Between his teachers, we can find relevant designers as Bob Noorda, Giancarlo Illiprandi or Mimmo Castellano. ISIA Urbino

6 ERASMUS URBINO MAY Organización de la estancia Erasmus Nos pusimos en contacto con el Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche de Urbino, en Italia, haciéndoles llegar nuestra propuesta para realizar un taller sobre tipografía modular con alumnos de diseño gráfico. Les interesó bastante la propuesta y buscamos una fecha adecuada para hacerlo. El taller consta de varias partes diferenciadas pero que se desarrollan de forma integradora por los profesores participantes: Luis Conde, Susana Murias e Ignacio Vázquez. Se plantea inicialmente la realización de letras modulares realizadas con cuatro o seis módulos preferentemente. Estos dibujos se trasladan a un material absorbente y se montan sobre un taco de madera para su posterior estampación. Con estos dibujos, realizados también con un programa vectorial, se realiza una aplicación digital que permite componer las letras y manipularlas para su utilización en web o en app en dispositivos móviles. Previamente a la movilidad, se acordó un planning con la escuela de Urbino para concretar tiempos y desarrollo de la actividad. Erasmus exchange organisation For this mobility we contacted with Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche, in Urbino, Italy, explaining them our proposal for teaching a workshop on modular typography with Graphic Design students. They answered and show their interest for this proposal and we fetch an appropriate date for this project. The workshop consists of several distinct parts but are developed in a comprehensive way by participating teachers: Luis Conde, Susana Murias and Ignacio Vázquez. Work of students begins performing a modular letters made preferably using four or six modules for each sign. These graphic drawings are transferred into an absorbent material and mounted on a wooden block for later printing. These drawings, made also with a vector drawing software, are used for a digital interactive application that lets you compose and manipulate letters for using for web or app on mobile devices. Before to start mobility, we agreed on a timetable with Urbino School to concrete timeline and how to develop activity with students.

7 ERASMUS URBINO MAY Contenido de las actividades El proyecto consiste en el diseño y la realización de una tipografía modular. Su composición digital y manual con las piezas diseñadas y posible funcionamiento en dispositivos móviles. Las letras están compuestas por módulos básicos que se combinan en dos, o cuatro piezas. La tipografía se construye en formato digital y también manual mediante tacos de madera y otros materiales. Para la realización de la tipografía en soporte digital se utiliza html 5 / css y programación en Acrion script 3. Esto permite la composición y movilidad de las letras para formar palabras y textos. La realización de los módulos en un soporte físico permite la composición manual con otro tipo de materiales propios de un proceso de estampación: tintas, papeles, materiales estampados o impresos, etc. La realización de este proyecto, o la puesta en conocimiento de él, permite la realización de posteriores actividades y trabajos relacionados. Sería interesante realizar composiciones donde se exploren las cualidades del alfabeto, tanto digital como manualmente. Así mismo experimentar con formatos y tamaños diferentes, plegados, encuadernados. La posibilidad también de mezclar imagen y texto proporciona diferentes intenciones y alternativas para la experimentación. Activity Content The project consists of the design and implementation of a modular typeface. Its digital and manual composition with parts designed and possible performance on mobile devices. Letters are comprised of basic modules which are combined into two or four parts. The typography is constructed in digital and manual formatting using wooden blocks and other materials. For the realization of typography in digital media and programming html 5 / css and Acrion script 3 technologies are used. This enables for composition and mobility of letters to form words and texts. The completion of the modules in a physical medium allows manual composition experimenting with other materials from a stamping process: inks, paper, embossed or printed materials, etc. The realization of this project, or its knowledge, allows the realization of subsequent activities and related work. Would be interesting to create compositions where the qualities of the alphabet are explored, both digital and manually. Also experiment with different formats and sizes, folded or bound forms. The possibility also of mixing image and text provides different alternatives for communication and experimentation proposals.

8 ERASMUS URBINO MAY Metodología 1. Presentación con imágenes y texto para la mejor compresión de la propuesta. 2. Ejemplos de otras propuestas similares, comparativas. 3. Explicación también con imágenes de las fases de construcción de los modulos y de los materiales a utilizar. 4. Sesiones de trabajo para la corrección de los dibujos de las piezas. 5. Sesiones de trabajo par la construcción de los tacos y pruebas de estampación. 6. Realización de la aplicación digital. Es un taller pensado para alumnos de diseño gráfico, preferentemente de 2º o 3er. curso. Antes de realizar la movilidad se dio a conocer a los alumnos las bases del taller a través de una página en facebook llamada tipotaco. Tipotaco/ Methodology 1. Presentation with images and text for better understanding of the proposal. 2. Examples of other similar and comparative proposals. 3. Explanation with pictures of the construction phases of the modules and materials to use. 4. Workshops for the correction of the drawings of the parts. 5. Workshops for building two blocks and stamping tests. 6. Performing digital implementation. This workshop is designed for students of graphic design, preferably 2nd or 3rd. academic year. Before mobility it was enabled to students a way to learn the basics of this workshop through a facebook page called tipotaco. Tipotaco/

9 ERASMUS URBINO MAY Luis Conde is a Fine Arts Phd. from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He is teacher of Graphic Design at Escuela Susperior de Diseño in Madrid where he teaches several subjects related to Visual Communication as Projects of Graphic Design, Tipography and Art Direction. Susana Murias is a Fine Arts graduate in Painting from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She is painter and graphic artist, and teacher of Graphic Design at Escuela Susperior de Diseño in Madrid where he teaches several subjects: Foundations of Graphic Design, Tipography and Experimental Graphic Design Projects. She has teached also Engraving and Graphic Techniques. Ignacio Vázquez is Engineer from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and Graduate in Documentation from the UOC. He is teacher of Digital Technology at Escuela Susperior de Diseño in Madrid where he teaches several subjects related to interactive media and design: Interactive Graphics and Digital Tecnology for HTML5 Applications.
