En una ciudad tan dinámica, abundan las conmemoraciones de la puesta en marcha de proyectos que, con el tiempo, han ido creciendo y contribuyendo a dar forma al envidiable destino turístico que tenemos hoy. There is always something to celebrate in Valencia. This dynamic city hosts an abundance of acts commemorating the implementation of projects that, over time, have grown and helped to shape the enviable tourist destination that we have today. En 2011 hay que hablar de la Albufera, ese singular entorno natural y social, que tan bien retrató Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, nuestro más insigne escritor, en su novela Cañas y Barro. La Albufera cumple años por partida doble. Hace 100 años que el Ayuntamiento de Valencia posee su titularidad, y hace 25 años que fue declarada Parque Natural. La Albufera es, según cuentan los cronistas, otro de los legados romanos que posee la Valencia milenaria. Un estanque de comienzos del Pleistoceno modificado para la cría de pescados, que, dos mil años más tarde, pasaría a ser uno de los parques naturales más grandes de Europa en una gran población. También es un elemento más de la Valencia Verde. Otros son las dunas del Saler, la Devesa, El Jardín del Turia, la franja de flora y fauna que atraviesa la ciudad, con el Parque de Cabecera y el Bioparc en un extremo, y con el Oceanográfico al otro; el Jardín de Viveros, el Jardín Botánico o los Jardines de Monforte. Y todos dan entidad a una estrategia de destino que fomenta e impulsa el turismo sostenible para ser referente europeo en la materia. In 2011, we have to mention L Albufera, that unique natural and social environment which was so convincingly portrayed by our most emblematic writer, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, in his novel Cañas y Barro. L Albufera is celebrating a double anniversary. The City Council has held ownership for the last 100 years, and the area was declared a Natural Park 25 years ago. L Albufera is, according to the chroniclers, part of the thousand-year old city s Roman legacy. Dating from the early Pleistocene and modified for fish farming, after two thousand years L Albufera became one of the largest natural parks in Europe located near to a large city. It is also another element of Green Valencia. Others include the dunes of El Saler, La Devesa, the Turia Gardens the band of flora and fauna that runs through the city, with the Cabecera Park and Bioparc at one end and the Oceanographic at the other -, the Viveros Gardens and the Monforte Gardens. Para celebrarlo, el Ayuntamiento de Valencia ha previsto exposiciones fotográficas y de pintura, visitas teatralizadas o ciclos de cine en la Mostra del Cinema Jove. Además, desde el Servicio Ambiental del Ayuntamiento de Valencia se ha creado un proyecto llamado Seducción Ambiental desde el que se organizan visitas guiadas o desde donde se ha puesto en marcha un servicio de descargas de audio guías gratuitos en la web de albuferadevalencia.com para después alquilar los MP3 en cinco puntos instalados en el lago. La Albufera es el espejo del sol, las estrellas y la luna L Albufera is the mirror of the sun, stars and moon Se trata sin lugar a dudas del Parque Natural más grande de Europa situado junto a una gran población. Dentro de las hectáreas de superficie del parque se enmarcan las hectáreas del lago que son la casa y lugar de anidación de especies de aves como el pato colorado, la cuchara o la garza real, así como de peces como el samaruc, la anguila o la llisa. Surcar sus apacibles aguas en barcas de vela latina y sumergirse en el hábitat de las especies permite apreciar la riqueza vegetal y animal, sus colores y sonidos. Mientras los ánades sobrevuelan el lago, los peces lo recorren a nado y en sus límites alcanzan los verdes arrozales y los floridos naranjos. Un día en las entrañas de este bucólico lugar ha de verse colmado con el plato originario de la zona, la paella valenciana, que puede ir acompañado de otros muy simbólicos y sabrosos como el all i pebre. This year sees Valencia s environmental jewel celebrate its 100th anniversary as a public space following its acquisition by the City of Valencia, and the 25th anniversary of its classification as a Natural Park. To celebrate these anniversaries, the City Council has scheduled photographic and painting exhibitions, theatrical tours and, as part of the Jove Cinema Festival, film projections. Moreover, the City Council s Environmental Services have created a project called Environmental Seduction, which includes guided tours and the launching of a free audio-guide download service via the albuferadevalencia.com website. These guides can then be listened to using the MP3 devices that can be obtained from any of the five rental points located around the lake. This is undoubtedly the largest Natural Park in Europe located near to a major city. Within the Park s 21,000 hectares we find the 3,000 acre lake itself, which is the home and nesting site for birds such as teals, the northern shoveler and the heron, as well as for fish such as the Valencia toothcarp, the eel and the golden grey mullet. Sailing on its peaceful waters in a lateen sailing boat and immersing oneself in the habitat of the different species allows the visitor to appreciate the rich plant and animal life, its colours and its sounds. While ducks, swans and geese fly over the lake, fish swim through the lake s waters, bordered by green rice fields and flowering orange trees. A day spent in the heart of this bucolic location simply must include the sampling of the area s local dish, the Valencian paella, which may be accompanied by other highly symbolic and tasty dishes, such as all i pebre.

