3 2 Qualifying for Reduced Fares Metro s Reduced Fare Programs enable eligible applicants to obtain special TAP cards for reduced-rate fares and passes. Applications for these cards are available at Metro Customer Centers and online at metro.net. When completed, they can be mailed to Metro s Reduced Fare O;ce, submitted at any Customer Center or mailed to the TAP Service Center as speci>ed on each application. senior 62+/disabled/medicare To obtain a Senior TAP card you must be 62 years or older. Completed applications must be accompanied by a photo and proof of age. To obtain a Disabled TAP card you will need proof of eligibility or a Medicare card. Completed applications must be accompanied by a photo, required documentation and a $2 processing fee. college/vocational To qualify for a College/Vocational TAP card, proof of eligibility is required. Completed applications must be accompanied by a photo, required documentation and a $1 processing fee. Some colleges o=er additional group rates; check with your college business o;ce to >nd out more. student (k-12) To obtain a K-12 Student TAP card, submit a completed application, accompanied by required documentation. Students in grades 9-12 are required to have a valid photo ID or school ID for pass purchase and when riding with a Student TAP card. Complete instructions and requirements are included on each application. For questions, call Riders with qualifying incomes can also receive Rider Relief coupons to use when buying their transit passes; for more information on this program, call or visit metro.net/riderrelief. 6 5 What is TAP? TAP is a fare payment system used by Metro and many other regional transit agencies. TAP is a durable plastic card with an electronic chip inside that you can use again and again. All Metro fares can be loaded on TAP cards (On buses only, single fares also may be paid with cash; see page 3). where to buy > Buy your TAP card from TAP vending machines at all Metro Rail and Metro Orange Line stations, Metro Customer Centers and approximately 400 Metro pass sales outlets. To find a participating location near you, please check taptogo.net. how to load > All fares purchased at TAP vending machines will need to be loaded on TAP cards. Paper tickets are not available. > If you don t have a TAP card, for just $1 you can purchase one along with your fare from a TAP vending machine. > If you already have a TAP card, just follow the prompts to load it with the fare you want. > For ultimate flexibility, simply load stored value on your TAP card. Tap it before boarding and the correct fare will automatically be deducted on any system that takes TAP. > Metro Passes can only be loaded onto a TAP card. The pass is activated the first time you TAP. (For more information on passes, see page 3).

7 6 how to tap > On Metro buses: Simply tap your card on the farebox s TAP target. A sound and message will show the bus operator your card is valid. > On Metro Rail and Metro Orange Line: Locate the station validator and tap your card on the TAP target. > If your trip requires more than one train (i.e changing from the Red Line to the Blue Line), you must tap the validator again at the station where you change trains. > Always have your TAP card handy, as fare enforcement o;cers with handheld validators may ask to verify that you have tapped. how to reload > You can reload your TAP card at any TAP vending machine located at all Metro Rail and Metro Orange Line stations. Just follow the instructions on the machine. > You also can reload your card at Metro Customer Centers (see page 14) and approximately 400 pass sales outlets, including Continental Currency Services, Inc. and select Ralphs markets. To find a location near you, please visit metro.net. how to buy a day pass on a bus > As you board, ask the bus operator for a Day Pass. Insert your money and wait for the operator to push the transaction button. Then tap your card on the farebox s TAP target to load the Day Pass onto your card. Note: TAP cards can be loaded with a Day Pass on board for $7.

8 7 Getting on and o= a Metro bus catching the bus > Arrive at your bus stop >ve to ten minutes early. Wait on the sidewalk by the bus sign, away from the curb. > Check the headsign above the windshield of the bus for the route number and destination. Make sure to check the headsign just before boarding since buses may sometimes change routes. > Signal the operator to stop for you by waving. Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the door opens all the way before boarding. > Allow passengers in wheelchairs or with disabilities to board >rst. > Strollers must be folded to board a bus. leaving the bus > Watch for your destination. If you are not familiar with the area, ask the operator to call out your street. > About one block before your stop, signal the operator to let you o= by pressing the STOP button or pulling the cord located between the windows. > Exit through the rear door. This lets new passengers board and wheelchair passengers exit through the front door. > Finally, check to be sure you have all your belongings with you and don t forget your bike if you used the bike rack!

