González Ríos Disfruto mucho la lectura de espacios de Facebook como Robos en Isabela, Basta Ya Isabela, Tu Sabes que eres de Isabela, Royal Isabela, Corporación Mabodamaca, De Guajataca a los Cedros, Ciudadano Comprometidos con la Playa del Pastillo, Para Vivir Mejor en Isabela, No eres de Isabela si, Amigos del Tren, Peña del Tango, Rescate Playas de Isabela, Municipio de Isabela, la página del señor Alcalde y por supuesto mis cuatro páginas: la mía personal, la del Sol de Isabela, Ruta Gastronómica de Aguada... y Estudio Legal Gonzalez-Ríos, entre otras muchas Todas las leo y sin duda alguna creo que son bastante imparciales y buscan mejorar la calidad de vida de los residentes de Isabela y contrario a lo que muchos vociferan, son residentes y no isabelinos ya que los hay de todos los pueblos de la isla, y los hay cubanos, dominicanos, venezolanos, americanos, colombianos y hasta alemanes, entre muchos otros. Aclarado lo anterior, de una lectura de todas estas direcciones electrónicas puedo deducir los problemas que aquejan a nuestros residentes. Sin lugar a dudas el problema que mas tención requiere es el de la criminalidad. Puedo hablar del trabajo que hace la Policía Estatal, capitaneados por el Oficial González. Hay conformidad con el trabajo que hacen los oficiales de Isabela, están motivados y han reducido la incidencia criminal. Sin embargo, reconozco que aun con el entusiasmo y acción desplegada por los ofíciales estatales, no es suficiente. No es suficiente por culpa de ellos, sino por falta de mas agentes y de equipo aunque reconozco que en actividades como las del 4 de julio se reforzaron con agentes ajenos a Isabela que controlaron el tránsito en Jobos. Fueron tan inflexibles que ni a mí que vivo en la Car. 466 a la altura de Casita Tropical no me dejaron pasar para mi casa a escaso un kilometro de ese lugar. Gajes del oficio Luego del problema de la criminalidad, el próximo lo es el de tema de falta de trabajo, situación que se agravara cuando a finales de este año se mude a Aguadilla, la fábrica de Infotech con alrededor de 500 empleo menos y desconocemos de cuántos residentes también. Si el señor Alcalde no atrae nuevas industrias y el Gobierno Central tampoco le ayuda, el desempleo empeorará a su vez la situación de criminalidad. Esto en acción cascada generará la fuga de residentes de Isabela, falta de ingreso y deterioro de residencias, negocios y casco urbano. La tercera preocupación que expresan nuestros residentes, es la proliferación de estructuras abandonadas en el casco urbano y barrios. Ese abandono trae plagas y promueve la creación de hospitalillos en un pueblo en el que cada día florecen mas puntos de drogas. La Avenida Ashford en Condado, San Juan ha sido una de las avenidas que más ha sufrido los embates de la crisis. Pero han instalado unos paños monumentales con los que tapan esos locales en deterioro y en esos paños se anuncian negocios. O sea se matan dos pájaros de un tiro. Esa es una alternativa que nuestro Alcalde puede auscultar pero no sin antes requerirles a los propietarios de los locales responsabilidad por el mantenimiento y limpieza del mismo, cosa que no se ha hecho. Y si lo han hecho, no han sido efectivos en imponer multas por la dejadez. Señor Alcalde llueve quejas de múltiples residentes de la falta de acción de parte de las autoridades municipales. Ejemplo de esto fue la situación de la casa de la familia Pino que el propio Municipio adquirió para hacer un Museo y que constituía un estorbo público y hospitalillo de droga adictos. Hay que hacer algo y el Municipio tiene la primera palabra ECONOTICIAS Por: Lcda. Aura L. González Mucho se ha hablado de lo que será la última etapa [ al fin!] del paseo Costero de Isabela, que culminará con el desarrollo de la Finca Goetz o lo que se conoce como Playa Jobos. El amigo Héctor [Tito] Varela, ambientalista isabelino probado y que forma parte del Comité organizador seleccionado por el Señor Alcalde de Isabela, nos ha mantenido informados a través de su página de Facebook. Estoy esperanzada en que la última etapa de este proyecto que ha durado más de dos cuatrienios, conllevará el remozamiento de lugares aledaños a la Playa de Jobos, limpieza y paisajismo apropiado y exigencia de limpieza a comercios del entorno. El señor Alcalde debe considerar incentivos a los comercios para que pinten en colores vivos y tropicales sus locales. De igual forma estoy confiada en que creará un Grupo o Cuerpo de Vigilantes Municipal para esa playa que con suficiente adiestramiento comience a expedir boletos a quienes no [cont. pág. 4] WEB: info@soldeisabela.com Tel (787) AM Tel (787) PM Pág. 3

