1 Monica Ward, Principal Patricia Rivera, Assistant Principal 1608 North Adams Telephone: (830) Fredericksburg, TX Fax: (830) FOURTH SIX WEEKS NEWSLETTER Principal s Desktop Report Monica Ward As the winter months wind down, teachers and students begin to turn their attention toward the upcoming state assessments. This year will mark the third year of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). Teachers and students have been preparing for the upcoming tests by focusing on the class content with an emphasis on the increased demands of the STAAR tests. Attached to your child s report card, you will find a copy of the State of Texas School Report Card for Fredericksburg Elementary School along with a letter explaining how to read this report. FES recently held a STAAR parent information night on February 13 th for our parents of 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade students. The purpose of this meeting was to provide parents with information that will assist them in helping their child to be successful. Your child s success and the overall success of FES can only be achieved when the parents and the school work in unity. We greatly appreciate the support you give the students and staff at FES. FES also recently held its first Bilingual Night on February 6 th. The turnout was great and parents had an opportunity to learn new academic activities to help their children at home. We look forward to making this a yearly event. It is that time again to begin planning for the school year. As in years past, you will be able to request teachers for your child. The option of requesting is available to you if you have someone in mind. Parents are in no way required to fill out a request form, but if you choose to you will need come by the school office and fill out a request form between May 1 st and May 31 st. Requests will only be accepted on the form provided from the FES office and only during the May 1 st through May 31 st time period. Each form will require the name of four teachers. Ranking of teachers as 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, and 4 th choices will not be used. If you place a request, following these guidelines, we will ensure your child is placed with one of your four requested teachers. Requests that your child be placed with another specific student will not be accepted, unless they are siblings. 2 Counselors Corner Doug DeBord, Kelli Rode-Counselors Sportsmanship not just for sports It s important to teach your child to be a good sport, but don t limit it to athletics. Good sportsmanship is also important in life. And you play a key role in helping build this respectful behavior at home so your child can be successful in school. To encourage sportsmanship on and off the field: o Emphasize respect for others family members at home and teachers, the principal and others at school. o Model the behavior you want to see from your child, such as praising a younger sibling for completing a difficult project. o Reinforce values such as integrity. Make it your family policy. o Teach your child to treat classmates and friends with kindness. o Remind your child to enjoy competitive activities and that it s not always important to win. Source: C. First through third graders will have a presentation of Aesop s Fables on that day, and fourth and fifth graders will hear a book read aloud by the mayor of Fredericksburg, Jeryl Hoover! PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO READ AND TAKE AN AR TEST ON THIS DAY! All students who pass an AR test on Celebrate Reading Day will receive a free Sweet Marley s frozen yogurt! Students have also been filling out I Love Reading book reports. Stop in the hallway behind the library to read what our students wrote about their favorite books!

9 Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Larry & Cori Boyd Our 4 th Six Weeks is upon us and we want to say a big Thank You to all of you who were able to help us over the past few weeks. We do know and understand not everyone can help due to other schedules. Picture Day at both campuses was awesome and went well. Yearbook order forms are due back at the end of February. Please order one for your child. It s a memory that will last for many years to come. Please, come and be with us on March 4 th for the next PTO meeting, 6:00 pm in the Fredericksburg Elementary School Cafeteria. Thank you all again! First Grade Fun Facts Chelcie Schroder, Teacher Wow! I can t believe February is now coming to a close and spring is in the air. As teachers, we are so proud of the academic gains we have seen thus far, and cannot wait to see what these next 12 weeks have in store for us! We are so excited about spring because it brings so many new learning opportunities! We are looking forward to studying Texas, the life cycle of a plant, oviparous animals, and we will even get to take our much anticipated field trip to the San Antonio Zoo! In math, we will be working on telling time to the hour and half hour on digital and analog clocks. We will also be learning all about temperature and adding and subtracting numbers up to 18. We still have so much to learn! As we approach the end of the year, please remember the importance of continuing to read with your child for at least 20 minutes each night! Most of us are working hard to meet our Accelerated Reader goals here at school, but your hard work at home truly makes a difference! Bring it on, 5 th six weeks! Second Grade Sentiments Trista Luciano, Teacher What an exciting six weeks for our second graders! We all had a great time during our Valentine s Day parties. Thanks so much to those parents who volunteered or participated in some way. We would also like to thank those who were able to attend Parent Night. We hope that the strategies that we showed you were something that you were able to take home and put into practice with your child. This six weeks in math, the students have been exploring the concepts of multiplication and division (just like big kids ). In science, we have been learning about the water cycle and also about phases of the moon/observing the sky. Many students have been working very hard on meeting their AR goals and will be rewarded at our next AR celebration. This is a very important time of year in the children s reading

