More than 11 million pounds of food are distributed in Ventura County each year. A sea of orange balloons flooded the Ventura County Government Center s Hall of Administration last Tuesday morning 185 balloons, to be exact, each representing a food Harriet H. Samuelsson Foundation awarded grants totaling $415,000 During its Fall 2014 grant cycle, the Harriet H. Samuelsson Foundation has awarded grants totaling $415,000 to 12 nonprofit organizations that are engage in cancer research or that support Ventura County children and adolescents under age 18. The Foundation was created by Harriet H. Samuelsson, an Oxnard philanthropist, upon her death in 2004 at the age of 96. Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley received $40,000 for General Support for Education Programs. Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley received $40,000 for its Academic Enrichment program for At-Risk Youth. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley received $40,000 for its Positivity in Health program. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard & Port Hueneme received $40,000 for its Youth Development program. Cancer Fit, Inc. received $10,000 for its Play Fit Stay Fit Exercise Assistance program. Children s Hospital of Los Angeles received $100,000 to continue its Medulloblastoma research on the P1D1 knockout mouse. Girl Scouts of California s Central Coast received $20,000 for its Be a Friend First program. Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation received $50,000 for its Hairy Cell Leukemia Data Registry project. Museum of Ventura County received $5,000 for its Museum-Based School Learning Program. RAIN Communities, Inc. received $20,000 for its Bright Futures program. Santa Barbara-Ventura Counties Dental Care Foundation received $20,000 for its Family Smiles for Oral Health program. Westminster Free Clinic received $30,000 for its Teen Healthcare Training/Internship program. The Harriet H. Samuelsson Foundation invites qualified organizations that engage in cancer research or that support Ventura County children and adolescents (under age 18), to apply for funding by submitting a Letter of Inquiry at www. samuelssonfoundation.org. The Foundation awards grants twice a year in the Spring and in the Fall. pantry in Ventura County that helps distribute more than 11 million-pounds of food, FOOD Share raises each year. The Ventura County Board of Supervisors recognized September as Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign to mobilize the public to take action to battle hunger. FOOD Share staff, members of its Board of Directors, volunteers, agricultural leaders and the regional food bank s partners from local public and private agencies were in attendance, most of whom were donning the color orange in honor of the hunger-relief efforts. It s not okay that a majority of the 74,500 people seeking FOOD Share s help each and every month are part of families with two full-time working incomes and are still not able to make ends meet, FOOD Share Board of Director Member Monica White addressed to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors. According to a 2013 Map the Meal Gap study by Feeding America, more than 102,000 people in Ventura County about 12.6 percent of the county s total population are food insecure, which reflects a gap of more than 20,000 individuals who are not turning to the regional food bank for support. Summing up the presentation, FOOD Share Board of Director Member Melissa Livingston said, We appreciate your involvement in FOOD Share and its activities addressing hunger awareness, advocacy and education. On behalf of the FOOD Share team, I offer a heartfelt thank you for your collective impact and engagement, because only together can we solve hunger in our community. How to Take Action for Hunger Action Month: Vote for FOOD Share to help Ventura County s regional food bank win a $60,000 funding grant from Walmart s Fight Hunger. Spark Change campaign. Finding simple ways at work and home to help feed the hungry, like hosting a neighborhood canned food drive with your kids, having potlucks and asking guests to bring canned food donations, or pack their lunches then donate the funds it would have cost to dine out to FOOD Share. The GSA, collaborating with the Human Services Agency (HSA) and the Information