4 ECONOTICIAS [cont. pág. 3] Miren lo que delante de todas las autoridades estatales y municipales se hizo en la Car. 466 a pocos pasos de la entrada al balneario de jobos. Esas situaciones son imperdonables cumplan con el Código de Orden Publicó del área que se a p r u e b e. E s t a r e m o s pendientes del desarrollo de ese lugar emblemático de nuestro pueblo y estamos confiados en el resultado de la participación de Tito quien nos ha demostrado ser un joven consciente de lo que es el ambiente. Sin embargo Resulta bochornoso el crimen ambiental que en un día feriado -21 de julio- alguien con o sin los permisos adecuados pasó un B u l l d o z e r llevándose palmas y árboles adultos, so color de limpiar un solar privado, para no sabemos qué fines. Peor aun fue el hecho de que llamé al DRNA [otros vecinos también lo hicieron] e inclusive al Ing. Ricky Méndez del Municipio y no l o g r a m o s comunicación para que tomaran cartas en el asunto. Rescate de Playas de Isabela? Ni una nota en Facebook de ese asunto. Son muchos los que dicen preocuparse del ambiente, pero pocos los que se quejan y presentan querellas y en esos incluyo al Municipio quien tiene un deber ministerial de preservar el ambiente de nuestro pueblo y asegurarse de que las personas cumplan con las leyes y sus ordenanzas. No es solo recoger basura sino estar vigilantes de todo lo que pasa en nuestro municipio RINCÓN DEL VIAJERO DAMARIS TRAVEL Por: Damaris Rosa LAS VEGAS parte II En la pasada edición de El Sol de Isabela comenzamos una serie de artículos relacionados a los viajes a Las Vegas. Éste mes continuamos nuestro recorrido por ésta excitante ciudad comenzando por uno de sus mayores atractivos, sus hoteles, con sus clubes nocturnos, restaurantes, bares y, por supuesto, sus casinos, los que comentaremos más adelante. THE STRIP, como se le conoce a Las Vegas Boulevard, es la principal vía. Tiene poco más de cuatro millas de largo y agrupa más de 62,000 habitaciones, siendo uno de los más grandes el MGM GRAND RESORT AND CASINO con casi 7 mil, y es donde ocurre la mayoría de las carteleras boxísticas. Éstos, en su mayoría, son temáticos. Los hay circenses, como el CIRCUS CIRCUS, de Egipto, como el LUXOR (aunque están actualizando su decoración para hacerlo más moderno y atractivo para familias), PARIS (con Torre de Eiffel incluida), VENICE (con tó y canales con góndolas). El BELLAGIO está localizado en la parte central del Strip. Es un resort bellísimo y muy elegante. En él podrás disfrutar del Conservatorio y Jardín Botánico que cambia su decoración, al menos, cinco veces al año y refleja las diferentes estaciones y el Año Nuevo chino. Las Fuentes Danzantes son otro de sus atractivos más populares. El lago artificial donde se encuentran simula el Lago Como en Italia y cubre cerca de 8 acres. Aquí, puedes cenar al fresco, con vista al lago, en OLIVES o YELLOWTAIL, entre otros. El MANDALAY BAY es un hotel imponente que, entre otros atractivos, tiene una playa con arena, olas y cabañas En el CAESARS PALACE podrás disfrutar de la voz de Celine Dion, Elton John, entre otros. 