4 It is a pleasure to welcome you and fellow members of The merican ssociation of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (TSP) to Puerto Rico, a unique destination within the Caribbean that offers guests an infinite variety of vacation experiences. We are delighted you have joined us for what promises to be one of the TSP s best conferences. The conference theme-- Exploring Heritage Languages and Cultures: Challenges and Opportunities, will be addressed in the regular sessions, workshops, E-posters, and academic panels. San Juan, Puerto Rico has always been a popular and successful site for the TSP conference and 2012 promises to continue that tradition. This year s conference program is one of the largest in recent years and includes some 240 sessions, workshops, E-poster presentations, academic panels, and special events. Many conference sessions and events are tied to the conference theme: Exploring Heritage Languages and Cultures:Challenges and Opportunities. The opening plenary session offers a panel discussion on contemporary Puerto Rican theater by important actors, directors, and critics along with video clips of recent theatrical events. In a special session sponsored by Santillana US, the noted Puerto Rican author Mayra Santos-Febres will read from her work and provide insights into her literary world. The well-known and admired presenter Laura Terrill will provide a keynote address and special sessions on using Puerto Rican culture to enhance communication and language skills. In addition to our regular conference sessions and workshops, we are again offering excursions on the second afternoon of the conference. These excursions to Viejo San Juan and El unque should provide you with cultural information that you will be able to use in the classroom. When my survey course on Spanish-merican Literature exceeds ten students, it becomes easy for those who are afraid to speak the target language to hide or sit on the fence. Last year I implemented the use of WebCT discussion boards to ensure 100% completion of the readings and encourage class participation. This paper analyzes anthropocentric and ecocentric tendencies among environmental perspectives that present themselves in major works written by Vargas Llosa. This paper contends that although anthropocentric discourse concerning the environment has declined throughout the latter part of the twentieth century, in these works, this type of discourse has evolved, rejecting earlier misconceptions of the natural world but holding on to technocentric beliefs.
