For Logan Northgate School Sheridan, Colorado SEPTEMBER 2015 Reaching for Higher Standards in Math Math teacher Jessica Hulsey In the Fort Logan Northgate School mathematics classrooms, there s a new, higher bar for students to reach. Math teacher Jessica Hulsey puts it in simple terms: We re bringing in a lot of different ideas that weren t in effect before, she says. There s a higher sense of rigor and the expectations are much more than they have been in the past. Many students are taking accelerated math classes to learn prealgebra, algebra or geometry. They are completing classes at the high school level in order to get ahead, so they can enter 9 th grade even closer to being college -ready. Collaboration with fifth-graders at Fort Logan Elementary is being strengthened so there is more of a seamless instruction pipeline between grade levels (something that will be much easier when the new school opens in January). And cross-curricular work among faculty at FLNS means that science teachers are helping math instructors by shoring up student skills with fractions and converting, for instance, centimeters to meters. (Continued on Page 4) PAWS is back! PAWS (Parents active within Sheridan) had its inaugural meeting for the year and is off to a great start with over 17 parents attending, including parent representation from the high school, middle school, Ft. Logan and Alice Terry. The group voted to keep Melissa Silvia as acting president and Maria Ocampo and Maribel Payan serving as treasures. Jessica Rivera was voted in as secretary and Nelly Limon was named fundraising chair. 2 Page 2 Letter from The Principal Dear Parents/Guardians: As I sit to write the first newsletter of the year, I realize it is a milestone. It is just another testament to the power our community has in creating excitement and possibilities for our kids. The new Fort Logan Northgate School is REAL and THRIVING. The building is going up in record time and is on target for receiving the student body and staff in January. We are working on offering some opportunities for parents and students to tour the buildings, so please stay tuned. Our young Commanders have embraced the changes and are showing exemplary leadership. I am proud to report that both campuses showed major changes in growth and achievement in our students TCAP scores last year. Of particular note was our double digit improvements in achievement in 3 rd and 4 th grade reading and 4 th and 8 th grade math. Our academic growth in mathematics was extraordinary particularly at the 5 th, 6 th and 8 th grade levels. Our students grew immensely in 7 th grade reading, 6 th and 7 th grade writing too, also, making double digits jumps. It is a testament to the academic progress our students are making and to the teachers working hard to support kids. We are looking forward to the continued success of our students. As we move forward, we intend to create many fun and exciting opportunities for kids, from fall sports, to assemblies to extracurricular events after school, to some extra tutoring or enrichment opportunities. We hope that students continue to feel welcome and excited about the happenings at FLN. Thank you for entrusting us to take care of your young person! We look forward to helping them find their individual success, through them living their truth, being heard, singing loud and being real! (It s a motto we have adopted this year to help our youngsters discover their inner strength, to gain confidence in their abilities and be proud enough to share it.) All the best! Ian Wells, Executive Principal Fort Logan Northgate Go Commanders!

Page 3 Dear Fort Logan Northgate 3-5 Families, Welcome back! I am so excited to begin another year as the principal at Fort Logan. Although, I am a bit saddened by the fact that this will be the last few months that Fort Logan Elementary will be in existence, I am overjoyed for the opportunities that await our students as they move into our new school. In order to prepare students for our move we have worked hard to establish ourselves as FORT LOGAN NORTHGATE COM- MANDERS! To help in making this transition I have spoken with students about the main job of a commander and that is to be a LEADER! So many of our students are stepping up to this challenge and showing outstanding leadership in all that they do from exhibiting excellence in learning in the classroom, to moving through the hallways in a respectful and courteous way to using manners in the cafeteria. I am so proud of our awesome students and staff! Over the last three years Fort Logan Elementary has made great strides in achievement. We have moved from being one of the lowest-achieving elementary schools in the state to one of the highest in growth in the metro area. Much of this success is due to the outstanding instruction that occurs on a daily basis and the staff that work with your students each day. We are excited to report that all 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th grade students will receive science and social studies as part of their regular class schedule as well as technology class. Both of these class offerings will allow students to increase their background knowledge in varied subjects and give students the opportunity to engage in using technology to enhance their learning. All students are also enrolled in either and ALD or an ELD class. ALD stands for Academic Language Development and ELD stands for English Language Development. These classes are designed to help students develop language skills that will aid them in communicating more effectively and strengthening their expressive vocabulary skills leading to stronger literacy skills. The changes, growth and improvements that are occurring at Fort Logan Northgate 3-5 are immense. Thank you so much for your continued and steadfast support of FLN and the Sheridan Schools.

