2 Health Note Public Health Week is April 6 12, the HEALTHIEST NATION 2030, is the theme this year. A time to raise awareness about how we can take care of me and we. Despite what we often hear and read, America is not the healthiest nation in the world. In the U.S., we spend more on health care but live shorter lives and suffer more health problems than our peers in other developed countries. What s next? Join us for National Public Health Week 2015 and be a part of creating the Healthiest Nation. We have a lot of challenges to overcome, but it all starts with a simple fi rst step. YOUR PLEDGE! America s health report card shows that a How? With simple forward-steps of love, action and care. stronger public health system is needed. In the U.S.: Step 1: Creating a healthy me. My promise is to eat well, exercise, get regular checkups, and make healthy choices that can help improve my health and set an example for my family and friends. What can we do to prevent health problems from threatening more lives? Lifestyle interventions are proven to be cost effective in preventing the onset of chronic conditions, when compared to the the cost of 1. The death rate for heart disease is the 2nd highest. 2. Obesity rates across all age groups have been the highest for decades. 3. Adults have the highest prevalence for developing diabetes. In California (and nationally), diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death. Source: American Public Health Association medication. For example, a study found that lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity and weight loss, decreased the development of Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent over a three-year period. Source: American Public Health Association Step 2: Be active. Take breaks during your busy day. Try a variety of fun activities like walking, dancing, playing volleyball, swimming, and more. The activity you choose doesn t need to be intense to be benefi cial. Avoid injury by starting any new activity slowly. Be active for at least 2½ hours a week. Include activities that increase your breathing and heart rate and that strengthen your muscles. Step 3: Eat healthy. Having fun requires energy and fuel. Be sure to eat a variety of foods, including plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grain products. Also include low-fat dairy foods, lean meats, poultry, fi sh, and legumes. Drink lots of water and go easy on the salt, sugar, alcohol, and saturated fat. Good nutrition should be part of an overall healthy lifestyle, in addition to regular physical activity, not smoking, and managing stress. 12 Healthy Recipe Makes 7 servings. Whole wheat fl our adds a nutty fl avor and texture to these great-tasting pancakes. Dish these up with berries and a glass of milk on the side for a wholesome start to your day! Ingredients 1 1/2 cups whole wheat fl our 3 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 3 eggs 1 container vanilla low-fat (6 oz) 3/4 cup water 3 tablespoons canola oil 1 3/4 cups sliced fresh strawberries 1 container strawberry low-fat yogurt (6 oz) Preparation 1. Heat griddle to 375 or heat 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Grease with canola oil if necessary (or spray with cooking spray before heating). 2. In large bowl, mix fl our, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt; set aside. 3. In medium bowl, beat eggs, vanilla yogurt, water and oil with egg beater or wire whisk until well blended. 4. Pour egg mixture all at once into fl our mixture; stir until moistened. 5. For each pancake, pour slightly less than 1/4 cup batter from cup onto hot griddle. Cook 1 or 2 minutes or until bubbly on top, puffed and dry around edges. Turn, cook other side. 6. Top each serving (2 pancakes) with 1/4 cup sliced strawberries and 1 to 2 tablespons strawberry yogurt. 11

Ingredientes 1 1/2 tazas de harina de trigo integral 3 cucharadas de azúcar 1 cucharadita de polvo de hornear 1/2 cucharadita de bicarbonato de sodio 3 huevos 1 envase de yogur de vainilla bajo en grasa (6 oz) 3/4 taza de aqua 3 cucharadas de aceite canola 1 3/4 tazas de fresas frescas picadas 1 yogur de fresa bajo en grasa (6 oz) Preparación 1. Caliente la plancha a 375 o caliente un sartén de 12 pulgadas a fuego mediano. Engrase con aceite canola si es necesario (o rocié con aceite antiadherente en aerosol antes de calentar). 2. En un tazón grande, mezcle la harina, azúcar, polvo de hornear, bicarbonato y la sal, y póngalo a u lado. 3.
