2 PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION OBJECTIVES The humanity seminar will give you a broad vision on a specific topic outside the business environment. The idea is to open your mind, to enrich your general knowledge and to develop your critical thinking. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The programme will be delivered by international professors to a multicultural group (French students + International students). Teaching Organisation A choice of 2 Modules out of the list provided in the catalog. A range of topics offered in English, Spanish & German. 3 COURSE DESCRIPTION 1 : UNA HISTORIA DE AMERICA LATINA Presentation: Este curso se da como meta proponer una visión general de la Historia de América Latina desde los tiempos precolombinos hasta hoy. Dada la importancia a todos niveles (tanto demográfico como económico o político) de estos países tan diversos, parece interesante para un estudiante de Master en Escuela de Comercio poder comprender los problemas, las tensiones, los recursos, las posibilidades de Hispanoamérica dentro de una perspectiva histórica clara. professeur: Nejma Kermele «Agrégée» de Castellano (1991), titular de un Doctorado en Estudios Hispánicos e iberoamericanos de la Universidad de Burdeos (2000) y «Maître de Conférences» desde el año 2001 en el Departamento de Estudios Ibéricos e iberoamericanos de la Universidad de Pau, N. Kermele trabaja esencialmente en el mundo colonial andino (siglos XVI-XVII). Su tesis estudió la instalación del Estado colonial en el Perú de los años 1570 a través de las Leyes de Don Francisco de Toledo, quinto virrey del Perú. Trabajó luego en la noción de «proyecto político», lo cual desembocó en un coloquio organisado en Pau. Actualmente, sigue estudiando el pensamiento político que se desarrollaba en aquellos tiempos tanto en España como en América a través del análisis de las Leyes de Indias y de textos de reformadores. Trabajo también en la labor de las órdenes religiosas (los Jesuitas esencialmente) y en los conflictos entre Iglesia y Estado en América. Secuencia 1: América precolombina América existió por supuesto antes de la llegada de los Españoles, antes del encuentro entre los dos mundos. Esta primera clase interrogará en un primer tiempo la geografía americana y estudiará luego la Historia y las culturas precolombinas más conocidas, esencialmente los Aztecas, los Mayas y los Incas. Secuencia 2: La Conquista Española El descubrimiento colombino no puede entenderse sin una comprensión aun rápida de la coyuntura europea. Estudiaremos las condiciones que permitieron tal descubrimiento, por qué fue llevado a cabo por los españoles, la intervención de los Portugueses, cómo las dos potencias se repartieron el mundo. Por fin veremos el desarrollo de los grandes descubrimientos (México, Perú) a través de las figuras míticas pero a veces mal conocidas de Hernán Cortés y de Francisco Pizarro. Secuencia 3: El legado colonial Estudiaremos esencialement el funcionamiento del Estado colonial, su administración, su fiscalidad, su economía. Se trata de ver cómo España pudo organisar tan inmensos territorios y qué beneficios pudo sacar de esta dominación. Evocaremos también los problemas sociales, económicos, religiosos e éticos que tal dominación suscitó tanto en América como en España. 3

4 Secuencia 4: De las guerras por las Independencias hasta la Revolución mexicana ( ). Estudiaremos las luchas independentistas centrándonos en las fases esenciales, en los tres focos primordiales (México, Nueva Granada, Buenos Aires) y en los actores más conocidos (Simón Bolívar, Francisco de Miranda, José de San Martín). Estas revoluciones permitieron el nacimiento de nuevos Estados, la formación de Naciones. Conocer la constitución de este nuevo mapa americano es esencial para comprender las revueltas y revoluciones - como las revueltas indígenas en los Andes y la famosa Revolución mexicana - que marcaron el principio del siglo XX. Secuencia 5: De las dictaduras hacia las democracias (XX-XXI) En esta última secuencia, evocaremos las diversas revoluciones y dictaduras que marcaron América durante el siglo XX (Cuba, Chile, Perú, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay) analisando los factores socio-económicos que permitieron tales acontecimientos. Estudiaremos la instalación de democracias aún frágiles y los problemas económicos, políticos, sociales de América hoy día, de la América contemporánea confrontada también al fenómeno de la Mondialización. 