Page 4 (Math Continued from Page 1) The new national Common Core standards, explains Hulsey, are demanding. To be successful, she says, students must have mastered fractions, decimals and integers before 8 th grade. How are students responding? Hulsey says the new standards were a wake-up call for some students, who thought they were doing well. I m constantly reminding them to come in for help to get caught up, says Hulsey. I am noticing that they are surprised by how difficult the new standards are, but students are putting in the effort to learn the material in order to be successful in high school. The math team includes Jamie Rotar (sixth grade), Kim Kenton (seventh), Jessica Hulsey (eighth) and new math intervention teacher Lori Chacon. Meaghan Tytko has been invaluable to the entire math team as she works with SPED students on a daily basis. Additionally, the team teaches an honors group, pre-algebra, and intervention classes, too, using the Big Ideas curriculum to provide consistency among all grade levels. Hulsey says the fundamentals of mathematics particularly multiplication tables, division, integers and fractions remain a weakness for students and she encourages parents to look for opportunities after school and on weekends to shore up the concepts. The Common Core Standards clearly tell our students what the world is expecting of college graduates and career-ready young adults when it comes to math skills, says Hulsey. There is no reason, with the right curriculum and solid instruction, that our students can t outperform any other students out there. (PAWS Continued from Page 1) Jessica Rivera was voted in as secretary and Nelly Limon was named fundraising chair. The main order of business for the first night was to organize the pancake breakfast that PAWS will volunteer at for Sheridan Celebrates. The breakfast will be the kickoff to the annual Sheridan Celebrates community festival and will be held at the middle school cafeteria from 7:30-10:30am on Saturday, September 27. Jean Ray of Sheridan celebrates worked with PAWS to obtain donations for the food that will be served. Through these donations and the volunteer efforts of PAWS, the proceeds from the breakfast will benefit activities for Sheridan students. The group also decided to have students enter a logo contest for a new PAWS logo, with the winning student receiving a $25.00 gift card. The final order of business was a preview of upcoming events for the year. Parents from all Sheridan schools are welcome and encouraged to attend the next meeting of PAWS on Wed., Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. in the Sheridan Middle School

Page 5 Teacher of the Month Meaghan Tytko Question: What do you teach? Meaghan: I teach 2 small group math classes and then support in one 6th, one 7th and one 8th grade math class. Question: Just how excited are you about the move to the new school? Have you toured it yet? Meaghan: I have been lucky enough to tour the new building and am very excited for our move. I think the opportunities that will be provided to our students in the new building will help us continue to work towards postsecondary options for all. Additionally, I am eager to work with a larger group of colleagues. I have learned so much from the teachers in the 6-8 school and am looking forward to having the same experience with the 3-5 teachers. Our students are so deserving of a quality education in a brand new facility and I cannot wait for the new building to open! Question: Where did you go to college and what did you think of your college experience? Meaghan: I went to college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and it was a wonderful experience! I met so many lifelong friends and learned about so many interesting topics. I loved that Miami was a liberal arts college, because even though I majored in education, I was allowed to take classes in Art History, Botany, Business, and even horseback riding! Miami also provided me with the opportunity to study abroad in which I visited 15 European cities in 5 weeks. I feel so fortunate to have attended college because it allowed me to fulfill my dream of becoming an educator! Question: What are you reading right now? Meaghan: I read the Wall Street Journal in the mornings before school and I just started Outlander by Diana Gabaldon as per Anne Towey's suggestion! Question: What do you like to do in your spare time? Meaghan: In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my fiancé, Patrick. We like to hike, bike and run outdoors. Additionally I enjoy reading, cooking, watching HGTV and taking way too many pictures of my pets! Question: Can you tell us one thing about you that most people don't know? Meaghan: My fiancé and I met in 3rd grade where I wrote in my diary that he was the nicest boy in the class and we have been dating since our junior year of High school! Question: Care to tell us about your family? Any pets? Meaghan: I have the most loving and supportive parents who live back in Ohio. My older brother, John, lives in Chicago. Patrick and I have a cat named Leo and a black lab named Louis. Question: What do you wish you had known in middle school that you know now? Meaghan: I wish I had taken the time to write a journal when I was in middle school because it would be so neat to go