5 RINCÓN DEL VIAJERO [cont. de pág. 4] EN CITY CENTER, la más reciente construcción en el Strip, se encuentran el ARIA, VDARA, MANDARIN ORIENTAL y VEER. Propiedades lujosísimas, de estilo ultra moderno. Los primeros son resorts y, aunque el Mandarin Oriental además de habitaciones de hotel contiene residencias, es Veer quien es totalmente de viviendas..baratitas ellas. Algo interesante es que el Vdara no tiene casino ni se permite fumar. Es un hotel eco-amigable y sofisticado. Fuera del Strip, hay otros hoteles que son muy visitados en Las Vegas. El PALMS, que es el hogar del Playboy Club y el hotel RÍO, el de los famosos Chippendales. El M RESORT es una propiedad al sur de la ciudad y fue planificada más para los locales. En Las Vegas hay hoteles para todo tipo de visitante. Elegantes, casuales, económicos. No importa cuál escojas, siempre tendrás la ciudad para disfrutar a plenitud tus vacaciones. Continuaremos.. Pepe López Comienzo este artículo de mis memorias deportivas [sin computadora], a pulmón, experiencia, recuerdos vividos y hechos comprobables. A mi entender enumero los máximos exponentes del Deporte del Baloncesto en Isabela. El número un [1] y pueden diferir y eso es aceptable. Muchos compueblanos tienen sus listitas. En Pepe Lópe z este listado que ofrezco es por el talento de estos compueblanos, no pensando en posiciones sociales, raza, color, religo, familiaridad, simpatías personales, ni lamer ojos. Solo talento. He aquí mis mejores de 1945 a La lista la encabeza Luis Bonilla y siguen en orden, Willie Guevara, Popo Banuchi, Totó Lamela, Botones Ríos, Rafy Rafols, Roddy Mercado, Radaí Mendoza, Víctor Machado, Tito Santiago, Johnny Ramos Geny [no quiso jugar Superior pero talento demás tenia], Pedro Ramos, Luis Cabán, Germán Hau, Wito Corchado y Baty Bernal. Estos fueron mi equipo de Estrellas Isabelinas. Para completar este trabuco selecciono a: Radai Mendoza como Apoderado, Güangui Juarbe Coapoderado, Dirigente Pancho Hernández, Asistente Orlando Irizarry. Ante ustedes mi All Stars. Se ha hablado también en círculos deportistas de los astros del Beisbol. Tengo mi equipo, pero por ahora voy con los mejores Lanzadores: Papy Vega, Judío González [me enseñó a lanzar], Orlando López, Rafy Chaves, Angelo Rodríguez, Eddie Durán, Cesar Barada, Víctor Ocasio, Domingo Pérez, Quique Abréu, Roberto Deliz, Ariel Vargas con Carlos Padín de Receptor. No dejo pasar esta oportunidad que mi editora me concede, la licenciada Aura González para mencionar los patriarcas que económicamente han cooperado para el sustento y crecimiento del Deporte de Isabela. Héroes ya olvidados como Luciano Chanin García, Frasco Guevara, Cano San Antonio, Sixto Mercado, Pablo Pérez, Isaac Calero, Manuel Bonilla [en publicidad], Germán Hernández, Chivo Gonzalez y los actuales propulsores como lo son Flichi,el número 1, [no lo conozco pero basta sus gestos pro deportes], Güangui Juarbe, Adán y Mina Juarbe, Raúl Valle [el Zapatero], la Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito de Isabela, Luis A Abréu, Dr. Girald, entre otros. Exhortación: Cooperen con los Honestos, pero velen a los Buscones, que hay algunos. De otro lado y volviendo a las noticias actuales, por segunda ocasión en la Barriada Corchado, los amigos de lo ajeno, dejan los parques de pequeñas ligas, sin luz. Estos ladrones se han llevado los cables soterraos de cobre con un valor de $20,000. Parques sin alumbrado, es el resultado. Lo hacen de noche y nadie ve nada. 6 LA VERDAD DEL DEPORTE EN ISABELA [cont. pág. 5] sugiero se instale un letrero que diga Zona de Peligro, porque no es solo cobre lo que se roban, sino guantes, bates, pelotas, equipo de beisbol como guantillas y otros accesorios. Se sabe de uno, pero..en el Parque grande Chatarra, inservible se llevaban cuanto equipo dejaban olvidados allí y ahora es en los del Parque de Pequeñas Ligas. Ah! A un empleado del DRD, humilde y trabajador, se le ocurrió la idea de cómo evitar, el robo de miles de dólares en cobre en estos Parques, que se repiten. Su nombre: Rafy Acevedo. Sugiere Rafy, que esos alumbrados se instalen aéreos y así es imposible robárselos. Brillante idea que le economiza miles y miles de dólares a la administración municipal. Al momento por tratarse de un humilde empleado no se le ha hecho caso. Brillante idea Rafy. Ahora Acción! Finalmente, tristeza hay en Isabela con los fallecimientos de dos familias queridas, respetadas y deportivas