3 Dear Parishioners, I m pleased to share with you some of the wonderful opportunities during the Year of Mercy here at the Cathedral to deepen your relationship with Jesus during this Lenten season we ve just begun. The first: Mercy Fridays. Many of you are already taking advantage of this beautiful time of prayer and Confession each Friday night from 6PM-8PM. Bishop Olmsted and I have heard many Confessions since the Year of Mercy started, and we have yet to actually finish by 8PM...more like 9PM or 10PM! Our Eucharistic Lord is present on the main altar of the Cathedral on these nights, and many of you are coming regularly to pray. Jesus would love to see the Church full of people praying, particularly, for the spiritual renewal of Ss. Simon & Jude Cathedral parish. Before describing the other spiritual events, allow me to say a bit more about the prayer intention: the spiritual renewal of Ss. Simon & Jude Cathedral parish. I have been praying for this intention since last September. We have also included this intention as part of our prayers of the faithful every Sunday. I hope you ve noticed! There are also prayer warriors praying for this intention far beyond the borders of our parish and diocese including one of the Cathedrals in Haiti where a priest friend of mine serves as rector! A brief comment on the word parish. Most people think of the parish as the Church building and, maybe the Church office and rectory. But a parish is actually a territory ours extends east-to-west from 7 th Avenue to 35 th Avenue; and north-to-south from Northern Avenue to Camelback Road. That means we are responsible for the spiritual welfare of everyone Catholic or not within that boundary. So when we are praying for that intention, we are praying for many more people than just our list of registered parishioners. We re praying for the businessman and the homeless man; the single mother and the drug addict, the healthy and the sick, the Christian and the atheist...and everyone in between. As more and more of you pray deliberately for this intention, the number of miracles, small and large occurring within our boundaries is increasing! Returning, now, to the subject of praying before our Eucharistic Lord, I also want to encourage you all to come and to invite at least one other person to join you for our Eucharistic Congress from Tuesday, February 16 through Friday, February 19. As you ll see from the posters around the campus, we will have some very dynamic speakers; two of four Masses celebrated by bishops; and many opportunities for prayer and Confession. If you want to deepen your relationship with Jesus...be there! Give that time to Jesus and he ll give you...himself! Finally, I m delighted to announce our next Teaching Tuesday series! The topic this time around will be how to recognize God s hand actively at work in your daily life especially the ways that your personal prayer is bearing fruit moment by momen throughout each day. Your love for the Lord will grow as you see him at work in your life, and you will also experience the personal touch of his love in your heart. This four-week series begins on Tuesday, February 23 (the week after the Eucharistic Congress) and concludes on Tuesday, March 15 (the week before Holy Week) and will be beneficial for you whether you ve attended a previous Teaching Tuesday session or not. God Father, Son and Holy Spirit wants to flood your heart with his love and mercy in the coming weeks. He only needs you to show up ready to receive all he has in his heart...for you! 6 2016 CHARITY AND DEVELOPMENT APPEAL The CDA supports community and charitable organizations that assist individuals and families in need or in crisis. As we begin Lent, may we open our hearts to the grace of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Next Wednesday, Feb. 17, is the first SVdP Lenten Soup Supper held in our school cafeteria. It is a wonderful beginning with pots of delicious soup donated by members of the RCIA group, the GUADALAPANAS and the SVdP. Join us this Wed. Feb. 17 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Donations are appreciated. Thank you so much to the students, teachers and staff for the great Catholic School s Food Drive. We also send a huge thank you to the Boy Scouts who distributed about 500 grocery bags in neighborhoods and asked them to be filled with groceries. 8 Estimados Feligreses, Me complace en compartir con ustedes algunas de las maravillosas oportunidades aquí en la Catedral durante el Año de la Misericordia, para profundizar su relación con Jesús durante esta temporada de Cuaresma que acabamos de empezar. La primera: Viernes de Misericordia. Muchos de ustedes ya están tomando ventaja de este hermoso tiempo de oración y Confesión cada viernes por la noche de 6PM-8PM. El Obispo Olmsted y su servidor hemos escuchado muchas Confesiones desde el comienzo del Año de la Misericordia, y de hecho no hemos terminado a las 8PM más bien a las 9PM o 10PM! Nuestro Señor Eucarístico está presente en el altar principal de la Catedral durante estas noches, y muchos de ustedes están viniendo regularmente para orar. A Jesús le gustaría ver la Iglesia llena de gente orando, en particular, por la renovación espiritual de la parroquia de la Catedral de San Simón y Judas. Antes de describir los otros eventos espirituales, permítame hablar un poco más acerca de la intención de oración por la renovación espiritual de la parroquia de la Catedral de San Simón y Judas. He estado orando por esta intención desde el pasado mes de septiembre. También hemos incluido esta intención en nuestras oraciones de los fieles cada domingo. Espero que lo hayan notado! Así que cuando oramos por esta intención, estamos orando por muchas personas más que nuestra lista de feligreses registrados. Estamos orando por el hombre de negocios y el hombre sin hogar; la madre soltera y el adicto a las drogas, los sanos y los enfermos, los Cristianos y los ateos y por todos los demás. Mientras más y más de ustedes oran deliberadamente por esta intención, el número de milagros, pequeños y grandes que suceden dentro de nuestros márgenes aumentan! Volviendo ahora, con el tema de la oración ante el Señor Eucarístico, también quisiera animar a todos ustedes a venir e invitar al menos a una persona para que lo acompañe a nuestro Congreso Eucarístico desde el martes, 16 de febrero hasta el viernes, 19 de febrero. Como usted podrá ver en los anuncios alrededor del campus, tendremos algunos oradores muy dinámicos; dos de cuatro Misas serán celebradas por obispos; y muchas oportunidades para la oración y Confesión. Si usted desea profundizar su relación con Jesús esté allí! Dedíquele ese tiempo a Jesús y él le dará a sí mismo! Por último, me agrada en anunciar nuestra próxima serie de Enseñanza en los Martes! El tema en esta ocasión será como reconocer la mano de Dios obrando activamente en su vida diaria especialmente las maneras en que su oración personal da fruto momento a momento cada día. Su amor hacia el Señor crecerá mientras ve como Él obra en su vida, y también experimentará el toque personal de su amor en su corazón. Esta serie de cuatro semanas comienza el martes, 23 de febrero (la semana después del Congreso Eucarístico) y concluye el martes, 15 de marzo (la semana antes de Semana Santa) y le será de mucho beneficio para usted, si bien, haya o no haya asistido anteriormente a una sesión de Enseñanza en los Martes. Dios Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo quiere llenar su corazón con su amor y misericordia en las próximas semanas.
