2 The Bash on the Bridge The party was going strong and high. NYC Parks joined Comptroller Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Councilmembers Ydanis Rodríguez, Mark Levine and Vanessa L. Gibson, Assemblywoman Latoya Joyner, State Senator Adriano Espaillat and community members joined to kick off the first-ever High Bridge Festival this past Sat, July 25th. In collaboration with more than a dozen community groups, the festival celebrated the revival of the iconic High Bridge since its closure in After its grand reopening on June 9th, the High Bridge has again become one of the city s biggest attractions. The High Bridge reopened on June 9th. The High Bridge Festival included a public art installation, walking tours of the bridge, a Bridge Making Workshop presented by the Bronx Children s Museum, and live entertainment, including a performance by Jose Peña Suazo y La Banda Gorda. Opened in 1848, the High Bridge is the oldest standing bridge in New York City and was a part of the city s first water supply system. After being closed for more than four decades, Parks and Department of Design and Construction restored and improved the 1,450-foot-long, 123-foot high bridge. As the only interborough bridge designed exclusively for pedestrians and bicyclists, the restoration of the High Bridge provides communities of both Manhattan and the Bronx with access to more than 125 acres of green space with baseball fields, basketball courts, bike trails, a skatepark, playgrounds and lawns. The High Bridge restores a unique connection between two boroughs, providing communities with access to resources in both counties. Bronx residents are now able to walk directly to the Highbridge Pool and Recreation Center, while Manhattan residents will gain access to the Harlem River waterfront. The improved design will also allow pedestrians to enjoy new features including a hand-restored brick walkway, restored historic railing, new safety fence, barrier-free access, and new architectural lighting. After years of devotion, dedication and patience, Bronx and Manhattan community On a whirl. members can once again enjoy the historical beauty that is the High Bridge, said Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP. The symbolism here is that there is no longer a divide between the two boroughs, now there is open accessibility to all of the resources in this amazing space. Free Action-Packed Celebration on National Night Out Celebrate National Night Out in Co-Op City with an evening of fun, community spirit, and a special performance by the Timeless Torches, the New York Liberty s senior dance team. Fidelis Care and Riverbay Corporation invite people of all ages to join them for National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4 from 6 to 11 p.m. at 140 Bechley Place, Section 1 Greenway, in Co-Op City. The Timeless Torches will entertain the crowd with their dancing skills from 7 to 8 p.m. The National Night Out celebration also features live music, a bounce house and face painting for kids, refreshments, and more. Community organizations will offer information about services available in the Bronx. Fidelis Care representatives will also be available to answer questions about affordable health insurance options for children and adults. Residents gathered on Sun., Jul. 26 th along the Grand Concourse to march, cheer, mingle and dance at the 26 th Annual Dominican Day Parade. The parade, known as La Gran Parada Dominicana del Bronx, drew elected officials, community, business and cultural leaders, who marched along extravagant floats and groups of enthusiastic dancers. The avenue s every street was adorned with the flag s colors of red, white and blue, and the traditional rhythms of merengue and bachata echoed throughout. 5 First citywide transgender forum The forum was held at Hostos Community College. T he City s first-ever forum to call attention to the needs of transgender New Yorkers was held on July 23 at Hostos Community College. Organized by City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, the City Council s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Caucus, Councilman Ritchie Torres and various community-based organizations, the event drew over 100 attendees. The struggle for transgender equality should be at the forefront of our collective agenda, said Mark-Viverito. It is our duty as elected officials to engage the transgender community and that the solutions to these issues come from the people who directly experience them. I stand with our transgender brothers and sisters until we achieve full trans equality and justice. The forum was designed to highlight issues impacting transgender New York City residents and the barriers to services and resources they face, as well as discrimination pertaining to housing, employment, education, healthcare and policing. Torres indicated that the Council will increase its efforts to engage transgender New Yorkers. This forum is only the beginning of what will be an ongoing dialogue on how we can better support the transgender community, Torres commented. At the event, Councilmembers and their staffs partnered with transgender community leaders and LGBT organizations to identify next steps for creating transgender-focused policies and initiatives. Prolonged exposure to the heat and direct sunlight can be very harmful, and in some cases, fatal. Heat can also aggravate or worsen certain health conditions such as heart and lung disease, and respiratory illnesses such as asthma or allergies. Know the warning signs of heat-related illness, and call 911 if you are in distress. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about staying safe during extreme heat. Stay safe: The elderly, very young, or anyone with pre-existing medical conditions may be vulnerable to the extreme heat. Check on neighbors and offer assistance to those in need. Stay out of the sun if possible. If you must be outside find shade to cool off, or an air-conditioned building. Wear sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun while outdoors. Be sure to apply about two heaping tablespoons of sunscreen to exposed areas of the body before going outside. Avoid strenuous activity, especially during peak hours of the day when the sun is strongest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stay hydrated by drinking water even if you are not thirsty. Avoid beverages containing alcohol and/or caffeine. Wear lightweight, thin fabrics, lightcolored clothing, and hats to protect yourself from the sun and to help keep cool. New York City has opened cooling centers around the five boroughs, including at senior centers, NYCHA facilities, and parks. Call 311 to find a center near you. Know the warning signs: Feeling faint or weak Hot, dry skin or clammy skin Difficulty breathing Confusion, disorientation, dizziness Nausea and vomiting HHC is here to make sure you stay healthy and feeling good. I loved meeting our children and families as they excitedly waited with anticipation to board the bus to meet their host families who have games, special foods, and plans awaiting our children, said Shama. Our children have the chance to learn and experience new things not normally part of their traditional summer vacations. 