10 development. Many of them are now reading at higher levels and are being challenged with chapter books; continuing to support them at home with reading practice and questioning is still very important. Other students may still be acquiring their foundation in reading; extra practice at home is crucial to their development and progress. The fifth six weeks period will be very busy for our second graders. In math, we will be studying number patterns and relationships, fractions and probability and linear measurement. During Social Studies and Science, the students will explore economics and learn about the characteristics of living organisms. In Language Arts, we will be working on research, as well as continuing our reading and comprehension practice. In addition to our new learning, second graders will be taking the ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) during the week of April Parents will be receiving more information later this six weeks about this testing. There are a few upcoming events that we would like to tell you about. The P.E. teachers will be holding Gym Dandies on Thursday, March 27 th. Spring Break is the week of March We hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing time. We want to thank you all again for continuing to work with your children at home to support the learning that is happening here at school. It truly makes a difference! Third Grade Thoughts Jodi Wilder, Teacher Wow, can you believe we are about to close the door on February and jump into spring? Your children are 12 weeks away from being fourth graders. The time sure flies by when you are working so hard. We all had fun at our Valentine s parties, and we were thankful for all the special gifts we received from the students. We continue to see gains in academic abilities, and we hope to see many more in the next 12 weeks. This time of year is so important for your child to have excellent attendance to make sure he or she is getting all the concepts that are being taught daily. We know doctors, dentist, and eye appointments are important, but please check with your teacher when scheduling them to make sure your child is not missing important information. Also, Texas weather is still very unpredictable, so please continue to send those jackets daily. As we enter the spring, there are a few dates to remember. Spring Break is right around the corner. We will have a whole week off on March th. I know the students are looking forward to this time of rest. Also, April 9 th is an early release day. Also, April 18 th (Good Friday) will be one of our Bad Weather Makeup Days. Please remember it is so important for you to read daily with your child. Also, basic math facts are so important to continue to have your child do each night. You might just be surprised at how fast they are able to answer them. Again, we are all looking forward to this spring, and we thank you for all the support you continue to give us. We are blessed to be able to teach your child. Fourth Grade Footnotes Julie Sifford, Teacher Welcome to all the excitement! Fourth grade continues to keep busy with all kinds of amazing subjects! We have been measuring in math. Students have become knowledgeable in both customary and metric measurement. We have measured to ¼ of an inch and estimated distance in kilograms. In addition to length we have estimated and measured weight (versus mass), area, perimeter, temperature, volume and capacity. Our rooms are all full of scales, thermometers, rulers, meter sticks, and containers. Students also must learn how to convert from one measurement to another. For example, a fourth grader is expected to figure out how many inches are in five yards or how many pints are in six gallons. Much of this is new to fourth graders which makes it a big step up from third grade. Students have to think what would be the most appropriate measurement for an object. This is a real world experience that students can practice at home. Have your child guess how much water is in a glass or a pitcher and then measure. Have your child guess the weight of an object and then weigh it. Have your child get a pound of

11 apples at the grocery store. Point out the measurements on canned goods or any other purchased good. These are quick simple activities that add up in the real world of math. Another part of measurement is the ability to tell time on a face clock. This skill is difficult to practice when we are surrounded with digital clocks. So, parents hide those digital clocks and pull out the analog (face) clocks. Students get better with practice. Students also need to know how much time has elapsed between events. This requires a major understanding of the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day. Let s not forget our reading! We should be reading our library books daily. In class we ve discussed topics such as fact and opinion, author s purpose, main idea, and the differences between fiction and nonfiction. Some of us prefer fiction books, while some prefer nonfiction books. Hey! Those are opinions! See how smart we are! We re spending a lot of our language arts time on writing. We re practicing revising and editing passages as well as writing compositions. As 4 th graders, we re introduced to both narrative and expository writing. The purpose of a personal narrative is to describe an important moment in a personal manner. Expository writing exposes information