Technology Services Department, received the 2014 CSAC Challenge Award for digitizing the business reply mail process for HSA, slashing processing time from days to hours. Previously, it took two to three days from the time letters arrived at the GSA mail center to when they were available to eligibility workers within HSA. In addition, workers spent an estimated 16,000 hours annually manually scanning documents instead of providing front-line service. The solution centralized the scanning of 4.2 million images annually at the new GSA Digital Mailroom, thereby leveraging technology to revolutionize the way reply mail is handled and processed. Now, physical mail no longer leaves the GSA facility. Once received, envelopes are rapidly opened in an automated process, with a single technician removing and feeding the contents into a high-speed scanner that transfers the images directly into the digital workflow. Up to 500,000 images are scanned monthly, and the commitment for same-day delivery service is being met. HSA has redirected thousands of hours of staff time previously spent handling documents to, instead, serving the public, at an estimated value of $2 million annually. County CEO Michael Powers noted that This innovative project has resulted in some of the neediest families in Ventura County receiving critical service much sooner, and illustrates what good government looks like when three of our outstanding agencies work together for the benefit of the public. The District Attorney s Real Estate Fraud Prosecution Program was selected by CSAC for a Merit Award. With strong support from the Ventura County Board of Supervisors since its inception in 2005, the REFPP allows real estate fraud victims to file complaints with a single agency, in order to centralize suspectrelated data and facilitate the investigation and prosecution of cases by an experienced and knowledgeable team. The REFPP partners with the Real Estate Fraud Advisory Team, a volunteer organization of real estate professionals who have demonstrated a commitment to preventing and deterring real estate fraud through public and industry educational outreach events. Commenting on the CSAC recognition, District Attorney Totten said, We are grateful for this recognition of our program for its dedication to protecting Ventura County homeowners. Viene de la página A1 En el estudio se descubrió que el 16 por ciento de los hombres encuestados habían probado nue- vas drogas en Tijuana, tras su más reciente deportación, indicó la profesora adjunta del Departamento de Medicina de UCSD, Victoria Ojeda. "En este caso, los usuarios que participaron en el estudio, muchos compartían jeringas y eso es lo que va aumentando el riesgo", indicó la doctora. "El cambio a ser una droga inyectada es lo que incrementa el riesgo para VIH", agregó. Señaló que para los deportados que se ven obligados a vivir en ocasiones en las calles, es muy difícil alejarse de las drogas ya que es mucha la disponibilidad y muy bajo el costo, tomando en cuenta que Tijuana es un corredor habitual para el tráfico de sustancias. La catedrática consideró que otro factor que afecta a los inmigrantes que son repatriados, son las barreras que experimentan para tener acceso a los servicios de salud. Una de ellas es la falta de la credencial para votar, considerado el documento oficial para trámites en México. "Sí hay interés en servicios pero hay varios factores que pueden reducir la posibilidad para que ellos tengan acceso a ellos", comentó y enfatizó que la falta de dicha credencial es el principal obstáculo. Otro factor es la carencia de atención de salud mental, en la que puede influir distintos factores, desde la falta de documentos hasta el cómo fueron tratados por las autoridades de inmigración, policía local o la misma comunidad. "Cuando experimentan trastornos psiquiátricos como depresión y dependiendo de la situación eso puede afectar como se integran a la comunidad", mencionó la catedrática, quien subrayó que la salud mental tiene un gran papel en el aislamiento de los inmigrantes. La investigadora recalcó que para atender este tipo de problemáticas, la colaboración entre autoridades de México y Estados Unidos es crucial. "Siempre la comunicación entre los dos países sobre estas pobla- ciones que sí ocupan medicamento para VIH, porque si no se crea resistencia