1 In this chapter you will learn to do the following: 1. identify and describe school supplies 2. identify and describe articles of clothing 3. shop for school supplies and clothing 4. state color and size preferences 5. speak to people formally and informally 6. discuss differences between schools in the United States and in Spanish-speaking countries EL VOCABULARIO Study vocabulary lists for Palabras 1 and Palabras 2. Know the meanings for and the spelling of all words. Know the dialogue sequences below. PALABRAS 1: EN LA PAPELERÍA (In the stationery store) Julio necesita materiales escolares = Julio needs school supplies Busca un cuaderno en la papelería. = He looks for a notebook in the stationery store Julio mira un cuaderno. = Julio looks at a notebook Mira un bolígrafo también. = He looks at a pen also Julio habla con la dependienta = Julio talks with the employee El cuaderno, Cuánto es? por favor = How much is the notebook, please? Noventa pesos = Ninety pesos Julio compra el cuaderno. = Julio buys the notebook El cuaderno cuesta noventa pesos. = The notebook costs 90 pesos Julio paga noventa pesos = Julio pays 90 pesos Paga en la caja. = He pays at the cash register Lleva los materiales escolares en una mochila = He carries school supplies in a backpack PALABRAS 2: EN LA TIENDA DE ROPA (In the clothing store) La muchacha lleva una camiseta y un blue jean = The girl wears a tee-shirt & jeans Lleva un par de tenis = She wears a pair of tennis shoes Lleva una chaqueta = She wears a jacket No lleva una falda = She doesn t wear a skirt Gloria habla con la empleada = Gloria talks with the employee Qué desea Ud.? = May I help you? (in a store)

El treinta y cuatro = Thirty-four Rubén compra un par de zapatos = Rubén buys a pair of shoes Él habla con el dependiente = He talks with the salesman Qué número usa (calza) Ud.? = What size do you take? El treinta y ocho = Thirty- eight La camisa cuesta mucho = The shirt costs a lot Es muy cara = It is expensive La gorra cuesta poco = The cap costs very little Es bastante barata = It s quite cheap / inexpensive LOS VERBOS DE -AR: INFINITIVE hablar comprar mirar ENDINGS STEM habl- compr- mir- Yo hablo compro miro -O Tú hablas compras miras -AS Él habla compra mira -A Ella habla compra mira -A Usted (Ud.) habla compra mira -A Nosotros hablamos compramos miramos -AMOS Ellos / Ellas hablan compran miran -AN Ustedes (Uds.) hablan compran miran -AN 1. Remove -AR ending from the infinitive to form of the verb stem 2. Add the ending to the stem that agrees with the subject 3. YOU, in the singular, has two forms: Tú and Ud. FRASES EN EL NEGATIVO: Yo no compro / No compro = I don't buy
3 ADJECTIVE / NOUN AGREEMENT Adjectives (color) come after nouns they describe (clothing) Adjectives need to agree in gender & number with nouns they describe una blusa roja unas faldas rosadas un vestido negro unos calcetines blancos TÚ vs. USTED: TÚ = informal (familiar) Used when talking to a friend, a family member, or someone your own age (the person is called by their first name) USTED = formal (polite) (Ud.) Used when talking to an older person, a person you do not know well, or anyone to whom you want to show respect (the person is addressed with a title: Señor, Señorita, Señora, etc.) MÁS NÚMEROS (100 1,000): 100 cien (only used one hundred) 150 ciento cincuenta 200 doscientos 300 trescientos 400 cuatrocientos 500 quinientos 600 seiscientos 700 setecientos 790 setecientos noventa 800 ochocientos 900 novecientos 1,000 mil 1,800 mil ochocientos
4 CONVERSATION: Have a conversation with a friend. Discuss: what he/she carries in his/her backpack what supplies are needed for new school yr. (la apertura de clases) where he/she buys supplies describe what he/she wears & what you wear (including color/print) describe what he/she needs, buys and pays for at a clothing store where he/she buys clothes how much clothes and shoes cost what size he/she wears in clothing and shoes Write 9 questions in Spanish asking your friend about the information above: Write your partner s answers. Start with the pronoun Él or Ella
