1 the S P R I N G / S U M M E R HomeFront Elm City Communities/New Haven Housing Authority Elm City Communities/Housing Authority of the City of Haven (HANH) broke ground on a new $33 million, 77-unit mixed income development which began Phase 2 of the much anticipated West Rock Redevelopment at Rockview. Phase 1 of Rockview is scheduled to be completed by December 31, The revitalization of the West Rock Redevelopment at Rockview will include 195 units of low-income public housing. The West Rock Redevelopment also includes 122 Wilmont Road Development, Brookside Homeownership as well as Phase 1 and 2 of Brookside Estates, which had its ribbon cutting ceremony in June The groundbreaking was held on a beautiful spring day where spirits were high and excitement filled the air. Noted guests in attendance included Executive Director Karen DuBois-Walton, Ph.D, Mayor John DeStefano, Jr., Peter Wood, Vice President of Development-Michael s Development Corporation, Suzanne Piacentini, Field Office Director-U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Hartford Office, Eric Chatman, President and Executive Director Connecticut Housing Finance Agency, Nathan Karnes, Financial Project Manager Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development and Shirley Banks, Resident, Rockview Terrace. This year the City of New Haven celebrated its 375th birthday. Here at HANH/ECC, we celebrate our 75 th. As we consider these milestones, we notice how much has changed since our founding yet we remain true to our original purpose to be a welcoming home to all! This Spring/Summer edition of The Homefront celebrates the successes of our residents, partners and staff as we continue to create welcoming homes. We have been moving forward with the redevelopment of the West Rock community with the ribbon cutting held recently at Rockview Manor and celebrate our recent award of low income housing tax credits for the Farnam Courts and Ribicoff Cottages redevelopment efforts. As the school year ends, we celebrated our high school seniors who are graduating and we recognize one of our own who is completing her first year of college. As we begin to plan for summer, read about our summer employment opportunities for HANH/ECC youth and help us spread the word. There is always so much happening at Elm City Communities! 2 SPRING/SUMMER 2013 MTW Plan 2014 Elm City Communities has completed its MTW annual plan The new MTW plan proposed for the FY2014 includes streamlining of our rent simplification program, a self-certification program for our Housing Choice Voucher program (Section 8) and much more. Additionally, due to the significant decreases in federal funding to support housing authorities, ECC/HANH was forced to also outline in the plan difficult changes that we propose to make in the FY2014. ERIK CLEMONS With the departure of Reverend Turner who will be dearly missed, Elm City Communities announced that the Board of Commissioners will now be led by Mr. Erik Clemons. We also welcome Mr. Matthew Short and Mr. William Kilpatrick who also recently joined our board. We look forward to working with the Board in helping Elm City Communities/ HANH continue its mission to serve our residents and the community of New Haven. Elm City Communities participated in the 2 nd Parent University event on Saturday, April 6 th. Hundreds of parents showed up to participate and learn at one of the many workshops ranging in topics from Digital Literacy to Nutrition to Immigration. Many community organizations include Mom s Partnership, Junta, MADD and many more were on hand sharing their resources for the parents. Elm City Communities also provided one-on-one informational sessions about our application process and programs available. Parent University New Haven was a collaborative effort funded by the Board of Education, Promise, United Way and Boost! Plans are already underway for the next PU scheduled for Fall 2013! 2

This guide is a comprehensive listing of programs and activities available for New Haven youth- -activities range from mentoring programs, sports, music, sailing, academic support, SAT and college preparation. The Mayor s Summer Youth Guide is a tool to a summer of fun, learning and adventure. With this guide, we hope to make this summer the best ever for our city's youth. Inside you'll find a number of programs for children and youth of all ages, from preschool to young adults. Many of the programs in the guide are free to low-cost. There is also a convenient listing of dozens of sites across the City for the free summer meals program. The guide is available on the City of New Haven s website at If you need further information about youth programs in New Haven, please call the City's Youth Specialist at Sincerely, Mayor John DeStefano Jr. EARTH DAY 2013 At Elm City Communities, we recognize the importance of playing our part in helping to keep our environment safe. Here are some tips to stay green in your home:! Recycle everything possible. Glass, metal, plastic, paper, cardboard (don t forget junk mail!)