a las drogas", dijo. Como parte de este esfuerzo, en 2011 la UCSD abrió en conjunto con la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) una clínica binacional de atención médica a inmigrantes, operada por estudiantes de ambas instituciones académicas y situada en la misma zona donde se realizó el estudio. "Es un espacio para explorar la oportunidad y para mejorar el servicio a la población migrante", concluyó. Por su parte, la investigadora Kimberly Brouwer de la División Global de Salud Pública de UCSD coincidió en que se requieren más campañas de salud y prevención de VIH enfocadas únicamente en los deportados. Para ello, exhortó a aprovechar los servicios de reintegración de inmigrantes, como es el caso de albergues temporales, donde podrían recibir información médica. La catedrática, quien ha realizado estudios de salud entre inmigrantes deportados tanto en la frontera sur como en la frontera norte de México indicó que muchos de ellos, cuando regresan tienen afectaciones emocionales. "Hay muchos problemas de salud mental en deportados, hay muchos estigmas con lo que esto representa, algunas veces ven el regreso a su país de origen como un fracaso y muchos de ellos han estado desconectados de sus familias", finalizó. 5 Latinos siguen enfrentando peores condiciones laborales Los hispanos enfrentan las peores condiciones laborales, son los peor pagados y de los que se abusa más. Por Alfonso Fernández Los últimos datos nacionales de empleo siguen mostrando que los hispanos, junto con los afroamericanos, son quienes enfrentan peores condiciones laborales, con bajos salarios y alto desempleo, de acuerdo con un nuevo informe divulgado por AFL-CIO, la principal central sindical del país. El reporte, titulado El Sueño Americano escurridizo: bajos salarios, alto desempleo y un retiro inseguro para los latinos, ha sido publicado con motivo del Día del Trabajo que se celebró el lunes. Pese a que la situación económica ha mejorado paulatinamente tras la crisis financiera de 2008 y el desempleo ha ido reduciéndose, quedan patentes las diferencias en función de la raza y el origen étnico. La tasa de desempleo general en el país cerró julio en el 7.4 %, según datos del Departamento de Trabajo, aunque si se desglosa por minorías el panorama es menos tranquilizador. Los estadounidenses blancos registraron un desempleo del 6.3 %, mientras que entre la población hispana fue del 9.4 % y entre los afroamericanos del 12.5 %, y los cálculos de los economistas proveen que esta tendencia se mantenga por lo que resta del año. Asimismo, en lo que se refiere a los salarios, los latinos aparecen como los trabajadores con sueldos más bajos del país. Página B5 Entre 2007 y 2012, los hispanos vieron incrementarse sus remuneraciones el 2.8%, al pasar de ingresar 576 dólares a la semana a 592 dólares. Sin embargo, la cifra sigue siendo inferior a la de los trabajadores afroamericanos, que pasaron de ganar 664 dólares a 665 dólares en este periodo, y notablemente menor a la de los trabajadores blancos, cuyos ingresos pasaron en estos cinco años de 873 dólares a 879 dólares a la semana. Por otro lado, estas difíciles condiciones, unidas a la precariedad laboral, también provocan que al llegar a la vejez se encuentren en una situación de mayor vulnerabilidad financiera debido a los gastos en salud y a los escasos ahorros de jubilación. El 70.1% de los latinos de 65 años de edad o mayores tienen ingresos inferiores al doble del umbral de la pobreza, que se toma como nivel básico de subsistencia. En comparación, sólo el 43.8 % de los blancos son vulnerables económicamente, de acuerdo con los cálculos del Instituto de Política Económica (EPI, por sus siglas en inglés) Este reporte confirma la des- afortunada realidad que muchos latinos y sus familias tienen que luchar para subsistir con lo mínimo, aseveró Ana Avendaño, directora de inmigración y acción comunitaria y asesora del presidente de la AFL-CIO. Los latinos trabajan duro todos los días para construir esta nación. Organizaciones comunitarias, como La Hermandad y el Proyecto Mixteco también se unieron a la marcha. Escuelas de Zumba, de artes marciales no faltaron entre los participantes. Por último, y en un acierto de los organizadores, desfilaron las asociaciones de charros de la región y por eso,no deja de ser digno de admirarse la destreza y talento de