2. AMERICA LATINA : LA OTRA CARA DE LA MEDALLA Presentation : América Latina posee una gran riqueza cultural e histórica. Continente de emigración, la crisis ha rebelado que los latinoamericanos saben reaccionar frente a los problemas. No obstante el año 2013 rebelan grandes paradojas que, a veces, constituyen un lastre para el progreso de un continente tan diverso y rico como es el latinoamericano. El presente seminario propone el estudio de diferentes temáticas a partir de la actualidad del año Tras un estudio exhaustivo de informaciones genuinas y controvertidas, los estudiantes podrán proponer su punto de vista y debatir sobre las diversas peculiaridades y problemáticas de dicho continente. Profesora de comunicación. Session 1 : Colombia entre los carteles de la droga. Colombia se asimila a menudo al país del café, de la droga y de los raptos. La reciente liberación de Ingrid Betancourt ha mostrado una cara de Colombia que el gobierno del país hubiese deseado callar. No obstante, en Colombia se ha iniciado una lucha férrea para invertir este proceso. El gobierno colombiano no sólo ha invertido las cifras de la inseguridad sino que pretende estar convirtiéndose en un ejemplo que hay que seguir Realidad o ficción? Bolivia sigue los pasos de Venezuela. Bolivia ha promulgado el 20 de mayo de 2013 una ley autorizando al presidente Evo Morales a presentarse a un tercer mandato. Los oponentes a esta reforma consideran que dicha ley va a debilitar a la Constitución boliviana. 4

5 Bolivia posee grandes cantidades de litio presentes en las baterías de todo tipo. Cómo el gobierno de izquierdas de Evo Morales gestiona esta riqueza energética? Session 2 : San Salvador y las maras. Las maras, o pandillas, no surgieron en El Salvador sino en los Estados Unidos. Por qué los jóvenes entran en las maras? Cuáles son sus signos de pertenencia? Cuál es la razón de tanta violencia? Session 3 : México un país tan grande como sus peculiaridades. La lucha libre constituye un verdadero espectáculo popular entre el deporte y el teatro. Llaves aéreas acrobáticas, luchadores enmascarados y combates rápidos: el catch americano sale del ring. Méjico es el país del mundo que más obesos cuenta en sus filas entre niños y adultos. El sedentarismo, el junk-fon y más concretamente el consumo de sodas. Por qué a los mejicanos les gusta tanto beber soda? Las mulas mexicanas. La mayoría de las mulas arrestadas son norteamericanas y sin embargo a los guionistas hollywoodienses les encanta atribuir este papel a los mejicanos Cuál es la realidad? El nuevo Detroit está en Méjico en dónde la industria automovilística va viento en popa y más de doce fabricantes han elegido este país para implantar fábricas de montaje. Méjico constituye el octavo país productor mundial de vehículos ligeros 80% de los cuales están destinados a la exportación. Por qué las marcas eligen Méjico? El malinchismo: un anuncio de la compañía aérea mexicana para contratar únicamente personas de piel clara ha provocado una gran polémica n México? Esta discriminación no es propia al país fronterizo con los EEUU El país de Zapata debería de hacer otra Revolución? Session 4 : Costa Rica Costa Rica es el único país del mundo sin ejército desde Cómo puede vivir este país sin ejército a pesar de las amenazas de invasión de los países fronterizos? Cuál es la fuerza económica de Costa Rica? Guatemala o el riesgo de ser ambientalista. Guatemala fue considerado durante mucho tiempo como el segundo pulmón de América Latina sin embargo este título está amenazado con la tala masiva de diferentes árboles para las explotaciones mineras y por los proyectos inmobiliarios. El drama no es sólo ecológico sino también humano: más de 50 guardias forestales o militantes ecologistas han sido asesinados entre 1989 Y 2012 y sin embargo los viajes turísticos continúan proponiendo una imagen idílica quiénes son los culpables de estos asesinatos? Session 5 : Nicaragua aprovecha la energía de sus volcanes. Con una impresionante cadena de veinticinco volcanes, desde 2006, Nicaragua intenta aprovechar esta energía geotérmica verde; Cómo realiza dicho proyecto? Perú. En México los raptos virtuales se han vuelto una moda para conseguir dinero fácil. Los malhechores hacen creer a las familias de las victimas que el rapto es real, pero quiénes son esas víctimas? Sin embargo el rapto no es monopolio exclusivo de México o de Colombia. 5

