7 Making the Best of Middle School

8 Ponce de Leon Middle is a safe, family oriented school. Our staff is trained in helping our incoming students and their parents make the most of their middle school experience. Every student at Ponce has a counselor, administrator and team of teachers assigned to them. Together, we help to make Ponce an unforgettable and positive experience. Here are tips to help you get ready:

9 1. Leave your book bag and uniform ready the night before. 2. Keep all important events (school and family life) in your agenda. 3. Do your homework the evening that is first assigned. Waiting creates stress for you and your family. 4. Have phone numbers from at least one student in every class. This will be helpful when you are absent or need help with a homework assignment. 5. Smile, say please and thank you to your classmates and school staff. Everyone is nicer when you have a positive attitude.

10 6. Join at least one extra school activity. 7. You have professional and friendly teachers, ask them for directions on how to get to your next class. Ask your teacher for extra help if you did not understand an assignment. 8. You are a strong, smart student, if you have an issue or concern, ask for help. 9. Be helpful to other students and your teachers, they are also stressed and scared to be in a new school. 10. Be proud, you are lucky to attend the BEST middle school.

26 YOU CANNOT LEARN IF YOU ARE NOT HERE!

27 Procedures for reporting absences: Must bring a written note for every absence within 3 days return to school. All absences will be reported as unexcused until appropriate documentation is submitted to the attendance clerk. Absences for 5 or more consecutive days require a health provider s note. If absence is due to a medical appointment, written statement with time and date of appointment is required from the health care provider.

28 Attendance Review Committee Grades and credits will be withheld for excessive unexcused absences, that is, five (5) or more absences in a semester course and/or ten (10) absences in an annual course, pending action taken by each school's respective Attendance Review Committee. Provide early intervention by convening with students and parents when students reach an accumulation of five (5) unexcused absences in a semester or ten (10) unexcused absences in an annual course. Excessive absences can be a cause for course failure.

29 Community Health of South Florida

30 Clinic Information Community Health of South Florida, through a grant, provides a nurse everyday to service our students. The nurse can provide basic healthcare. Should a student feel ill during the school day or need to take medication on a daily basis, he/she should report to the clinic, room 110. Students will be allowed to call home and a parent/guardian can then come pick up the child. For safety reasons, students will only be released to people whose names are listed on the emergency contact card. If your child takes medication on a daily basis, you will need to provide the school with a properly labeled medication bottle along with specific instructions for how to administer the medication. You must also provide the school with a medical authorization letter. This letter is available from the clinic in room 110, and requires signatures from both the parent and the doctor. No medication will be administered until all information has been provided. Students are NOT allowed to carry medication and administer it to themselves, including aspirin, Tylenol, or cold medicine. It is vital that parents/guardians provide the school with updated emergency contact information. Please update your address and phone number with us if you move or if your phone number changes. Furthermore, it is extremely important that you list ALL people who are authorized to pick up your child if you are unavailable in case of emergency. Accidents do happen, and students do sometimes feel ill during the school day; therefore, it is imperative that we are able to reach you or a designated person who you authorize to pick up your child. No student will be released to any relative or family friend unless his/her name and phone number are listed on the emergency contact card.

Si la ausencia se debe a cita médica, también tienen que traer nota personal, indicando el día y hora de la cita médica.
