3 Page 3 Reflections, Announcements, News, Thoughts The Pastor s RANT More than Just the Unofficial Kickoff to Summer Memorial Day, Lest We Forget As the BBQs get fired up and the beaches get crowded, I hope we do not fail to remember what this day commemorates those who gave their lives to defend our nation. As the saying goes freedom is not free. We salute those who have honorably served and sacrificed. We honor their families and loved ones. May our fallen heroes rest in the peace of eternal life. Solemnity of the Body & Blood of Christ We often take for granted the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. This is the central sacrament of our faith and yet, we often fail to really appreciate this, greatest of gifts from God the Father? These next two weekends, we will see several of our young people receive the Eucharist for the first time. The eagerness, excitement, and enthusiasm of these young children to receive Jesus should remind us of how we should feel each and every time we are privileged to receive Jesus. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR CHILDREN RECEIVING EUCHA- RIST FOR THE FIRST TIME! The children will receive their First Holy Communion at the following masses Sunday May 29 1:30pm Spanish Mass Sunday June 5 10:30am English Mass Congratulations (soon to be) Deacon Federico and family! Diaconate Ordination Friday June 3 rd at 4:00 pm Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Rancho Penasquitos With great joy, we will celebrate the ordination of Federico Drachenberg to the Diaconate. He and his wife Claudia have prepared faithfully over these past years for this special church ministry here at St. Joseph Cathedral. We look forward to their ministry, which will be at Sacred Heart Church in Coronado. Felicidades Federico y Claudia! FYI The parish office will be closed in remembrance of Memorial Day. In addition, there will only be ONE MASS on Memorial Day at 9:00am (No and 12:07 pm masses). We wish you a blessed Memorial Day. Don t Forget Our Dads! Father s Day Novena begins June 19th! Cards Available in the Vestibule We remember our Moms on Mother s Day. We remember our Dads on Father s Day. Both are important days to recognize the love and sacrifices of both Mom and Dad. Yet, in the world in which we live, fathers sometimes get ignored for the role they play in creating healthy, holy families. We need to pray for our Dads! You are invited to remember a special father, stepfather, grandfather, uncle, brother, any man who has accepted the vocation to fatherhood. We will also remember our Dads who have died and need our prayers. We will offer our special novena for the intentions of all our Dads. These nine days of prayer begin on Father s Day. If you would like to remember a Dad, living or deceased, in this novena, please get a card and envelope from the vestibule and return the envelope to the parish as soon as possible. 4 Page 4 News & Notes Restoration Fund This Weekend May 28th & 29th will be our monthly second collection for S. Joseph Cathedral Restoration Fund. In order for the Parish Office to keep record of your donation, we encourage you to use the GREEN envelopes in the pews. RCIA: An Invitation for Everyone to Community in Christ. We are beginning a new year round RCIA process. If you are interested you are invited to join with us at 10am in the parish office. At Saint Joseph Cathedral parish community we believe that everyone has an invitation to join the RCIA process. The RCIA s invitation is for those individuals who have not been baptized and wish to enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic Faith Community. The invitation is for those from other Christian Faith communities who wish to become members of the Roman Catholic Church. Catholics who have not completed the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist will find the invitation is for them to complete those sacraments. Catholics who have not been active in their faith and wish to return to an active sacramental relationship with the faith community will find the RCIA a place to have that journey. Mass at 9:00am Parish Office will be Closed. Rock n Roll Marathon Sunday, June 5th Please be aware that several streets downtown will be closed on Sunday, June 5th due to the Rock & Roll Marathon. Race related road closures will impede normal access to the Church Parking Lot between 5:30am to 2:30pm You must approach from Beech St. to enter the parking Lot. Ash St. will be closed during this time. You may Google RunRocknRoll.com/Community for more info with alternate directions. However, you still have to come to mass!!! Have You Ever Wanted to Volunteer Catholic Charities Food Resource Center has plenty of volunteer opportunities for you! Each month the downtown San Diego Center provides food to over 1900 households. Volunteers are needed in a variety of positions and there are immediate openings. For more information please call Joy Davis at (619) x 102 Divorced, widowed, and separated persons can register now for a healing Beginning Experience Weekend retreat July 22-24, The weekend focuses on healing and moving beyond grief in a supportive and caring environment with others that are going through and have gone through the same experiences. The retreat will be held at the beautiful and serene Prince of Peace Abbey, in Oceanside, CA. If you know someone experiencing or stuck in the pain of grief, Beginning Experience can help. Les pedimos que use los sobres color verde que se encuentran en las bancas para que la Oficia Parroquial tenga anotado su donación. Maratón Rock y Roll ~ Domingo 5 de Junio Por favor tome nota que varias calles en el centro de San Diego van a estar cerradas el próximo domingo por el Maratón Rock y Roll incluyendo la calle Ash hacia el estacionamiento. Todos los carros deben de entra por la calle Beech. Las calles van a estar cerradas entre 5:30am a 2:30pm. Aun tienen que venir a Misa!!!! Gracias! Más Allá de la Parroquia Ayuda para la Ciudadanía Caridades Católicas ofrece asesoría gratuita en español en la Parroquia de Nuestra Sra. de Guadalupe, Barrio Logan para los inmigrantes que les interesa el proceso de la Ciudadanía. La organización ofrece la información el primer domingo de cada mes de 8 de la mañana al mediodía. Los que cumplen los requisitos recibirán apoyo para completar la solicitud de ciudadanía. Jesús dijo dos veces: Hagan esto en memoria mía (1 Corintios 11:24, 25). Esta es la buena nueva de la solemnidad de hoy. Como las cinco mil almas hambrientas, somos alimentados por nuestro Señor. Este alimento no satisface sólo por un corto período de tiempo, hasta la próxima comida. Es un alimento que dura y nos cambia. Es un alimento para compartir de la misma forma que lo hizo Melquisedec cuando presentó pan y vino a Abram a su regreso. Como hijos del reino de Dios, tenemos la dicha de poder recibir y compartir el regalo de Dios. Y lo hacemos de la manera más apropiada a nuestra circunstancia en la vida como padres, hijos, esposos, esposas o religiosos. Lecturas de Hoy Primera lectura Melquisedec, el rey de Salem y sacerdote del Dios Altísimo, sacó pan y vino y bendijo a Abram (Génesis 14:18-20). Salmo Tú eres sacerdote para siempre (Salmo 110 [109]). Segunda lectura Pablo da su descripción de la institución de la Eucaristía (1 Corintios 11:23-26). 