Page 6 Teacher of the Month Ken White: Question: What's your role at Fort Logan Northgate School? Ken: My role at Fort Logan, this year, is as a fourth grade teacher. Since working at Sheridan School District (this is my sixth year here), I have taught 7th and 8 th grade Language Arts, fourth, and fifth grades. I am the team lead for fourth grade and am on the leadership co-hort with Dr. Eddy. I serve on many committees in our building and district. Question: Have you toured the new school yet? Ken: Yes and I even signed my name to the wall. When I visited, it was still in the beginning stages. I was thrilled to see the new layout and that the plans (which we worked on in the planning committee) coming to fruition. I am so excited to be in the new building. I also looking forward to seeing my former students and how they have blossomed. Question: Where did you go to college and what did you think of your college experience? Ken: I attended sever al schools: Pima Community College, Pr escott College for my Bachelor s, and Nor ther n Ar izona University for my Masters, Principal, and Superintendent certifications. College, for me, was tough. I returned to college after the military, marriage, opening and running a thriving business, and having three small children. Question: What s the best thing about being a teacher? Ken: The thing I like best about being a teacher of course it has to be the relationships built with the families and the children. I love teaching especially when the proverbial light bulb comes on. Question: What did you do last summer? Ken: Last summer, I stayed close to home as I truly, am a homebody. I planted and worked in the garden, went to the gym, shopped and otherwise, enjoyed the beautiful Colorado summer. I also crossed off an assortment of honey do s and rested. Question: Can you tell us one thing about you that most people don't know? Ken: I served in the U.S. Navy for three and a half years, three of which were in Iceland. I met Alexander Haig, saw President Ronald Regan, and Mikhail Gorbachev there. We flew to the top of the Earth around the North Pole where they painted our noses blue. Lots of adventurous tours were available as well Question: Care to tell us about your family? Any pets? Ken: My wife and I will be married for 25 years this coming April. We have three kids, one daughter Samantha is 23 and finishing her Masters of Architecture at CU of Denver this May. Our second daughter is studying Pre-Med and Spanish at Marist College in Poughkeepsie New York and will finish her Bachelors this May. They are both softball pitchers and we traveled extensively around the country competing. Our son is 16 and a Junior in High School. We have four dogs (Angel, a St. Bernard, Izzy, a standard Poodle, Biscuit, a Great Pyrenees/lab mix, and Ginger a toy poodle, two cats, and four chickens.) Question: What do you wish you'd known in middle school that you know now?

Page 7 Instructional Corner (Grades 6 8): Notes from Amy Kolquist, Instructional Principal Ft. Logan Northgate Secondary is excited to hit the ground running on the tail of the successful growth scores indicated in last year s state testing. Having added a math interventionist and expanding the offerings of sheltered civics classes, the school is excited to continue to grow and enhance the student experience as Ft. Logan Northgate. In addition to keeping the Achieve 3000 reading support the school used last year to meet students instructional levels in reading, the school will work with the district in piloting the I-Ready assessment and instructional programs for both reading and math. The program is designed to target student needs in specific standards in both of these areas and then give support to teachers and interventionists to enhance their ability to address these needs in the classroom. The school has continued its focus on higher order thinking through its planning partnership with the nationally renowned understanding by design program. A focus on academic electives has kept research and debate, MESA, creative writing, drama and video production on the schedule, along with expanding the offerings of students to include classes such as the geometry of art, science lab and exploration, math application, 21 st century tech skills, writing for college readiness and environmental science. The school has also continued its commitment to the whole student experience by expanding its arts program with offerings such as performance violin and art and social justice, while keeping the band program strong as well as continuing diversified PE courses such as creative movement and sports and conditioning. As eager as our students to learn, our teachers are continuing their successful pilot of the peer observation program, and continue to look for new and innovative ways to engage students through 21 st century skills. Keep your eyes out for increased parent communication through technology and feel free to come by and get a visitors pass to see our teachers and students in action!