muchos de los equinos y los jinetes que los montan. La onda de calor que se ha dejado sentir en los últimos días en buena parte del sur de California, no impidió que miles de personas, la mayoría de origen mexicano se dieran cita a lo largo de la calle C, desde la calle novena hasta la segunda, para presenciar el tradicional desfile e inundaran el centro de la ciudad con los colores verde, blanco y rojo, ondearan banderas mexicanas, se pintaran la cara con los colores de la patria azteca y sintieran el orgullo de ser mexicanos. Puntual fue el inicio, y puntual fue también la finalización, dos horas después a la una de la tarde, terminó el desfile pero la fiesta no paró allí ya que se prolongó en la explanada del parque de La Placita hasta las primeras horas de la noche. El lunes 15 de septiembre como es costumbre en el mismo lugar se llevo a cabo el tradicional Grito de Independencia, el cual fue encabezado por la Lic. 8 Página B8 Consulado de México en Oxnard festeja el mes patrio El consulado de México en Oxnard celebró la conmemoración del 204 aniversario del inicio de la guerra de independencia de México. Para quienes tenemos fuertes lazos emocionales con México, es prácticamente imposible no expresar emociones ante un escenario como el que pudimos vivir y disfrutar la tarde del pasado viernes 12 de este mes de septiembre, en el festejo que, para conmemorar el 204 aniversario del inicio de la guerra de independencia del país azteca, ofreció la representación consular de México. Desde la llegada al lugar del evento, la Heritage Square ubicada en el centro histórico de la ciudad en el cuadro que forman las calles A, B, 6 y 7, se podía sentir ese ambiente mexicano, había de un lado, 3 vistosos cuadrados transparentes, llenos con chiles verdes, cebollas blancas y rojos tomates, expresión de los colores de la bandera mexicana, del otro lado, mesas llenas con antojitos, frutas, chicharrones al puro estilo mexicano, y 3 jarrones de agua fresca, de alfalfa con limón, (verde), la tradicional horchata, blanca, sin faltar la deliciosa Jamaica roja. Personal del consulado de México en Oxnard al recibir a los asistentes colocaban algunos objetos miniatura de uso muy común en México, como los jarritos de barro, o sopladores de palma para hacer aún más mexicano el ambiente. Las notas del mariachi no se hicieron esperar, deleitando a los presentes, muchos de los cuales, entonaron las canciones, y como no intentar cantar, cuando escucha uno México Lindo y Querido, y saltan a la memoria tantos recuerdos de aquella tierra, imposible guardar las emociones y sentimientos. Un poquito después de las 7:00 de la tarde, ya empezando a oscurecer, la Cónsul de Comunidades Patricia Lorenzo, quien fungió como maestro de ceremonias, pidió la presencia de la Lic. Ana Berenice Díaz, cónsul titular, del Sr. John Zaragoza, supervisor del 5To. Distrito del Condado de Ventura y de la Lic. Carmen Ramírez, miembro del consejo de la Ciudad de Oxnard, quienes subieron al balcón de una de las construcciones de la plaza. La presencia de la Banda de Guerra Los Cuervos, que vinieron desde Uriangato, Guanajuato, acompañaron la entrada de las banderas de Estados Unidos, California y México, portadas por la escolta del Consulado de México, en Oxnard. Las banderas fueron entregadas a John Zaragoza, Carmen Ramírez y a la cónsul Berenice Díaz, quien desde el balcón en que se encontraban dio el tradicional grito de independencia, arengando a los presentes con los nombres de los próceres de la independencia de México, terminando con el tradicional Viva México! Que fue coreado en respuesta por los asistentes. Dos sorpresas más nos depararía la noche. La primera, después de que concluyó la actuación del mariachi, Jesús Moreno, de profesión abogado y que presta sus servicios en la sede del consulado, nos deleitó con un par de canciones, acompañado de su guitarra. Una de ellas, Bésame Mucho, arrancó aplausos de los asistentes y muy buenos comentarios. La segunda sorpresa fue para la cónsul Karina Blass, quien cumpliría años al día siguiente 13 de septiembre. Los compañeros de trabajo en el consulado de México, le cantaron las mañanitas, le llevaron su pastel y un lindo ramo de flores. Visiblemente emocionada, Karina agradeció a sus compañeros el detalle, con el que concluyó esta fiesta de para la celebración de la Independencia de México.
