With the decline of John, Jesus rise will begin. Next, we see Jesus calling his first disciples, who rise immediately from their work and abandon everything to answer his summons. Jesus begins in Galilee, called heathen Galilee in Matthew s version of Isaiah 9:1. That Jesus should begin a reconquest of Israel in the same area where Assyria had begun its conquest of the northern kingdom 750 years earlier is significant particularly since the ten northern tribes had ceased to exist for all practical purposes. This is just the first of many signals in Matthew s Gospel that Jesus has come to reconstitute Israel. His choice of twelve apostles, who he says will judge the twelve tribes of Israel, is the clearest indication of this (Matthew 19:28). The journey from Galilee to Jerusalem will have its counterpart in the life of the Church when the disciples are told to return to Galilee from Jerusalem after the Resurrection for a meeting with the risen Lord and as a prelude to their own ministry of proclaiming the Gospel. Matthew s Gospel describes a circuit which is closed at its end but opens onto the future of the Church as well. 3 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: Come Follow Me January 26, 2014 SMOKY MOUNTAIN DEANERY ANNIVERSARY PILGRIMAGE To mark the 25th Anniversary of the Diocese of Knoxville, the Smoky Mountain Deanery invites all to participate in a year-long pilgrimage on the first Sunday of each month, visiting each of the 11 parish churches in the deanery one church each month, in the order in which their parishes were founded. Pilgrims are invited to visit the churches on their assigned day, to attend a Sunday Mass, to spend time in prayer, and make a monetary donation or nonperishable foods to the local food pantry. Sacred Heart Cathedral s special mass day is Sunday, February 2nd. Join us for Healing masses (Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick) at 9:00am and 1:00pm (Spanish). If you have any questions, call the parish office at FIRST FRUITS Through stewardship we are called to be the light of Christ to others. We are all aware of the joy of light. This is the light of understanding and faith, the light to which the Scripture really refers. The gospel begins with Jesus proclaiming the Good News and ends with the Lord calling others to follow Him specifically, Andrew, Simon Peter, James, and John. These men, who were to become the foundation of the Apostles, provide us with a glimpse of our own callings. Each of us is called as a disciple, as a steward, of Jesus Christ. Our challenge is to hear that call, respond to it, seek our own vocation, and live it out as good Stewards of the Good News. Where are you in that process? Each of us needs to pursue our Christian calling. Re lexión del Evangelio de Hoy ~ Juan 1:29-34 Nuestra lectura comienza con el relato de lo que sucedió después de la detención de Juan el Bautista. Con la declinación de Juan, subida de Jesús va a comenzar.