9 When closed doors are good for business Story and photos by Gregg McQueen As summertime temperatures rise, local store owners tend to crank up the air conditioning. But retailers that leave their doors open while running the AC are not only harming the environment, they re essentially throwing money down the drain. That s the message from the city s Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), which has announced a major outreach effort to encourage businesses to shut the front door when the air conditioning is on. On Wed., July 22, more than 200 DCA volunteers visited 45 commercial corridors throughout the five boroughs to educate businesses about the harmful environmental and financial impact of keeping doors open while running air conditioning. The DCA s Shut the Front Door! campaign also includes a social media push with the hashtag #BeCoolSaveFuel, together with multilingual flyers, bus stop ads and stickers for businesses. It s not only good for the environment, it s also good for businesses, because they can save nearly $1,000 dollars on their summer electric bill by keeping their doors shut, explained DCA Commissioner Julie Menin. Every single business in New York City should know about this, and know what s at stake for the environment. As part of the campaign, the DCA is working with the City Council to strengthen the existing Local Law 38, which currently requires chain stores with five or more locations in New York City or retail businesses 4,000 square feet or larger to close the door when the air conditioning is on. As stores under 4,000 square feet are exempt from the law, many air-conditioned small businesses leave their doors open in the summertime, without fear of getting fined. We believe that every single store in New York City should be keeping their doors shut, said Menin. That s why we re working to remove the exemptions. The DCA has also stepped up its enforcement efforts. Since June, the agency has inspected nearly 900 businesses citywide, and handed out an increased number of fines. Under the current law, penalties for noncompliance are relatively modest $200 for a second violation, and $400 for subsequent offenses. For a first offense, businesses are issued a warning, but no monetary fine. Menin said that harsher penalties are part of the amendments currently being proposed to the City Council. It s not only good for the environment, it s also good for businesses, explained DCA Commissioner Julie Menin. By strengthening the law, it gives us the enforcement capability to make sure that this law has the teeth that it really needs, said Menin. But even without the fines, retailers who prop the door open are being hit in the pocket. The Long Island Power Authority has estimated that when city businesses leave their front door open with air conditioning on, those stores waste as much as 20 to 25 percent of their electricity. That costs some retailers up to $1000 in the summer season, according to Con Edison. Retailers who keep their doors open while blasting their air conditioners are wasting energy, boosting their electricity costs, risking the possibility of blackouts or brownouts on peak energy-demand days, and unnecessarily contributing to climate change, said Eric A. Goldstein, New York City Environment Director at the Natural Resources Defense Council. The DCA s Shut the Front Door! efforts are in concert with Mayor Bill de Blasio s environmental agenda, as the mayor has committed to reducing the city s carbon emissions 80 percent by the year Commercial buildings are responsible for 20 percent of New York City s greenhouse gas emissions each year, largely generated by heating and cooling systems. It s a very sad day, especially to see the St. Ann statue being removed from the church, said Albert Rodríguez, a parish member for the past decade. The Shrine Church of St. Ann was founded in In November 2014, the Archdiocese of New York announced St. Ann s would be merged with St. Brendan s as part of a consolidation plan. Though there are a reported 2.8 million Catholics in New York, the Archdiocese says attendance has fallen to 12 percent, with only 346,000 parishioners regularly attending Sunday Mass, making it difficult for some of the parishes to cover costs. The Archdiocese said it spends $30 to $40 million a year in subsidies to churches that cannot cover their debts. Despite the air of sorrow, many present chose to focus on the future. 12 Sweet spot no more Story and photos by Mónica Barnkow As she rides her bicycle to work, Jane Bedell passes the time by keeping count of the available healthy food choices along the way. We can lead the nation, said Health Assistant Commissioner Jane Bedell. It s a short tally. The exercise is as much a diversion as it is a reminder for the city s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Assistant Commissioner, who finds too few viable options during her travels. Considering that Bedell works in what has been rated the unhealthiest county in the state, and which has some of the highest obesity rates, the finding might seem of little surprise. When healthful food options are scarce or nonexistent, unhealthy habits prevail, explained Bedell. But her route now has a few new spots she can add to the mix. The Union Community Health Center (UCHC) has declared all its sites and offices free of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). The initiative is intended to raise awareness among all members of the UCHC community including its patients on the importance of making small steps to increase wellness and focusing on more healthful choices. It also means that UCHC staff is leading by example. This past July 15th, physicians, administrators and staff signed pledges to eliminate SSBs from the workplace across all of UCHC s sites. They were joined by Senator Gustavo Rivera and