6 Heran Migoya evoca en un comic el secuestro de su mujer en Lima a finales de los 90. Cómo muestra el autor, a través del comic, la realidad peruana? Session 6 : Panamá : el canal de Panamá celebrará en agosto de 2014 su centenario. Mientras tanto, la vía marítima que enlaza los océanos Pacífico y Atlántico están en obras de ampliación hasta el 2007 y ello con el fin de facilitar el paso de los grandes navíos. En qué consisten esas obras faraónicas? Cuál es la tarifa para poder atravesar por el canal? La crisis no parece haber afectado a Panamá sin embargo otras complicaciones parecen dificultar las obras. En efecto, los trabajadores amenazan parar las obras enfrentándose así a la compañía española Sacyr que lidera el consorcio de las obras del canal. Qué consecuencias tendrá dicho enfrentamiento para la economía y el comercio panameños? Ecuador, un Eldorado para los españoles. Ecuador se ha convertido en uno de los destinos preferidos de la emigración española tras la crisis del Por qué los españoles optan por este destino? Session 7 : Cuba : Por fin la apertura? Tras las reformas iniciadas por Raúl Castro y el deshiele de relaciones con los EEUU qué opinan los cubanos de Miami? Hay una lucha por el poder en Cuba. Entre las reformas de Raúl Castro, las relaciones con EEUU y la dependencia de Venezuela, Cuba se encuentra en una encrucijada; Cuál es la solución económica para ese país al borde de la asfixia? Los médicos se han convertido en una materia prima exportable de Cuba. Desde hace mas de medio siglo la medicina constituye en Cuba uno de los mayores éxitos de la Revolución cubana. Políticos como Chávez fueron a operarse en la isla. Miles de médicos cubanos ejercen en países de América Latina sin embargo las blusas blancas empiezan a encontrar reveses. Cuáles son esas dificultades? Uruguay : Argentina ha autorizado el matrimonio homosexual en 2010 mientras que Colombia lo ha rechazado. Uruguay, llamado Suiza de América Latina, acaba de adoptar el matrimonio homosexual y ha ido mucho más lejos adoptando también la libertad de consumo de ciertas drogas. Dicha decisión es sin embargo muy controvertida. Qué reacciones ha provocado y por qué? 3 : DEUTSCHLAND UND DIE ÖKOLOGIE Man kommt oft in Versuchung, Ökologie auf das Thema Umwelt zu beschränken. Allerdings definierte bereits 1866 der deutsche Biologe Ernst Heckel diesen Begriff folgendermaβen: Ökologie ist die gesamte Wissenschaft von den Beziehungen des Organismus zur umgebenden Außenwelt, wohin wir im weiteren Sinne alle Existenz-Bedingungen rechnen können. 1987, im Zuge der Brundtland-Kommission wurde dieser Ansatz zur Begründung für das Konzept der Nachhaltigkeit. Hierbei kommen drei Aspekte der menschlichen Tätigkeiten zum Tragen: Die soziale, die ökologische und die ökonomische Dimension. Dieses Seminar soll einen Einblick in die Art und Weise vermitteln, wie man sich in Deutschland mit dieser Frage auseinandersetzt. 6

7 Allemagne et l écologie La tentation est grande de réduire l écologie à ses enjeux environnementaux. Cependant, dès 1866, le biologiste allemand Ernst Heckel désignait l écologie de cette façon : «( ) la science des relations des organismes avec le monde environnant, c'est-à-dire, dans un sens large, la science des conditions de l existence.» En 1987, suite à la commission Brundtland, cette approche a servi pour fonder le concept de développement durable. Selon ce concept, l activité humaine doit être considérée sous trois aspects : la dimension sociale, environnementale et économique. EINBLICKE IN DIE DEUTSCHE KULTUR UND DEUTSCHLAND HEUTE Die Kenntnisse in Bezug auf Deutschland sind heutzutage oft auf die jüngste Vergangenheit und die Wirtschaftskrise oder die Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts begrenzt. Es gibt jedoch noch einiges mehr zu wissen und zu lernen. Natürlich spielt die Bundesrepublik eine wichtige Rolle auf internationaler Ebene, aber seit wann ist das so? Und warum? Wie alt ist Deutschland eigentlich und wer war Bismarck? Hatte Deutschland Kolonien und wie viele Reiche gib es eigentlich? Dieser Lehrgang zielt darauf hin Kenntnisse zu vermitteln, die bisher vernachlässigt wurden und gleichzeitig ein besseres Verständnis der deutschen Kultur zu schaffen. 1. Wichtige Momente in der Geschichte Deutschlands Überblick über historische Daten, Ereignisse und Persönlichkeiten, die in die Geschichte eingegangen sind. 2. Einfluss der deutschen Auswanderung auf die USA Warum Auswanderung? Wann und wozu? Wie kommt es, dass die Deutschen in die Vereinigten Staaten auswanderten und welche Folgen hatte diese Massenbewegung? 3. Deutschlands Kolonien Ein Trauerspiel in 3 Akten Einblick in die Kolonien Deutschlands in Asien, und Afrika. 4. Deutscher Widerstand im 3. Reich 8

