4 It is a pleasure to welcome you and fellow members of The merican ssociation of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (TSP) to Puerto Rico, a unique destination within the Caribbean that offers guests an infinite variety of vacation experiences. Puerto Rico has something for everyone; from family outings to explore nature and adventure, to playing at championship golf courses, practicing water sports such as diving, deep sea fishing and surfing, and enjoying casinos, shopping and fine dining. San Juan is a historic landmark lined with white sand beaches and exciting nightlife that attract millions of visitors each year. However, just minutes away from the cosmopolitan center of Puerto Rico's capital city you will find amazing natural beauty and small rustic towns where you can enjoy other attractions that are part of our distinctive cultural heritage. Towards the east coast, El unque Rainforest, a UNESCO Biosphere, offers the opportunity to explore and learn about Puerto Rico's fauna and flora. ou can travel to El unque in the morning and spend the afternoon relaxing and basking in the sun at the nearby Luquillo Beach. Just off shore from the coast lie the islands of Vieques and Culebra with their world famous beaches. The West, known as Porta del Sol, offers the perfect vacation to those who love water sports. We are delighted you have joined us for what promises to be one of the TSP s best conferences. The conference theme-- Exploring Heritage Languages and Cultures: Challenges and Opportunities, will be addressed in the regular sessions, workshops, E-posters, and academic panels. Excursions to local sites are planned with a focus on providing information that can be used in the classroom. side from a wide selection of presentations, conference participants will have access to exhibits by companies and organizations that produce the latest language learning products and services. San Juan, Puerto Rico has always been a popular and successful site for the TSP conference and 2012 promises to continue that tradition. This year s conference program is one of the largest in recent years and includes some 240 sessions, workshops, E-poster presentations, academic panels, and special events. Many conference sessions and events are tied to the conference theme: Exploring Heritage Languages and Cultures:Challenges and Opportunities. The opening plenary session offers a panel discussion on contemporary Puerto Rican theater by important actors, directors, and critics along with video clips of recent theatrical events. In a special session sponsored by Santillana US, the noted Puerto Rican author Mayra Santos-Febres will read from her work and provide insights into her literary world. The well-known and admired presenter Laura Terrill will provide a keynote address and special sessions on using Puerto Rican culture to enhance communication and language skills. In addition to our regular conference sessions and workshops, we are again offering excursions on the second afternoon of the conference. These excursions to Viejo San Juan and El unque should provide you with cultural information that you will be able to use in the classroom. This year for the first time you can follow the conference on Twitter and Facebook where you will find conference updates and reminders and have the opportunity to chat with your fellow conference participants. When my survey course on Spanish-merican Literature exceeds ten students, it becomes easy for those who are afraid to speak the target language to hide or sit on the fence. Last year I implemented the use of WebCT discussion boards to ensure 100% completion of the readings and encourage class participation.