Assemblymember Victor Pichardo, who took part in the signing ceremony. We have to make sure our children grow up in a healthier environment, said Pichardo. The journey of 1,000 miles always begins with a single step. It is very important to make the connection between obesity and other outcomes, added Bedell, in reference to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Bedell said the goal was to curb if not altogether eliminate the intake of sugary drinks, as these account for the largest number of what are considered empty calories consumed. These calories don t register in your metabolism, noted Bedell, adding that it was not uncommon to feel hungry even after drinking a large sugary drink. UCHC is the first community health center in New York State to introduce SSB-Free Zones. The SSB Free Zone initiative takes what UCHC doctors are doing a step further with role modeling action, said CEO Douglas York. If we want our patients to be receptive to our recommendations, we must first show them through our own behavior. Comencé a trabajar con él en Jimmy s Bronx Café, dijo Alvarez, refiriéndose al primer restaurante que el empresario abrió en el 1993 en Fordham Road. Era para Jimmy, como era conocido el restaurante de 300 asientos, que las celebridades (Jennifer López, marcada), el presidente (Fidel Castro, marcado) y estrellas de la pelota (Derek Jeter, marcado), iban para sus celebraciones. 15 Mad for marigolds, and more Story and photos by Mónica Barnkow At a recent scavenger hunt, Abelyna G. nabbed third place. The prize was an edible and unusual treat: a string bean. She had to eat it, raw, right on the spot. It was actually very good, she reported. It was the first time the teenager from the Bronx had ever eaten a raw vegetable. But it would not be her last. She and her peers from the New Settlement Apartments Girls Program were taking part in Learning Gardens, a unique program being offered by the City Parks Foundation (CPF). The initiative engages youths to utilize science and math concepts, learn about specific plant needs, and investigate nutrition and food access issues in their local community. Beyond a first crunchy bite, the experience on July 15th offered Abelyna the opportunity to expand her knowledge of gardening and encouraged her to incorporate healthier eating habits. Among the treats were kale, broccoli and mint, all grown in the garden at Grove Hill, located on the corner of 158th Street and Eagle Avenue, in the Morrisania neighborhood. Abelyna joined with her fellow gardeners for a lesson on plants. Guided by a group of high school interns, the students, who are in the fourth through eighth grades, learned about the different parts of plants, and practices such as watering, weeding, and harvesting. The girls took notes and recorded their observations in science journals. Dylan Hammond serves as CPF s Garden Manager and Intern Coordinator, and he directed the activities, which included a Plant Part Relay Game between teams. In addition, the young gardeners took home tea bags, made with herbs they personally hand-picked. The Learning Gardens program helps to integrate gardening with elementary and high school education, using experiential education. (It brings) student-centered learning within the garden classroom, said Hammond. CPF is a nonprofit organization that seeks to build healthier communities in parks throughout the city. Its Learning Gardens program is a collaborative effort, as the event was led by six high school interns who, after a 12-week training session, impart the skills they acquire to the younger children. During the summer, interns work 4 days a week (for a total of 24 hours), and also attend professional development trips. The summer program utilizes our trained garden interns to pass on the knowledge they learned to a younger group of students, explained Hammond. From major campaigns for Wendy s, Toys R Us, and Clairol, to the tremendously popular Aflac duck, Kaplan Thaler s ad agency has played a key role in establishing name recognition for some of the world s largest companies, and with her co-founder, Robin Koval, built one of the fastest growing ad agencies in the country. Here is her latest installment. It wasn t until about 5 years ago that I learned about our local community board. I am not alone. Often, when I speak with fellow residents, some have no idea what the community board is, or know what their roles are. Here are a few useful tips. Community boards are local representative bodies. There are 59 community boards throughout the city, and each one consists of up to 50 unsalaried volunteer members, half of whom are nominated by their district s City Council members. Board members are selected and appointed by the Borough Presidents from among active, involved people of each community and must reside, work, or have some other significant interest in the community. Each community board is led by a District Manager who establishes an office, hires staff, and implements procedures to improve the delivery of City services to the district. While the main responsibility of the board office is to receive complaints from community residents, they also maintain other duties, such as processing permits for block parties and street fairs. Many boards choose to provide additional services and manage special projects that cater to specific community needs, including organizing tenants associations, coordinating neighborhood cleanup programs, and more. Each board has different committees, such as the Parks Committee and the Land Use Get on Board committee, etc. They host monthly general meetings, and specific committee meetings. These meetings are free and open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend. During meetings, different local concerns are addressed, and new projects are presented. The community boards are meant to serve as a neighborhood s first resource and is the place where ideas and proposals that directly impact quality of life and development are freely discussed and debated. The College of New Rochelle (CNR), which has campus sites in Harlem and the Bronx, has been selected to receive the 2015 Innovation Award for Resource Enhancement from the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) for the development of a unique shared services model for technological advancement in collaboration with Marist College. The award honors higher education institutions that incorporate cutting edge solutions to significant institutional challenges applicable to all colleges and universities.