6 Page 6 Jubilee Year of Mercy Resources are available at Faith Formation Faith Formation is a vital element of every Catholic parish. The role of parish faith formation is to provide organized and systematic approach to the instruction and practice of the faith for everyone in the parish community. The goal of this formation is to give each member an understanding of their faith so they can evangelize and witness to the faith in the greater secular community. The programs offered at Saint Joseph s Cathedral parish reflect the diversity of an urban Southern California parish. In addition to the weekly catechetical program special events and speakers are presented throughout the parish s pastoral year. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) RCIA an Invitation for everyone to Community in Christ. At St. Joseph Cathedral s parish community we believe that everyone has an invitation to join the RCIA process. The RCIA s invitation is for those individuals who have not been baptized and wish to enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic Faith Community. Sunday Children s Faith Formation - Classes meet every Sunday in the Auditorium. English Classes 9:00-10:30am Spanish Classes 11:40am - 1:30pm For more information or to follow up on the Sunday Children s Faith Formation, please contact Alicia Gutierrez at or alicia@sdcathedral.org Youth Confirmation - The Sacrament of Confirmation is a two year faith journey. During those two years, the youth and their families are expected to participate in Confirmation Preparation Ministry. Classes are held every other Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00pm in the Auditorium. Please contact Sr. Ruth Marie Barreda SrRuth@sdcathedral.org. Baptism Parents who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal Coordinator, Sonia Escamilla at the Parish Office at or info@sdcathedal.org. Parents are encouraged to make contact with us at least two (2) months in advance of a desired baptismal date. This early contact enables parents to be scheduled for the necessary sacramental formation session before the child s baptism and allows time for sponsors to obtain letters from their parish pastor. If you are a registered parishioner at St. Joseph Cathedral and need a letter of good standing in order to be a godparent for a baptism at another parish, please call the Office. Marriage Couples who are interested in celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage at the Cathedral are encouraged to visit the parish website to review our guidelines for weddings. The next step is to call the Rectory at (619) and ask to speak to the Wedding Coordinator, Lynn Martinez. Couples are expected to contact us at least 9 months in advance of the date in which they hope to celebrate their wedding.

7 Page 7 Formación en la Fe El propósito de la formación de fe es hacer lo que Cristo dijo a sus apóstoles. Esto es proclamar el evangelio y llevar al pueblo a una comunión con Dios. Todos los Católicos tienen la responsabilidad y el derecho de participar en la misión catequética de la Iglesia por virtud de su Bautizo; esto es un proceso de vida, aprender y ensenar a ortos la fe. La Vida de la Iglesia es catequética y es el responder a necesidades de los que son catequizados. RICA Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos La comunidad parroquiana de Catedral de San José extiende una invitación a todos al proceso de RICA. La invitación es para Adultos que nunca han sido bautizados y quisieran establecer una relación con Jesucristo en la Comunidad Cristiana Católica Romana. De igual manera la invitación es para Adultos de otras comunidades Cristianas que quisieran ser miembro de la Iglesia Católica Romana. Católicos que aun no completan el Sacramento de Confirmación y Primera Comunión se les invita a que reciban los Sacramentos. A Católicos que no han sido activos en su fe y quisieran regresar a una fe activa sacramental encontraran que RICA los guiara de nuevo a su Fe Católica Romana. La evangelización y el Catequesis son bases fundamentales en el programa de RICA en Catedral de San José. Durante estos dos anos, es obligatorio que los adolescentes y sus familias participen en el Ministerio en Preparación para la Confirmación. Las clases se llevan a cabo cada domingo de 11:40am a 1:30pm en el Auditorio. Por favor comuníquese con Alicia Gutiérrez al (619) o Alicia@sdcathedral.org. Bautizos Los Padres que deseen bautizar a su hijo en Catedral, deberían de comunicarse con la Coordinadora Bautismal Sonia Escamilla al teléfono de la Parroquia (619) o al correo electrónico info@sdcathedral.org. Se les invita a los padres que se comuniquen dos (2) meses antes de la fecha bautismal que desean. Este anticipo permite programar la sesión necesario de la formación sacramental para los padres antes del bautismo del niño/niña y también permite que los padrinos obtengan cartas del pastor de su parroquia. Si usted es feligrés registrado en Catedral de San José y necesita una carta de recomendación para poder ser padrino/madrina de bautismo en otra parroquia, por favor llame a la oficina. Matrimonios A las parejas interesadas en celebrar el Sacramento de Matrimonio en la Catedral, se les invita a visitar la pagina web de la parroquia para revisar los requisitos. El próximo paso es llamar a la Oficina Parroquial al (619) y pedir hablar con la Coordinadora de Bodas, Lynn Martínez que le va a poder asesorar sobre las preparación matrimonial y de programar su ceremonia de boda en Catedral. Es obligatorio que las parejas se comuniquen con nosotros por los menos con 9 meses de anticipo de la fecha que desean celebrar su boda.
