2 El tiempo borra Notes for the teacher Goal: Students will learn about the Uruguayan gaucho culture as they read, interact, retell the story. Objectives: Students will learn geographical terms and regional vocabulary. Students will be able to locate and identify the counties of South America. Students will be able to recognize the flag of Uruguay and other South American counties. Students will learn about Uruguayan culture. Students will identify Spanish synonyms. Students will use verbs in the preterit or imperfect to fill in the blank worksheet. Students will recognized vocabulary from the story to complete the passages. Students will use communicative modes to achieve comprehension. Students will summarize the main events of the the story.

3 Notes for the teacher This lesson is designed for Advanced Spanish Students Stage III The lesson is designed for 5 days depending on the progress of the students. World Language Content Standards for California Public Schools: Content, Communication, Functions, Cultures, Structures, and Settings. 3

Activity 2: Flags Students will match the flags to the countries. Activity 3: Culture The students will research traditional attire of the Uruguayan gaucho and compare it with the American cowboy. Student will read the story for homework. Standards:content: A.3.1.h.,B.3.6, C.3.1,C.3.2,

11 (summary) El tiempo borra El tiempo borra by Javier de Vienna is a short story about an Uruguayan gaucho that was incarcerated for 15 years for killing a man. One day as he returns to his ranch, he asks himself if his wife and son still live and if they remember him. He had been married for only a year, his wife was very young and his son was a newborn. He feared that his wife would have remarried and his son had no idea who he was. His fears all came true when he arrived at his ranch, the woman that was his wife had remarried and had several more children. The woman did not recognize him when he arrived, until he asked her if she recognized him. She tried to justify herself, telling him the reasons she remarried, but he did not pay attention to her reasons. He knew from the very beginning that she would marry again but he did not wanted to believe it until he saw it for himself. Indalecio left his ranch that day broken hearted and destroyed emotionally, he had nothing to do there anymore, so he left.

Activity 2 Round Robin Make 20 flashcards, ten questions and 10 answers to the question. Give students half of the class flashcards with questions and the other half with the answer. Students with the question flashcards reads the answer and the students that think they have the answer, will read it and if it s correct they both get points. Activity 3 Summary of the reading. The students will develop a summary board using vocabulary and main points from the story. Standards: B.3.1, B.3.4, B.3.5,D.3.0, D.3.1