que se nos fueron para el mas allá. Dieron mucho por este pueblo y se encuentren en el cielo. Son ellos: el licenciado Luis González Valle y su esposa la licenciada Lydia Ríos; el otro fue Germán Hernández, miembro del Comité de los Once y venerado deportista. Consuelo y fortaleza a sus familiares tanto a la licenciada Aura González y su hermana la licenciada Betsy González y a Elsie, Annette y Germancito Hernández. Dios les acompañé Celebraciones a la Virgen del Carmen en nuestro entorno La Virgen del Carmen, Patrona de la Marina Española, Virgen de puerto o costa venerada por marinos y pescadores, fue celebrada en muchos pueblos costeros del archipiélago puertorriqueño. Isabela y Aguadilla, no fueron sus excepciones. La imagen en ambos pueblos, es llevada en procesión por la bahía. En el caso de Aguadilla y por la Villa Pesquera en el caso de Isabela. En el caso de esta Aguadilla este ano vimos como cientos de pescadores en sus yolas y lanchas la acompañan por la bahía, tirándole flores a su paso por las picadas aguas. Canciones alusivas a la Virgen y cohetes le daban vida a la festividad. CIUDADANA MOLESTA CON LA DEJADEZ EN NUESTRO PUEBLO: Con la alerta del "chikingunya", no veo que hagan algo con tantas casas abandonadas y cubiertas de basura y matojos hasta el techo. El alcalde debe comenzar a autorizar ordenes de denuncias contra estas personas y bancos que sin ninguna consideración hacia los vecinos y hacia el pueblo, mantienen estas propiedades en deterioro, además del detrimento a la salud que esto acarrea. Tienen que tirar gente a la calle y anotar direcciones y dueños de estas propiedades para comenzar a crear conciencia sobre este mal que "padece" mucha gente e instituciones, para erradicarlo de raíz y de esta manera gozar de una buena salud y tener un pueblo limpio y hermoso con habitantes que manifiesten estas características, aunque sea porque se les va a denunciar sino lo hacen...ciudadana preocupada por su pueblo y la actitud de su gente. 11 ENGLISH SECTION ISABELA Isabela, the western -most town on the north coast, has a bundle of places and beaches to visit, surfing, a forest reserve, caves, lakes, rivers and historical sites, are a few to mention. There s a small bathing resort known as Guajataca. On Route 113, you will find also El Pastillo, Villa Pesquera and Sardinera beach. El Pastillo is the first beach to your right side of the road, small bath and is part of a new golf resort, called Royal Isabela which is the best and biggest of the Caribbean. You won t find many signs that show you which route to take; so feel free to ask neighbors. Worth to try the food at the Restaurant at Royal Isabela. Once in downtown, near the Plaza, take a right to Rd. 466, and go straight to Bajuras Ward. Almost at the end of the Road is a big complex called Isabela Beach Court. Take the road to your right where you will find a small fishing village, Villa Pesquera and the Sardinera Beach. Villa Pesquera is a small bunch of nice-looking kiosks, where you can get some good, reasonably-priced local food, drinks and just enjoy the area. During the week you can find some action but when it turns quite interesting is during Friday and Saturdays nights and Sunday afternoons. There is live music, cheap food and drinks, motorcycles and locals. There are also food kiosks and a small fish market where you ll find the catch of the day and lobsters. Sardinera beach is a small beach suitable for swimming, especially for children, because it is protected from most of the rough waves. The sand sometimes has trash. Going thru Rd. 466, along the Paseo Lineal, with a sign that shows the unpaved entrance, the next beach is Poza de Teodoro. This is a relative small swimming hole, protected from the pounding ocean waves and visited for local s family gatherings. Avoid it during long weekend, lots of four tracks, people, noise and trash. It is beautiful and you may have a great time if you visit it during the week or normal weekends. On your way to Montones beach, you can find Middles beach, famous