9 In ganz Europa haben einzelne Gruppen und Individuen Widerstand gegen die Nazis geleistet; in Deutschland auch. 5. Die Nachkriegsjahre und der Einfluss der USA auf die BRD Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg war Deutschland zerstört und wäre fast ein sozialistischer Staat geworden, wenn die Vereinten Nationen unter Leitung der USA nicht gehandelt hätten. 6. Die Gegenkultur Hippies made in Deutschland Der Geist der Lebensreform hat Hippies aus überall animiert. Das jedoch schon seit dem 19. Jahrhundert. Vom Wandervogel nach Woodstock. 7. Neue Deutsche Welle & Pop Kultur Was hört man in Deutschland eigentlich für Musik? Wie stehen die Deutschen zu Punk? Wer ist Boney M.? Gibt es deutschen Rap? 8. Deutschland und Europa Wie steht die BRD zu Europa, der Türkei und Exportbeschränkungen? 5 : PSYCHOLOGICAL AND GEOPOLITICAL ASPECTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Class 1: The course will begin with a brief teacher introduction, followed by a review of course objectives, structure, and marking policy. Class content will also include presentation/discussion of human evolutionary development, the nature of human behavior, the structure of the United States government, and the election process in the USA Class 2: This will be a class on the American Gun Culture. We will discuss relevant historical antecedents, current gun policy, the role of money and lobby interests in shaping gun policy, and the presentation of some rational for the American gun mentality. Class 3: This class will focus on the American version of Capitalism. Again, we will look at historical antecedents, the role of government in the market place, and the role of private money as it interfaces with governmental economic policy (i.e., the role of lobbyists and private interest groups). Class 4: This class will look at the issue of Race Relations in the United States. We will examine a specific model of how discrimination develops within an individual (and on a societal level as well). We will also examine the effects of the racial division within American society (economic and social imbalance). This class will also include a guest presenter, an African-American man who will discuss his personal experiences with discrimination both in the USA and France. Class 5: The class will be a cross-cultural comparison between American and French cultures. We will look at the role of family, food, work, holiday time, community, and money. Further, 9

10 we will examine if the American culture of Money has pierced the French mentality and, if so, what effects this is having on French life. Class 6: Students will make group presentations about various aspects of American life and society. This will be a marked exercise and will be part of their continuous assessment evaluation. Details as to the content of the presentations will be discussed at a later point. Class 7: Students will watch a video of mass Food Production in the USA. It/we will examine the role of private money as it impacts governmental oversight of the food industry and the role of lobbyists. This will be followed by a final, written examination. 