplished by watering our lawns as normal, but only on alternate days. Furthermore, landscape irrigation may be further reduced during the summer months when school is not in session. Unfortunately, our lawns may not appear as uniform or green during the periods of irrigation reduction. 5 WASC UPDATE In April 2015, Big Valley Junior Senior High School will be visited by other educators to review our school and its programs. The Western Association for Schools and Colleges (WASC) is one of six regional associations that act as the accrediting body for schools in the United States. Accreditation is a process where Big Valley can show that our entire program meets an acceptable level of quality, in accordance with established, research-based WASC criteria. This is an important requirement to prove our graduate s transcripts are valuable. Transcripts that are from unaccredited institutions are basically worthless. The two person visiting committee will be reviewing the last three year s growth at Big Valley High School. The prior visit was in April 2012 when the school had to prepare a comprehensive self-study. There will be a progress report sent to the committee in early March. For the past two years, the staff has been working to update the action plan and acknowledge the progress we have made. The committee will visit with students, parents, staff, board members, and community members in order to understand what we do in Big Valley and verify that our plan for the future is what we need to get better. If you are interested in talking with the committee when they visit, please let the WASC coordinator, Colleen Taylor know. An important component to the WASC process are the Expected School-wide Learning Results (ESLRs). Teachers are working to incorporate the ESLRs into every lesson every day. WASC PARENT / COMMUNITY MEETING Accreditation is vital to a high school, ensuring graduates may go on to college or military service. Big Valley Jr/Sr High School is being reviewed by a visiting committee during April 26 through 28. This vital process is to verify our school s progress in accomplishing the goals set forth by the WASC Commission and the state s Department of Education. The entire K-12 staff has been working intensely to prepare a report and action plan for the future. If you would like to see a copy of the report sent to the committee, contact Colleen Taylor at , extension 4014 or stop by the high school. There will be a Parent and Community Member meeting on Sunday April 26, 2015 in the High school Media Center at 4:00 p.m. This is an opportunity to meet with the committee and share perspectives on the Big Valley culture. Please join us for about an hour to share celebrations and/or concerns about the 7-12 school. Snacks will be provided. BIG VALLEY FFA Congratulations Big Valley FFA!! 7 Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all youth by making targeted misbehavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional. Big Valley Schools and students have adopted these as their guidelines: BE RESPECTFUL BE RESPONSIBLE BE A PROBLEM SOLVER CASL UPDATE. On March 27th through 30th, nineteen BVHS students had the opportunity to attend the CASL State Conference in San Jose, CA along with over 3,000 other student leaders from across the state (Canada and Colorado were also represented). It was a packed weekend of activities and our student leaders had a wonderful time! The California Association of Student Leaders (CASL) knows how to put on an exciting conference. The CASL state conference was three days of inspiration, networking, and learning many new ways to lead our campus in a positive direction. Our students heard from 3 dynamic keynote speakers, attended over 25 workshops, special program rotations, area meetings, intrastates, Meet the Pro s, and participated in a Service Learning Project. Saturday s blacklight dance and Sunday s trip to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk were also part of the conference. I am excited to see the enthusiasm our students have for the future of BVHS and I know they have returned a changed leader, ready to take our ASB to a new level. Page 18 Page 7

11 TDAP VACCINE FOR PRETEENS Why does my child need Tdap vaccine? Babies and little kids get shots called DTaP to protect them from diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough). But as kids get older, the protection from the DTaP shots starts to wear off. This can put your preteen or teen at risk for serious illness. The tetanus-diphtheria-acelluar pertussis (Tdap) vaccine is a booster shot that helps protect your preteen or teen from the same diseases that DTaP shots protect little kids from. Tetanus is caused by a toxin (poison) made by bacteria found in soil. The bacteria enter the body through cuts, scratches, or puncture wounds in the skin. Tetanus can cause spasms which are painful muscle cramps in the jaw muscle (lockjaw) and throughout the body. The spasms can cause breathing problems and paralysis. A preteen or teen with tetanus could spend weeks in the hospital in intensive care. As many as 1 out of 5 people who get tetanus dies. Diphtheria is not as common as tetanus but can be very dangerous. It spreads from person to person through coughing or sneezing. It causes a thick coating on the back of the nose or throat that can make it hard to breathe or swallow. It can also cause paralysis and heart failure. About 1 out of 10 people who get diphtheria will die from it. Pertussis (whooping cough) spreads very easily through coughing and sneezing. It can cause a bad cough that makes someone gasp for air after coughing fits. This cough can last for many weeks, which can make preteens and teens miss school and other activities. Whooping cough can be deadly for babies who are too young to have protection from their own vaccines. Often babies get whooping cough from their older brothers or sisters, like preteens or teens, or other people in the family. When should my child be vaccinated? All preteens should get one Tdap shot when they are 11 or 12 years old. If your teen is 13 years old up through 18 years old and hasn t gotten the shot yet, talk to their doctor about getting it for them right away. What else should I know about the vaccine? The Tdap shot has been studied very carefully and is safe. It is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. The Tdap shot can cause mild side effects, like redness and soreness in the arm where the shot was given, headache, fever, or tiredness. Some preteens and teens might faint after getting the Tdap vaccine or any other shot. To help avoid fainting, preteens and teens should sit or lie down when they get a shot and then for about 15 minutes after getting the shot. Serious side effects from reactions to the Tdap shot are rare. How can I get help paying for these vaccines? The Vaccines for Children (VFC) program provides vaccines for children ages 18 years and younger, who are not insured, Medicaid-eligible, American Indian or Alaska Native. You can find out more about the VFC program by going online to and typing VFC in the search box. Where can I learn more? Your child s doctor or nurse can give you more information about the Tdap vaccine and the other vaccines your child may need. There is also information on CDC s Vaccines for Preteens and Teens website at vaccines/teens. Page 14 Page 11 Encuesta para los Padres sobre el Clima Escolar, Big Valley Jr. Sr. High Su escuela necesita que usted llene esta encuesta en línea para ayudar a mejorar la cultura y el clima en la escuela.
