3 RESULTS OBTAINED: For each specific goal, describe or summarize the results obtained. Relate each one to work already published and/or manuscripts submitted. In the Annex section include additional information deemed pertinent and relevant to the evaluation process. The maximum Iength for this section is 5 pages. (Anal or Verdana, font size 10). (Objective 1) Median path and related networks: We proposed and solved, for the first time, the problem of the p-median with an associated network, which we call the p-median with construction costs or p-cable-trench problem. A model was formulated and two Lagrangean Relaxation-based heuristics proposed for its solution. We presented the problem at two conferences [14, 16], and an ISI paper [7] is being submitted soon (it is being transiated and finished). On the p-median path problern, we are working on a branch and cut technique, for which we found new cuts and are currently gathering sorne numerical experience. (Objective 2) Efficient techniques for bi-objective networks: Several techniques have been explored to solve this problem. Heuristics, Branch and Cut, exact methods and Branch and Price. We have several published papers on this subject [1, 5, 6] as well as accepted [8, 91, and also two doctoral Theses [19, 20], and conference papers [13, 15]. (Objective 3) Including the treatment of competition in networks: A very important type of network is the hub and spoke network, common in air!ine or distribution systems. We deal with hub networks for airlines or other passenger companies, when there is competition and passengers choose their airlines and flights by price and flight time, iii an ISI paper [3], and a conference paper [17] (Objective 4) Extensions: Wc addressed several possible extensions: A first paper was published on the design of electrical utility networks, when cost and reliability are objectives [4] and a MSc Thesis finished [21] (and a conference paper as well [18]). In the second place, we used two objectives (cost and satisfaction) to locate emp!oyees on a workspace, results of which are published in an ISI paper [2]; minimized congestion and travel cost, in the ISI paper [10], and optimized probabilistic networks through a heuristic in the ISI paper [11]. a MSc Thesis [22] and the conference paper [12]. The maximum Iength for this section s 1 page. (Anal or Verdana, font size 10). Many systems can be modeled as networks, and designed so to optimize twa objectives. Transportation, teiecommunications, and electrical power networks are typicaliy composed by different level sub-networks, each one possibly having different cost structures, properties, functionalities and ownership. During the design process of these networks, both leveis rnust be optirnized, which results in the minimization of twa different cost objectives, frequently conflicting. Ather example of bi-objective network s a distribution system that has to deliver goods to a set of customers, and can choose to deviate from their route and pickup items from other custorners, when it is profitable. Costs need to be minimized and profits maximized. We focus on the optimal design of these bi-objective networks. We proposed and solved, for the first time, the problem of the p-median with an associated network, which we cali the p-median with construction costs or p-cable-trench problem. A Lagrangean approach shows good resuits, aithough embedding a better heuristic to find feasible solutions couid decrease the gap observed in the solutions. We aiso address the Hierarchical Network Design Problem. When the networks are large, the modeis required long solution times. Furthermore, when the networks are capacitated, the solution times get even longer, because in this case, exact forrnulations need unacceptable amounts of branching of the branch-and-bound algorithms. We have resuits for reasonabiy large-sized networks using exact heuristics; branch and cut; and iterative procedures, as well as using techniques that reduce the problems eugh to allow them to be solved with exact procedures. When soiving the Vehicle Routing Problem with Delivery and Optional Collection, since this problem is NP-complete, one of the difficulties is the tendency of the simple exact models to find solutions in which there are undesired sub-tours or cycles. We propase formulations and new cuts for a branch and cut procedure, and explore also a branch and price method, both highiy successful. Finaily, we applied sorne of the principies used to salve the problems described aboye, to two related problerns: in the first place, we salve the long terrn capacity planning problern of a large electrical utility, including optimal capacity and reactive location. In the second place, we address the problem of the carnpetitive network; specifically a hub and spoke network in which several airlines compete to rnaximize their market share, assuming that customers choose the airline they use each time.