6 : AUSTRALIA: SURF, SAND AND ROCK'N'ROLL, TRUE OR FICTION Presentation: For many Europeans, Australia is a land of dreams. Home of ACDC and Midnight Oil, it is the land of eternal sunshine, where the blond haired, brown bodied locals run down for a quick surf on their lunch breaks and meet up for Happy Hour at the local pub with their mates after work. It is a multi-cultural society where everyone is relaxed, friendly and most of all welcome or is it? Through examination of key events in Australia s history as a western civilization, students will come to understand some of the core values and principles that have developed into what we know today as the Australian culture. With an introduction to some of the darker aspects of Australian history, specifically those of the treatment of indigenous people and other minority groups, students will be encouraged to take a balanced view of the country and decide for themselves Australia: surf, sand and rock n roll truth or fiction? Session 1 : A brief history of Australia Students will gain an understanding of Australian history covering pre-discovery, discovery and first settlement by Europeans. Students will also gain an understanding of global events that led to discovery and settlement. Session 2 : The Aussie Batler: an Australian Icon Students will gain an understanding a number of Australian icons representative of different aspects of Australian culture and historical development: 1. Folklore Icon: Waltzing Matilda 2. Folklore Icon: Ned Kelly 3. Sporting Icon: Pharlap 4. Music Icons: ACDC and Cold Chisel Students will gain an understanding of Australian culture and the values that are representative of Australian culture as embodied in the icons discussed, in particular that of The Aussie Battler Session 3 : The first Australian: a look at the Aboriginal culture Students will gain an understanding of the nature of occupation of the land of Australia prior to European settlement. Students will gain an understanding of 2 elements of the culture of traditional owners of Australia: 10

11 1. The Dreamtime 2. Songlines Students will gain an understanding of the current social and political issues surrounding indigenous Australians. Session 4 : The States and territories Students will gain an understanding of the different regions of Australia as represented by the 7 states and territories. Students will gain an understanding of the different flavours of each of the states and territories regarding: 1. Climate 2. Cost of living 3. Social and political atmosphere Students will be introduced to different highlights of 4 states which may be useful in planning a holiday or working trip and will provide a deeper understanding of the Australian culture relating to the different regions Session 5 : Presentations & Final conclusions In groups students will present one major city of Australia speaking about: 1. History 2. Size geography and population 3. Climate 4. Industry 5. Tourism 6. Cost of Living Students will watch a documentary about the daily life of a family in urban Sydney and some comments by French people who live in Australia. Students will give their final thoughts on their opinions of Australia and Australian life and if it really the land of surf, sand and rock n roll. 7 : TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY: IF IT AIN T NEW IT S BEEN UPGRADED OR TRASHED! Presentation: OUR world today is changing fast due to the introduction and upgrading of technology. Most people say technology has brought positive results because of the improving social well- being in our societies. However, there are people who are sceptical about the positive changes that technology has brought about. ( This course is a think-tank for students to consider closely and even personally how technology affected, has affected and will affect society, the individual and all we are surrounded by including nature and the universe. Using any and all sources we will explore the benefits, curses, banalities and benign realities of technology The ebb and flow of the class will be determined by the dynamics of interaction and participation of the students who will in effect be the driving force of the direction the class can take. 12 Paul Terry Nash, Married, 3 kids, a dog and a cat, Teacher of English and Culture with a passion for Thanksgiving, American Football and French wine As an American living in France for the past 20 years I have done my utmost to Americanize those French who have had the fortunate (for some) and unfortunate (for a few) chance to have crossed my path. My efforts have been partly good, partly bad and whenever I read the newspaper very often it comes across as ugly. Yet, I persevere in my endeavor to turn you to the Side of the Force which is all American for in my soul that is what I am..an All American. In the end only you can say which side it truly is Join me in this adventure and let s look