Dear Families, Welcome to Ms. Lemke s 8 th Grade English! Welcome to the school year. I have really enjoyed getting to know your students the past few days, and look forward to a very productive year! In addition to the department information about the class, I wanted to share some important information with you so you can help your student be successful. Technology Technology is at the top of this letter because it is an essential part of my classroom. I believe that to be competitive for jobs in 2018 when today s 8 th graders graduate from high school, they need to be able to work collaboratively online to create and produce documents, presentations etc. To prepare them for these skills, I regularly use technology in my classroom. This includes encouraging students to bring their own devices, such as an ipod touch or a smart phone for certain lessons. For example, many student prefer to use the dictionary on their phone, turn in assignments typed in google docs on their nook, or respond to a discussion question from their ipod. However, I want to clarify that students are never required to bring a device to class. I have classroom computers that can be shared and many other creative ways to ensure that all my students have access. Therefore please talk to you child about how to be responsible and care for any technology device before allowing him or her to bring it to school. Grange is not accountable for any lost or damaged phones, ipods, etc. and I would hate to have a student accidently damage something. Also, there will be many times in class when technology use is not appropriate and I will ask students to have devices off and away. During these times, if a student has a device out it will be logged in the office for him or her to pick up after school using the procedures outlined on page 4 of the student agenda. Since technology based assignments will be a regular part of my class, students will sometimes have homework that requires a computer/phone/ipod to complete. Access to computers is available on campus Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-9:00am in the computer lab, every day at lunch in the library, and in the PRIME Homework Club which meets 3 days a week after school. Furthermore, students are welcome to set up a time to come into my classroom to complete their assignments. Classroom Rules and Procedures Students will be learning many classroom procedures over the next few weeks, but a few key rules are: 1) Respect your own right and the right of others to learn. 2) Use academic and professional language in class. 3) Come prepared for class, including supplies, homework and assignment and an attitude that indicates you re willing to learn. 4) Use only your own materials unless given permission otherwise. 5) Keep our classroom clean including keeping food, drinks, and gum outside or away (Families PLEASE do not allow your child to bring gum to school!!). Consequences for not following these rules can include loss of grizzly points, phone calls home, teacher detention, after school detention, Friday school, and referrals to the office. However, with the support of families, I know all my students are capable of following these rules so everyone can learn. I also enjoy giving positive consequences for students who do a great job following the rules. These positive consequences include earning grizzly points, pride bucks or privilege passes, phone calls home, homework passes, and positive referrals.

Absent, Missing Work, Late Work Policies All missing work (from absences etc.) can be found in the green Work box in the front right corner of the room. The work is in numbered folders corresponding to the number assignment in the grade book. I will be teaching this more specifically to my students in class. All late work MUST be submitted in the blue late work box by my desk with the assignment number written on top. This helps both me and the students keep track of missing work to make sure that they are given credit. Absent If a student is absent, he or she may make up the work upon arriving back at school. It is the student s responsibility to get the work they missed from the green work box. I do not set a time limit because I understand that when kids stay home sick, they are often not feeling 100% when they return. Please encourage your student to make up work from an absence as quickly as possible, as the grade on that assignment will remain a 0 until the work is turned in. Late work Sometimes, students don t manage to turn work on time even when they are at school the day it is due. In this case, students can use one of their two privilege passes (which are also bathroom passes, passes to get a forgotten item in another class etc.) to turn the work in without a consequence. If a student does not have a pass, he or she will have a consequence that affects his/her time rather than his/her grade on the assignment. For example, I may ask the student to stay 30 minutes and organize his/her binder or I may require a paragraph explaining how late work might affect him/her in a job setting. These consequences are determined on a case by case basis, depending on the student s needs and their reason for having late work. Also, since many high school teachers do not allow late work, the consequences will become longer and more difficult as we near the end of the year to help further prepare students for high school. Missing work Whenever possible, I do not allow students to have missing work. I believe missing work indicates the student either did not understand the assignment, or needed help focusing to get it done. Therefore, if your student has missing work, I may have him/her call home and request to stay after school one day so the work can be completed. Likewise, if you notice on Parent Portal that your child has a missing assignment, please ask him/her about it and encourage him/her to turn it in. Grades Grades are determined by the quality, not just quantity, of work a student completes and the improvement he/she shows on each standard. AR is 15% of your child s English grade. Tests, quizzes, class work, homework, and essays and projects make up the remaining 85% and are weighted in the gradebook based on difficulty level and the amount of time they take rather than category. I use the standard grading scale in my classroom: A B C D 59 or below F I also try to post grades regularly in the classroom so students can keep track. They are also available through parent portal. If you have any questions or concerns about your student s grade, please contact me as soon as possible so we can work as a team to help your student succeed.

A Final Note Thank you for taking the time to read and discuss these procedures with your child. I look forward to spending the year helping your child prepare for high school and beyond. If you ever have a concern or question, please feel free to contact me! I prefer , but you can also leave a message on my classroom phone ( ). I am also available for appointments before or after school most days. It is a pleasure to be working with this group of talented students, and I look forward to a great school year. Sincerely, Danielle Lemke 8 th Grade English Grange Middle School Please help me get to know your student better by answer the questions when you sign this portion and return it to school. Student Name Student signature acknowledging rules and procedures Class Period Parent/Guardian Printed Name Signature acknowledging rules and procedures Questions: 1) What do you think your child s biggest strength is? 2) What is your goal for your child this year? 3) Anything else you want me to know about your child?