4 157 TESOROS SECRETOS de la Valencia antigua y medieval Ancient and medieval Valencia s secret treasures Volver a las calles por las que circularon los antepasados romanos, disfrutar de una exposición de arte junto a un fragmento de muralla árabe, ser testigo de un juicio del Tribunal de las Aguas en plena plaza de la Virgen o conocer en directo el único Santo Grial del mundo reconocido por el Vaticano, son sólo algunos de los tesoros de las entrañas de Valencia. Durante siglos esta urbe mediterránea ha mantenido en secreto algunas de las maravillas europeas de la antigüedad y la época Medieval, hoy millones de turistas comienzan a descubrirlos y a ensalzarlos. En el casco histórico, bajo la plaza acristalada de la Almoina aguarda el foro Romano que data del año 138 antes de Cristo y por donde podemos caminar sobre las dos carreteras que llevaban a Roma, la Vía Apia y la Vía Augusta. También encontramos en él restos visigodos, piezas de cerámica o el trazado del alcázar de la época islámica. con la irrigación del campo, una institución catalogada como Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Por su parte, la Muralla Árabe forma parte de las más bellas exposiciones de arte en algunos de los museos y galerías más emblemáticos de la ciudad como es el caso del IVAM, el MUVIM o La Galería del Tossal. De época posterior es la Lonja de la Seda, construida para albergar y organizar el comercio de la seda y el comercio por mar, es un regio edificio gótico lleno de símbolos declarado Patrimonio Histórico de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. The Arab Wall, in turn, forms part of the most beautiful art exhibitions in some of the city s most iconic museums and galleries, as in the case of the IVAM, the MUVIM o Tossal Gallery. Dating from a later period is the Silk Exchange Market, built to house and organize the silk and maritime trades. This regal building hosts a multitude of Gothic symbols and was declared an Historical World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Y es que Valencia se convierte por unos días en centro del glamour mundial formando parte del exclusivo circuito de ciudades sede del evento hípico más reputado y elegante del mundo, el Global Champions Tour. Palau de les Arts w v XI Valencia Fashion Week Después de la emotiva Ofrenda Floral a la Virgen de los Desamparados en las Fallas, el segundo domingo de mayo es la segunda ocasión del año en que los valencianos rinden homenaje a la patrona de la ciudad con una colorida y fervorosa fiesta que reúne a decenas de miles de ciudadanos en torno a la figura de la Geperudeta. Los momentos más álgidos se viven durante el Traslado y la Procesión de la Virgen en torno a la Plaza de la Virgen, cuando los feligreses se agolpan para acariciar su manto. El origen de esta fiesta se remonta al siglo XV, perpetuándose hasta hoy. Otro color tiene el Festival del Mediterrani, que entre el 29 de mayo y el 26 de junio celebra desde el Palau de les Arts con valencianos y visitantes la fiesta de la ópera y la música con espectaculares representaciones y performances en sus salas interiores y en los exteriores. Este año nos sorprenderán las óperas de Tosca y Fidelio y los conciertos dirigidos por Zubin Mehta y Georges Prêtre. Bajo el cielo valenciano y rodeados de jardines en Viveros, las cintas del Festival de Cine Cinema Jove mostrarán las mejores creaciones de jóvenes directores, así como ciclos de los clásicos de siempre. Entre el 17 y el 24 de junio lo mejor del cine joven nos espera en Valencia. En la época estival es tiempo de festivales: el del Mediterrani, Cinema Jove, la Feria de Julio o San Juan que florecen en las calles Y vinculado al gusto de los valencianos por celebrarlo todo en la calle, el 23 de junio la noche de San Juan llena las playas de magia con las hogueras alrededor de las cuales decenas de miles de jóvenes celebran la llegada del solsticio de verano con música, juegos y cenas. A media noche y a la luz de la luna, todos ponen sus pies a remojo y piden sus deseos. Ya en pleno verano, la Feria de Julio llena el calendario de conciertos, actuaciones en las calles, corridas de toros, fuegos artificiales, actos falleros e incluso paradas como la Batalla de las Flores, que cubre de un colorido manto naranja el Paseo de la Alameda y lo inunda de su perfume floral. En el Oceanogràfic los más pequeños de la casa podrán dormir con los tiburones, los más mayores pueden ser entrenadores de belugas y morsas por un día o hacer yoga rodeados de especies marinas. Junto a él, la pasarela de la XI Valencia Fashion Week se desplegará en el interior del Ágora para mostrar las creaciones de los diseñadores valencianos más cool entre el 7 y el 9 de septiembre. In El Oceanogràfic, children can sleep among the sharks, whilst adults can become whale and sea lion trainers for a day or practice yoga surrounded by sea animals. Between 7 and 9 September, the interior of the adjacent Ágora building hosts the 11th Valencia Fashion Week, which will serve as the setting for the latest creations of Valencia s coolest designers. Del 11 al 17 de julio campuseros ocuparán sus puestos de navegación que contarán con una red local de un giga de potencia. Nunca antes la reunión de la red de redes había contado con tan buena tecnología. Otra de las novedades son las estrellas informáticas y de la comunicación que este año acompañarán a los participantes para compartir sus conocimientos. Así, desde Kevin Mitnick, exhacker; David Calkins, presidente de la Robotics Society of America y colaborador de Discovery Channel; Stuart Clark, doctor en Astrofísica, miembro de la Agencia Espacial Europea y reputado periodista; Jon Hall, director ejecutivo de Linux, y muchos más, desfilarán por el evento valenciano. Campus Party regalará a los participantes las tiendas de campaña, en el tiempo libre acercará a los campuseros a refrescarse en una piscina, a disfrutar del fútbol o baloncesto o a tumbarse para disfrutar de un masaje gratuito. The event will be held, as usual, in the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. From 11 to 17 July, 6500 participants will surf the web via a 1Gb local network. This is the first time that this world wide web meeting has been equipped with such good technology. Other innovations include the IT and communications stars that are to share their knowledge with this year s participants. JAZZ NOTES AND POP RHYTHMS Percussion, wind, strings... everything is ready for the Jazz Festival, to be held in the Gardens of El Palau de la Música and which will feature the most contemporary and classic sounds to be found in the current jazz scene.