at the truth, find the lies and the deception, discover the good, the bad and the ugly and come away with an understanding of what it means to be Americanised. And if you are lucky you may even discover what it means to be French-i-fied. Projected lesson themes. A look at technology thru the eyes of each student, recognising its role in our lives Lesson 2 (2 hours) The Generation Gap: Why can t grandpa figure out facebook? An irreverent look at how our parents and grandparents have both inspired and denied technology. Lesson 3 (2 hours) Big Brother: In today s world we live interconnected and nothing is sacred, hidden or private. How do we confront the threat of losing privacy while gaining the advantages of technology Lesson 4 (2 hours) Environmental Perspectives: How many computers per year end up in the trash, literally. What are they made of, are they safe once left to nature, who benefits, who loses??. Lesson 5 (2 hours) The Role of Social Technologies: People now have choices and they are often making them with friends or communities. The impact is being felt from politics to purchases to the ways we seek knowledge. Everything can be influenced by an individual or collection of individuals with an objective. As these forces of democratization collide with those of globalization and fragmentation, differences in ideas, cultures, beliefs and systems are being exposed and in some cases exacerbated. Tribalism, nationalism and cultural conflict have been rising, opposing the forces of globalization and integration. As the democratization of everything gains ground the question is whether it will be a positive force in bringing people together to bridge these divides (integration) or contribute to rising differences and tensions (fragmentation). 12

13 Lesson 6 (2 hours) The Future. This class began by looking at the past, analysing the present. Now we must look to the future. In this session we discover what was once fantasy and science fiction and discover just how real the possibilities are for that which was so recently considered impossible i.e. space travel, miniaturisation, drones, medical marvels, etc. Here we also look at opportunities for business school students and what they can aspire to as careers. The future is already changing our past making the present completely impotent and requiring a good look at what the options are for a life of plenty Lesson 7 (3 hours) Group Presentations: Each group (5 students per group) will have chosen a topic from a list provided by the professeur in lesson. This topic will be presented to the class. Presentations will be marked immediately and feedback provided in class formatively. 8. THE WORLD WE LIVE IN: THE FUTURE OF EVERYTHING Overall learning Objective: The world changes at breakneck speed, what is here today seems to be gone tomorrow and so much seems ephemeral. Yet while we look ahead for the next big thing we still need to look closely to the present and the past. What is this world we live in, what will it be tomorrow and can the past give us a clue? This course is a think-tank for students to consider closely and even personally the events, truths, lies, unknowns, certainties and desires that make us long for or wish to forget the past, that dominate our present and pre-occupy our days with wonder or dread of the future. The ebb and flow of the class will be determined by the dynamics of interaction and participation of the students who will in effect be the driving force of the direction the class can take. This class is intended as forum of discussion and the student will be encouraged to contribute freely. That said consider this truth.. the only constant in life is Change and it has become simultaneously fast-moving and permanent,. To understand how change affects us we must ask important questions about the past, what role it plays in the present and to what extent both will influence our future, this course will attempt to enable the student to be conscious of consequences and the net effect of choices that life will offer and that they must face in their different personal, business and community roles. Ultimately, the goal will be to empower the student to see their own personal importance in affecting change or ensuring stability where it matters and thus reformulating society to the betterment of all or not.