9 Getting there safely 8 general safety tips > Never run after or next to a moving bus or train. > Don t play near buses, trains or tracks; pushing and shoving can cause accidents. > Watch in both directions for buses and trains. > Hold on to your child when a train or bus approaches. > Wait for the vehicle to stop before approaching. > Wait for exiting passengers to leave, then board. > Watch your step, especially at night or in wet weather. > Take a seat if possible; use handrails/handholds. > O=er reserved seating to senior/disabled riders. > Be ready to exit when you arrive at your stop. > Step away after exiting. bus safety tips > Wait on the sidewalk away from the curb, not in or near the street. > Let riders in wheelchairs or with disabilities board >rst and exit >rst. > When standing, stay behind the yellow line. > Keep all parts of your body inside the bus. > If you drop something when exiting, leave it on the ground until the bus drives away. rail safety tips > Always stand away from the edge of the platform. > Don t skate or ride your bike on platforms, stairs or escalators. > Watch the gap between the platform and train. > Don t lean against train doors; keep hands clear. > Never climb rail vehicles or walk on the tracks. > Look both ways when crossing the tracks.

10 9 Metro welcomes riders with disabilities Metro fully supports the needs of persons with disabilities by ensuring that all bus lines are accessible through bus ramps. Our rail system is ADA-compliant for all passengers. Metro o=ers reduced fares to passengers with disabilities (see page 2). In addition, riders with current Access Services ID cards may ride Metro bus and rail at no charge. Customers with hearing or speech impairments can easily contact Metro using the California Relay Service. Call 711, and then enter the number you need (see page 3). Metro is also the primary funding source for Access Services, the Federally-required ADA paratransit service. This service is offered to individuals whose disabilities prevent them from independently using regular bus or rail service. Access Services picks up people and drives them directly to their destination. Rides need to be scheduled at least one day in advance. 11 10 Always be aware See something? Say something. Your security is Metro s top priority. We take every precaution to keep your trip safe. But the real eyes and ears of the system are YOU. here s how you can help > Be aware: If someone riding near you forgets a personal item, remind him or her to take it along with them. > Be informed: Know the location of emergency phones and memorize Metro Security Alert: SAFE (7233). > Be alert: Report any suspicious behavior, persons in unauthorized areas or unattended packages to Metro or Sheri= s personnel immediately. how to report a security problem > On a bus: Tell the operator immediately. > On a train: Use the intercom located in each car to inform the operator. Intercoms are usually near the doors at each end of the rail car. > In train stations: Use the intercom near TAP vending machines or at the end of the platform in underground stations. Get the App For non-emergency situations, use the LA Transit Watch app to report crimes or suspicious activity. Download the free app at the Apple App Store or Google Play.

12 11 Bikes on Metro Bikes are welcome on Metro and are a great way to complete your trip. bikes on buses > While waiting for the bus, remove all loose items from your bike (i.e bags, lights) to take on board with you. For extra security lock a wheel to the bike frame before the bus arrives. > You are responsible for loading and unloading your bike. Wait until the bus is fully stopped before approaching. Always load your bike from the sidewalk side and never cross in front of the bus to board or exit. > You may not be able to board if your bike obstructs the operators view or takes up too much space on the rack. > While on the bus, sit or stand near the front to watch your bike. > Just before your stop, tell the bus operator that you will be getting your bike from the rack and exit at the front door. > Folding bikes with 20 inch or smaller wheels can be taken on board. Make sure your bike is folded and stored under a rear seat so as not to block aisles and doors. > Motorized bicycles or any bicycles over 55 pounds cannot be accommodated on Metro bus bike racks.

13 12 bikes on rail > Be courteous to other passengers. > Always stand with your bike in the designated open area while on board the train. > Give priority to wheelchair passengers in designated areas. > Always keep doors and aisles clear. > Do not park your bicycle behind operator s cab in lead car. > Always wait for the next train if the train is too crowded. > Bikes must enter and exit stations on the elevator or stairs. Bikes are not allowed on escalators. > Walk your bike in stations and on platforms. > Folding bikes are encouraged and allowed on board. > Electric and fuel powered, 3-wheeled, tandem, recumbent and over 6-foot long bicycled, as well as all mopeds and trailers, are not allowed. bike parking > Metro provides bike parking at most Metro Rail and Orange Line Stations. > Keep your bike safe by locking it to a bike rack.
