September 4, 2012 Dear Families, Welcome to the fifth year at Bronx Community! We are always excited about the beginning of the year. We re looking forward to a year filled with new discoveries, newly-developed skills and passions, new projects, and (eventually) a new home! Even as we grow and change, it s important to hold onto our mission to know each child as an individual and to work to meet each of their needs. As their family, you know them better and differently than we do and the more effective the partnerships we build together, the more successful our work will be. Your child s classroom teachers, the two of us, and all other staff members are available to discuss questions, ideas, or concerns. us, call us, or stop by. There s a lot that s growing and changing about our. We re bigger! We opened in 2008 with 100 kindergarten and first grade students and 18 staff members and we ve grown into a of 300 students from kindergarten through fifth grade and 44 staff members. Our arts program has grown from visual arts and drama to include a full-time dance teacher, a rich drumming program, and a music teacher who will conduct formal instrumental lessons for the first time this year. Our arts staff is joined by a technology teacher and an activism teacher this year. The ways we meet individual students needs has evolved over the last four years. This year, we ll have a reading teacher, a math teacher, 2 literacy specialists, a math specialist, and a director of student support. We re more technologically advanced! This year, we re making it a priority to reach out to families in a variety of ways. Our phone-blast system will allow us to send out urgent bus messages, reminders about important meetings, and any emergency information. Mass will allow us to send you soft copies of our monthly letters as well as notices about upcoming events. Our website is maintained by our technology manager, Melvin Alvarez and has up-to-date classroom newsletters, calendars, and monthly letters from the two of us. Any communication or technology-related questions can be directed to Melvin. Our charter is up for renewal! The original charter agreement between BxC and the NYC Department of Education and the State Education Department describes the first 5 years of our. In the fifth year, our charter is up for renewal. The two of us spent much of the summer writing about the work of our first four years and outlining where we are headed in the future, including the addition of the middle grades. Over the course of the fall, representatives from the Department of Education will conduct a thorough review of the that will include: RANDOM PHONE CALLS TO FAMILIES to talk about your experience at BxC. You might receive a phone call from someone at the Department of Education with questions about BxC. The folks who are making the calls are involved in the decision-making process to approve the continuation of our. A two day visit to the which will include classroom observations and interviews with administration, teachers, and students. A public hearing at 6pm on October 17 th to record testimonies about BxC from families and community members. Attendance at a meeting of the BxC Board of Trustees. We will be sending home more information about the public hearing and encouraging you to attend. We re moving! The current estimate from our new landlord is that the building will be completed by the end of December and ready for us to move in February, after getting all the sign-offs. They are working hard to make it happen! Our BxC representative meets each week at the site to stay on top of the project and we have many reports of work happening on Saturdays and very early mornings. The Transition Committee of families and staff continued to meet over the summer and will meet each month until the move. If you re interested in joining this work, please let Sasha know. We are dismissing at 3:40 this year! Dismissal is at 3:40 Monday- Thursday and 2:00 on Fridays. Happy Year Five! Sincerely, Martha and Sasha

The first one will be on Friday September 21 st, at 9:30am, just after the Parade. The second will be at 6pm on Thursday, September 27 th. Both will be at the main site. New families should try to come to one session, and we welcome all families to come talk about the coming year. Lunch forms- Money for our from the federal government is determined by these lunch forms. It is ESSENTIAL that we receive one from every family as soon as possible. The lunch forms also determine eligibility for free or reduced priced lunch. Families who do not qualify for free lunch will receive a bill each month for the number of lunches their student ate. We will let you know whether you qualify for free, reduced, or full priced lunch as soon as possible. Breakfast is served each morning and is free for everyone. Communication- Your child has a plastic home- communication folder that will come home each day. Please establish a routine of checking this folder EVERY NIGHT. Any notes for staff should be sent to in this folder. Your child s teachers will send home a newsletter every two weeks with highlights from the past few weeks and important details about the upcoming weeks. Additionally, you will receive a monthly letter from Martha and Sasha along with a calendar. School Buses- Attached, you will find the most up-to-date bus schedule. The schedule will probably change a few times in the next weeks before it becomes permanent. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. 3 Staffing Update We re proud to say that every staff member is returning this year and a few of them are in newly created roles. DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SUPPORT: Jeannine King who has taught 2 nd and 3 rd grade here for the past 3 years will be taking on the new role of Director of Student Support. Her responsibilities include coordinating special education and supporting teachers and students around behavior management. She will be the main contact for families regarding both special education services and behavioral issues. As a certified special educator and veteran classroom teacher, Jeannine brings experience, expertise, and enthusiasm to her new role. She will work closely with Janice, our counselor, as well as the two of us. Sharing these aspects of our leadership work will make more room for us to concentrate on instructional leadership with classroom teachers as our grows. We re looking forward to her contribution to our leadership team. MATH TEACHER: Kim McLeveighn, who was a founding teacher at BxC, will be moving into the role of math teacher. She will join Kate Bishop, our reading teacher, to provide targeted pull-out and in-class instruction for students who need additional support to be working on grade level. Prior to her work at BxC, Kim was a resource room teacher for ten years, and is well-suited to her new role. ACTIVISM TEACHER: Maya Gat, who has taught here for the past 3 years, will be BxC s activism teacher, building on the substantial and impressive activism work she has coordinated for students each year. Last year, she facilitated the work of students in: organizing and running a blood drive, organizing and running a food collection for a local shelter, and traveling to Albany to meet with our local elected officials and advocate for our. We are the only with a dedicated activism teacher and it is an essential part of our mission to help students understand themselves as agents of change in their communities. This fall, she will support classroom teachers and work with small groups of students. In the spring, she will take on some whole-class teaching responsibilities. We look forward to the work Maya will pioneer at BxC. TECHNOLOGY TEACHER: Christy Crawford, who is new to BxC, will be our technology teacher. She will teach technology class to all BxC students at some point during the year, and will also do small-group tech projects. You will hear more about her technology curriculum when she is working with your child s class. We are also pleased to introduce seven new classroom teachers and welcome back Kendra Sibley, our visual arts teacher. We re attaching the organization chart so you can keep track of who s who. As always, staff members are available to you by or phone. We encourage you to reach out! (See organization chart for addresses.)