for the worldwide surfing competitions sponsored by the Tourism Company and other private entities. Montones [the rock] is great for swimming as well as snorkeling, but you should be careful for its underwater currents. In Montones you will find Villas del Mar Hau Guest House with its beautiful beach cottages. This guest house is part of the Paradores de Puerto Rico and it is affordable, clean and a great family resort. Great sunset views from the rock. Continuing the same road, next is Jobos Beach, great for surfing but as Montones you will have to very careful because of the dangerous underwater currents. There are some private parking lots [recommended] for an affordable fee during long weekends and summer. Otherwise you have to park in the street. If that s the case, don t leave valuables in your vehicle. Next to Jobos beach is the Pozo de Jacinto, a dangerous but beautiful blow hole worth seeing. Out of Jobos and into Rd 466, continue straight ahead until a curve with a sign of Villa Montaña resort; make a right and continue thru the Road. Park in the street and walk to your right where you will find Shacks beach [el Baño de los Bravo]. There is no parking, no signals except for some sign of Villa Montaña s Resort and of Ola Lola, a local bar. Be careful where you park and again, no valuables in your vehicle. If you are planning to snorkel try it safely; if scuba, go to one of the local experts. This is the most spectacular beach to snorkel. 12 RESTAURANTS There is a great variety of restaurants in and around Isabela: Puerto Rican, seafood, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Mexican and international cuisine. Remember: eating and drinking water in Puerto Rico is safe. Fast foods: Mc D, BKg, KFC, Taco Maker, Wendy s, Subway. Most of them in Rd. No. 2 near Isabela Mall Puerto Rican cuisine: Las 3 F s of Piro and Patria; Lechonera of Onix; El Timbiriche of Daly; and Pastelillos [turnovers] joints in Jobos and Estación Avenue in town. Tapas and drinks: Villa Pesquera is the cheapest Asian Restaurants: Pedro s Sushi in Rd Take out and open gazebo, Fridays and Saturdays One Ten Thai in Rd.110 in Aguadilla, noons from Wednesday thru Sunday Golden Crown; The best Chinese food Road 110 Italian/Pizza: Some of them along Rd. 110 in Aguadilla; brick oven in the Cheesecake Shop in Rd. No. 2 and also check Pellot Pizzas in 3 different locations in Aguadilla, my favorite near gate 1 at Ramey; Wilnelly s, Pizza 2 Go in downtown Isabela and Brendy s Pizza in Jobos. Almost all of them make deliveries. With help from ENERGY STAR you can keep your cool, tame those bills, and help fight climate change. The secret is to keep your cooling system from working too hard. Keep the heat out Take advantage of shades, blinds, curtains, awnings and even trees to keep the sun out during the day, especially on the south and west side of your house. If you are upgrading your windows, consider ENERGY STAR certified windows, which will keep even more heat out. Find and seal leaks (the biggest ones are in your attic and basement) this will also help reduce humidity and keep out pests and pollen. Consider adding attic insulation so less heat radiates down into your house from your hot attic. Sealing air leaks and improving your homes insulation could save you up to $200 a year in cooling/heating costs (or about 10 percent of your annual energy bill). Finally, if you re replacing your roof, you can reduce the effects of the hot sun by installing ENERGY STAR certified roof products. 2. Keep the cool in You re paying for your AC s cool air, so don t let it leak out of your ducts before it gets to the vent and the rooms you want to cool. That s YOUR air! In most homes, 25 percent of air that flows through air conditioning ducts leaks out before it gets to you. So get a contractor to test your ducts, seal them, and insulate them so you re not paying for cool air you don t get to use. Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of an HVAC system by as much as 20 percent. 