! Use reusable plates, cups and utensils. And no styrofoam. Encourage others to do the same.! Use rechargeable and reusable office products, like batteries, pens, storage devices.! Filter your water rather than using bottled. Not only is it cheaper, but you reduce the bottles in circulation.! Donate used items rather than trashing them. Most places will even take worn clothes for rags! Unplug appliances when you're not using them 3

4 SPRING/SUMMER 2013 Elm City Communities is proud to feature Ms. Anabelle Marty in the Spring 2013 Resident Highlight section. Ms. Marty lives in Waverly Townhouses and is presently a freshman at Yale University. What has been your biggest success in your first year of college? Honestly, my biggest success this year has been simply getting through my freshman year of college. There were many challenges and "waves" that crashed-up against me, but still, I managed to not drown. In terms of my academics, having been "the top" student at my high school and then coming to college and realizing that I am not at "the top" was a challenge I simply had to accept. Despite that, another one of my successes has been not being ashamed or embarrassed to meet with my professors, signing-up for a tutor, and working on assignments with friends. What is your major? Every time someone asks me this question, I always feel my face scrunch-up as the words "I am still undecided" come out of my mouth quietly. It is interesting because many people assume that one must know their major before attending college. While I do not have a firm idea on what I want to major in, I have always been interested in the Social Sciences. Majors such as cultural anthropology, psychology, and education are a few of the ones that interest me the most! Do you go home often to visit your parents? What is a favorite meal that your mom prepares? I really want to experience life at college and I feel like going home on a regular basis may not allow me to fully immerse myself into the college life. One thing that my mom allows me to do at home is my laundry (which is so convenient!) When I do go home, my mom prepares meals I am used to her making, such as rice, beans, and chicken. However, since I don't eat her food regularly, when I do eat them, I savor them and enjoy them like never before! What advice would you give other young people about what they should do early to prepare for college? Some advice I can share with others about how to prepare for college early on is: you must, and will have to, make sacrifices. This may mean cutting-down on the amount of time you spend watching TV/playing video games. This may also mean sacrificing valuable time you can spend with family and friends in order to stay home and work on assignments (something I found I did a lot). Also, try to get involved in activities that you are truly passionate about. That can mean joining an athletic team, a choir, or even volunteering at a local soup kitchen. Do things that can make you "stand out" from simply being a student with good grades. Colleges want students that are full of interests, passions, and dreams-- not simply students who are solely focused on getting As for the rest of their lives. I know that some students may feel like college will never be a possibility for them, but it is. It all matters on how much you want to get there. 4

5 SPRING/SUMMER 2013 Elm City Communities Receives Tax Credit Award from the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority! Elm City Communities proudly acknowledges the work of its Special Projects department for being the recipients of the 9-percent tax credits awarded by the CHFA Connecticut Housing Finance Authority after completing a highly competitive application. The tax credits not only allow us to continue working on the various affordable housing development initiatives but also provide us an opportunity to create jobs and boost the local economy. Here is a breakdown of the awards received: The first site, Eastview Terrace Phase 2 will complete the redevelopment of Eastview Terrace, with 25 one- and two-story townhouses. The second site, 197 Chatham Street, involves demolishing an existing,environmentally- challenged commercial building, creating 38 units of new affordable housing, a community space and a small retail component in an existing residential neighborhood. Tax Credit Award: $1,616,367 (LIHTC