2 VERB TO BE. Estar (to Be) is used to express four basic concepts: Location, health, changing mood or condition, personal opinion in terms of taste or appearance. Yo estoy Tu estas El, ella, Ud. esta Nosotros estamos Vosotros estáis Ellos, ellas, Uds. están am we are Location: Estar is used to describe where something or someone is physically located. Yo estoy en la clase. Nosotros estamos en el carro. El restaurante está en la ciudad. Ellas están en el baño. Estas tú en el hospital? am in the class. We are in the car. The restaurant is in the city. They are in the bathroom. Are you in the hospital? Health: Yo estoy bien, gracias. Ella está enferma. Los doctores están enfermos. Como están Uds.? Estamos bien. am fine, thanks. She is sick. The doctors are sick. How are you? We are well. Changing Mood or Condition: La muchacha está contenta. Estoy feliz. Los hombres están cansados. Estamos alegres. Estás enojado? The girl is happy. am happy. The men are tired. We are happy. Are you angry? Pay attention: often the pronouns yo, tu and nosotros are omitted. Personal opinion in terms of taste or appearance: When estar is used with food, the English equivalent is taste or tastes. When estar is used with appearance, the English equivalent is look or looks.