3. Maintain Your Cooling System A simple tune up of your HVAC equipment can do wonders. Make sure you also change your air filter regularly EPA recommends every three months at a minimum. And, if you do not have a programmable thermostat install one and program it around your family s summer schedule. Setting the thermostat up by seven degrees when you re away from home and up by four degrees when you re asleep can save more than $180 a year. 4. Look for the ENERGY STAR If your central air conditioning unit is more than 12 years old, replacing it with an ENERGY STAR certified model could cut your cooling costs by 30 percent. In the market for a new room air conditioner? Find one that has earned the ENERGY STAR and use about 15 percent less energy. ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifiers also use 15 percent less energy than a conventional unit. A: How top officials at the food giants don't eat their own products. Or they stop eating them when they face their own personal health crisis. I came across this early in my reporting, so I started to ask everyone I met and interviewed about their own diets. Frito-Lay's top scientist abstained from chips, kind of willing himself to resist the great salty taste. And the former president of Coca-Cola deployed a whole health regime for his own personal life, from yoga to fresh carrots as snacks which he also began marketing to make up for all the years he spent pushing sodas on kids. Q: What should readers do with all this evidence that the food industry manipulates us into unhealthy eating? A: Good ideas include spending more time on the outer aisles of the grocery store, where the fruits and vegetables are placed, and being on red alert in the middle aisles especially [products] at eye level because that's where they put the items with the biggest levels of salt, sugar and fat. As powerful as the food giants are, ultimately it's we who choose what to buy, and how often, and that's a really powerful thing. Q: How did we end up with so much salt in our processed foods? A: I was surprised to learn that we aren't born liking salt that comes when we're maybe 6 months old. And our liking for salt appears to be hugely influenced by the food industry, which is totally hooked on it as a cheap, sort of miracle additive that lets them avoid more costly ingredients like fresh herbs and spices. That's why three-quarters of our salt comes from processed foods, not the salt shaker, and why the industry has refused to cut back on it. Q: What do you say to people who don't want to give up the convenience of processed foods, where you find the most salt, sugar and fat? A: There have been some studies that show that "convenience" foods are not the time savers that people think they are. You can make food a slightly bigger part of your life and it will have a huge effect on your health. So instead of trying to save five minutes of your cooking time, cut five minutes out of another activity and I think the results could be remarkable. Q: What product did you find to be the most egregious example of a bad-for-you processed food? A: I have to say that the perfectly addictive food is the potato chip. They're salty, which hits your tongue immediately with this great rush to the brain, and they're loaded with saturated fat or many of them are which your brain also craves for energy. But the surprising thing about chips is that they're also loaded with sugar, not because of anything added but because of the kind of carbohydrate that they have that instantly turns to sugar in your body. You're getting all three of those [ingredients] with each chip which is certainly why I love potato chips, and why Frito-Lay coined the [slogan] "Bet you can't eat just one." That may not be the most evil food, but it's certainly the most seductive. Q: Do you find that you've stopped eating potato chips since working on the book? A: No! [Laughs.] Not at all! I mean, I'm not anti-junk food. It's about being careful, and knowing all that the food giants do that could compel you to overindulge and overeat.