through informing, explaining, or defining. We are preparing for our STAAR writing test which will be on April 1 and April 2. Does it seem that your child is more interested in weather forecasts? We have learned about weather patterns in the United States and Texas, and we know that there are patterns in the water cycle, the seasons, shadows, and the moon s phases. In social studies we compared and contrasted important leaders of the Republic of Texas and learned that statehood brought many economic opportunities for Texans. We are starting our unit on the Civil War. As you can see, fourth grade has kept busy! Fifth Grade Feedback Danielle King & Jami Bell, Teachers Wow! February is almost over and we are working so hard to get ready for the STAAR tests which are coming in April. In all of our classrooms we have really buckled down and study some tough concepts. In math we have been studying all forms of measurement: length, capacity, weight, temperature and time. We have talked about both customary (inches, feet, yards, pounds, ounces, gallons) and metric (centimeters, liters, kilograms) units. Now is a great time to test your child s knowledge of these concepts by talking about capacity while shopping for milk at the grocery store or having them double a recipe when cooking at home. In science we studied the sun, moon and earth systems. We have had some fun acting like the earth revolving around the sun and the moon revolving around the earth as well as talking about the different phases of the moon. Now we are beginning to study life science by talking about ecosystems and habitats. As springtime approaches there are many opportunities to discuss the different life cycles that we see around us as well as talk about the water cycle when we get springtime rains. Language Arts has continued to progress through some pretty difficult concepts. We have read expository texts similar to articles that you would find in a magazine or newspaper like Ultimate Field Trip 5 and The Spirit of Endurance as well as science fiction stories like Zathura. Through these stories we have learned how to identify main idea and also draw conclusions or infer what we think the author might have been trying to communicate or what the characters might have been feeling. Also we have talked about how certain events in a story can foreshadow what might come next. In Social Studies we are pushing forward in our study of the history of the United States. We have studied how the pioneers crossed the Appalachians in search of more land, the expedition of Lewis and Clark after the country bought the huge piece of land known as Louisiana from France and how the country entered into war again with Great Britain in the War of All in all we are very busy in our classrooms. Please continue to check your child s homework and Billie Planner as we enter our last several weeks of school before the STAAR tests. Thank you so much for all you do!

20 Organización de Padre y Maestro/a (PTO) Larry y Cori Boyd Nuestro Cuarto Seis Semanas esta aqui y queremos decir "Gracias" a todos los que fueron capaces de ayudarnos en las últimas semanas. Sabemos y no entiendo que todo el mundo puede ayudar debido a otros calendarios. Dia de la foto en ambos planteles fue impresionante y salió bien. Pueden ordernar un Libro del Ano y regresar la forma el 28 de febrero. Por favor ordene uno para su niño. Es un recuerdo que durará por muchos. Por favor, están invitados a estar con nosotros el 4 de marzo para la próxima reunión de PTO, 6:00 en la cafetería de la Fredericksburg Elementary School. Gracias otra vez! Hechos Divertidos del Primer Grado Chelcie Schroder, Maestra Wow! No puedo creer que hayamos llegando al fin de febrero y la primavera está en el aire. Como docentes, nos sentimos tan orgullosos de los logros académicos que hemos visto hasta ahora y no puedo esperar a ver qué nos vamos a teneri estas próximas semanas 12! Estamos muy emocionados acerca de la primavera porque trae muchas nuevas oportunidades de aprendizaje. Estamos mirando adelante a esudiar Texas, el ciclo de vida de una planta, ovíparos, y ni siquiera nos pondremos a tomar nuestra esperada viaje de educaion al zoológico de San Antonio. En matemáticas, trabajaremos en saber la hora a la hora y media hora en los relojes digitales y analógicos. Estaremos también aprendiendo todo sobre temperatura y sumando y restando números hasta 18. Todavía tenemos mucho que aprender! Como nos acercamos al final del año, por favor, recuerde la importancia de continuar a leer con su hijo durante al menos 20 minutos cada noche. La mayoría de nosotros estmos trabajando duro para alcanzar nuestras metas de Accelerated Reader aquí en la escuela, pero su trabajo en casa realmente hace una diferencia! Adelante, 5th seis semanas! Sentimientos de Segundo Grado Trista Luciano, Maestra Qué un emocionante seis semanas para nuestros alumnos de segundo grado! Todos tuvimos un gran tiempo durante las fiestas del día de San Valentín. Muchas gracias a aquellos padres que se ofrecieron o participaron de alguna manera. También nos gustaría dar las gracias a todos que pudieron asistir a la noche de padres. Esperamos que las estrategias que mostramos eran algo que eran capaz de llevar a casa y poner en práctica con su hijo. Estas seis semanas en matemáticas, los estudiantes han estado explorando los conceptos de multiplicación y división (como "niños grandes"). En la ciencia, hemos estado aprendiendo sobre el ciclo del agua y también sobre las fases de la luna/observar el cielo. Muchos estudiantes han estado trabajando muy duro para alcanzar sus objetivos de AR y serán recompensados en nuestra próxima celebración de AR. Este es un momento muy importante del año en el desarrollo de lectura de los niños. Muchos de ellos ahora están leyendo en los niveles superiores y están siendo desafiadas con libros de capítulos;