Equity: $15,678,760) At The Ribicoff Cottages development, 100 obsolete public housing units will be demolished and replaced with 100 new mixed-income housing units in two phases. This nine percent phase includes 55 units, 34 units will be replacement housing for existing senior/disabled residents that will include supportive services. The majority of units will be targeted for households earning 60 percent or less of Area Median Income (AMI), with 11 units offering supportive services. Ribicoff Cottages will have 11 units offered at market rate rents. Tax Credit Awarded: $1,251,609 (LIHTC Equity: $12,265,765) (source: This summer we will be giving a group of our young residents between the ages of 16-21, an opportunity to complete a summer work experience at the Elm City Communities/HANH offices. For 6 weeks, each student will be immersed in a paid intense learning experience in one of our various departments from Operations to Finance. As part of the work experience, it will be mandatory for each student to participate in workshops that we will be providing ranging from financial literacy to resume writing. 6 SPRING/SUMMER 2013 On Thursday May 16 th, Elm City Communities proudly acknowledged our Class of 2013 graduating seniors with a recognition ceremony and reception during our monthly Board of Commissioners. Many students have already made plans to continue their studies and will be attending University of Bridgeport, Gateway, SCSU, Lincoln College and many more! Over 30 students were presented with a certificate and Kindle Fire tablet by our Executive Director Karen DuBois-Walton. Congratulations to all! 6

13 PRIMAVERA / VERANO 2013 Elm City Communities se enorgullece de presentar a Anabelle Marty en nuestra seccion de Resident Highlight Annabelle vive en Waverly Townhouses y actualmente es una estudiante de primer año en la Universidad de Yale. Cuál ha sido tu mayor éxito en su primer año de universidad? Honestamente, mi mayor éxito este año ha sido simplemente conseguir a través de mi primer año de universidad. Hubo muchos desafíos y "olas" que se estrelló en marcha contra mí, pero aún así, me las arreglé para no ahogarse. En cuanto a mis estudios, después de haber sido "la cima" estudiante de mi escuela secundaria y luego ir a la universidad y darse cuenta de que no estoy en "la cima" era un reto que simplemente tenía que aceptar. A pesar de ello, otro de mis éxitos no se ha de avergonzarse o vergüenza de encontrarme con mis profesores, la firma-para arriba para un tutor, y trabajar en las tareas con los amigos. Cuál es tu especialidad? Cada vez que alguien me hace esta pregunta, siempre me siento mi cara crujido-como las palabras "soy todavía indecisos" salir de mi boca en silencio. Es interesante porque mucha gente supone que uno debe conocer su importante antes de asistir a la universidad. Si bien no tengo una idea clara de lo que quiero importante, yo siempre he estado interesado en las ciencias sociales. Majors, como la antropología cultural, la psicología y la educación son algunos de los que más me interés! Visitas con frecuencia a sus padres? Qué es una comida favorita que su madre prepara? Tengo muchas ganas de experimentar la vida en la universidad y me siento como ir a casa de manera regular no puede permitir que me sumerjo completamente a mí mismo en la vida universitaria. Una de las cosas que mi mamá me permite hacer en casa es mi ropa (que es muy práctico!) Cuando me voy a casa, mi mamá prepara la comida que estoy acostumbrado a ella decisiones, como el arroz, frijoles y pollo. Sin embargo, como no comer la comida regular, cuando lo hago comer, saboreo ellos y disfruto como nunca antes! Qué consejo le daría a otros jóvenes acerca de lo que deben hacer pronto para prepararse para la universidad? Un consejo que puedo compartir con otros acerca de cómo prepararse para la universidad desde el principio es el siguiente: es necesario, y tendrá que, hacer sacrificios. Esto puede significar la corte-en la cantidad de tiempo que pasa viendo la televisión / videojuegos. Esto también puede significar sacrificar tiempo valioso que puede pasar con la familia y amigos con el fin de quedarse en casa y trabajar en tareas (algo que me di cuenta de que hice un montón). Además, trate de involucrarse en actividades que usted es realmente un apasionado. Eso puede significar unirse a un equipo deportivo, un coro, o incluso como voluntario en un comedor de beneficencia local. Haga cosas que le pueden hacer "destacar" de ser simplemente un estudiante con buenas notas. Las universidades quieren estudiantes que están llenos de intereses, pasiones y sueños - no simplemente estudiantes que se centran exclusivamente en conseguir cuanto al resto de sus vidas.
