4 Introduction Introducción This neighborhood guidebook was created by 31 Columbine Elementary School students in 5th grade in collaboration with Columbine Elementary School teachers and University of Colorado at Denver & Health Sciences Center professors and students. The purpose of Columbine Cougars in the Community is to share young people s knowledge and experiences of where they live and to share these ideas with people that make decisions about their community. We think this book should be shared with neighbors, new people in the neighborhood, friends, Mayor Hickenlooper, teachers, and family members. Columbine Cougars in the Community gives ideas about where to play in the neighborhood, where we get food, and how we spend our time. The book also shows where there are bad places in the neighborhood and our ideas about making the community a better place to live. The neighborhoods where most of us live are called Skyland, Clayton, Whittier and Cole. These neighborhoods are located in northeast Dever, CO. Most of the people who live here are African American or Hispanic. We hope all readers of this book learn what it is like to grow up here. 8 About our neighborhood Sobre nuestro We think of our neighborhood in different ways. You can see from this map that we all have different areas that we consider to be our neighborhood or community. We consider our neighborhood or community to be the area where we know people and say hello to them, places where there are stores we shop, places where we like to play, and places where we spend a lot of time. 10 About our school Sobre nuestra escuela We have a new Learning Landscapes playground that we all helped to design. This playground has a hill we call Struggle Hill that symbolizes the struggle by African Americans for civil rights. There are also two memorials for teachers who sadly passed away. Their names are Carol Berger and Jill Connet. We also have a pet that passed away; his name is Cheeks. Our playground gives us places to play and shade where we can relax. Nosotros tenemos un patio de recreo nuevo hecho por Learning Landscapes que ayudamos a diseñar. Este patio de recreo tiene un cerro llamado Cerro de Lucha que simboliza la lucha por derechos civiles por los afro-americanos. 11 How we get to school Number of students A picture of the school playground - Sumayyah car bus walk Transportation Most of us get to and from school by car with someone in our family. We usually travel by car because it takes less time than walking and it is easier for our parents to take all of our brothers and sisters to school at the same time. A few of us walk to school because we live close to Columbine and have the time to walk there. La mayoría viaje para la escuela en coche con alguien de la familia. You can see the average number of movie DVDs and music CDs for our group is over 50! Many of us also have large families and other people we live with. 15 out of 29 of us have computers that are connected to the Internet. This is a picture of Taneesja and Ecstasy by our lovable teacher s memorial - Cierra Page 12 How we spend our time During the school week, we spend most of our time on technology-related activities, such as watching television, listening to music, playing video games, talking on the telephone, and using the computer. We also spend a good amount of time on physical activities, such as playing sports, going for a bike ride or walk, walking the dog, dancing, and playing outside. On the weekends, we spend most of our time doing physical activities, such as playing outside and going for a bike ride. Como pasamos nuestro tiempo Durante la semana escolar pasamos la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo en actividades técnologicas, como viendo la televisión, escuchando la música, jugando juegos de video, hablando en el teléfono, y usando la computadora. Tambien passamos una buena cantidad del tiempo en actividades físicas, como haciendo los deportes, andando en bicicleta o caminando, llevando el perro en un paseo, bailando y jugando fuera. Our research shows that on average, our group takes 10,864 steps during a 24 hour period. On average, girls take more steps than boys (girls take 11,841 steps and boys take 8,392 steps). Some girls take more steps because they are in an afterschool program that walks many places. We take more steps on the weekend than during the school week. On average we take 11,355 steps on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and 9,469 during the school week (Monday through Friday). We take more steps on the weekend because we have more free time to do what we want. Cuantos son nuestros pasos? Nuestro estudio indica que en promedio, nuestro grupo toma 10,864 pasos durante 24 horas. 14 Places We Play Los sitios donde jugamos A place I like is my grandmother s house. It is big and it has an upstairs and a downstairs. I always like to spend the night there. The color of my grandmother s house is dark red. Mostly all my cousins like to hang out there. Mostly every time we have a party we have it at my grandmother s house. She has seven bedrooms. We like to play in the big backyard. We like to talk. That s my favorite place to hang out. A me mi gusta la casa de mi abuela. Es tan grande y tiene un piso de arriba. Siempre me gusta pasar la noche allí. El color de la casa de mi abuela es rojo oscuro. Casi todos mis primos le gustan estar allí. Casi siempre que tenemos una fiesta la tenemos a la casa de mi abuela. Ella tiene 7 dormitorios. Nos gustamos jugar en su patio grande. A nos gustamos conversar. Es mi sitio favorito para pasar el tiempo. - Sofia My favorite place to hang out is the park at Green Valley because I can play tag with my sisters. Also, I play basketball with my sister, Vicky. My sister, Theresa, loves to play in the swings with her friend Jasee. Araceli likes to walk the dog. The park is so cool to me because it is never closed. I can go to the park when it snows, rains and even when it is windy. My sister loves to lay basketball in the rain. I love to play soccer, and football. The park is my favorite place to be. Mi sitio favorito para pasar el tiempo es el parque del Valle Verde porque yo puedo jugar la tray con mis hermanas. También, juego básquetbol con mi hermana, Vicky. Mí hermana, Theresa, ama jugar en los columpios con su amiga Jasee. Araceli le gusta caminar con el perro.el parque es muy útil porque está siempre abierto. Yo puedo ir al parque cuando nieva, llovia o también cuando hay viento. Mi hermana le gusta jugar básquetbol en la lluvia. Yo amo jugar fútbol, las dos clases. 15 My favorite hangout spot is on 29th and High. That is the Denver Public Library. The Denver Public Library is a place to check out as many books or movies as you want, as long as you return your other check-outs. It gives me a place to study when I need it. Here is a place to go when you have spare time. What do I do at the library? I do tons of things at the library, for example I look up websites. You can read or listen to stories. Also you can see puppet shows, even arts and crafts. The library is a nice, cool place to go in the summer. These are some activities I do at the Denver Public Library. Mi sitio favorito para pasar el tiempo está en la Calle 29 y Calle High. Esta es la Biblioteca Pública de Denver. La Biblioteca Pública de Denver es un sitio donde se puede tomar prestado tantos libros y películas que quieras, si devuelves tus otros libros prestados. Me da un sitio donde puedo estudiar cuando lo necesito. Es un sitio donde se puede ir cuando hay tiempo libre. Se puede leer o escuchar los cuentos. Que hago cuando voy a la biblioteca? Hago muchísimas cosas, por ejemplo, yo busco sitios de Web en el Internet. También se puede ver las representaciones de títeres, y hacer artes y artesanías. La biblioteca es un lugar bueno, fresco donde se puede ir durante el verano. Estas son algunas de las actividades que yo hago allí. - Ecstasy This is a picture of a school park where I play - Miguel This is a picture of my favorite park. - Perla One of my fun places to play at is Fuller Park. I like playing there because you can see the dogs play and you can play basketball, swing, and lots of other things. I also like it there because you can climb trees or you can play tag. If I do not do these sports I roll in the grass or I run in the sprinklers when they turn them on. I really like when I pick the grass and I make mud pies or a cake at Fuller Park. I also like to play fighting with sticks. This is what I do for fun at Fuller Park. Uno sitio donde mi divierto en jugar es El Parque Fuller. Mi gusta jugar ahí porque se puede ver los perros y se puede jugar básquetbol, columpiar, y muchas otras cosas. También mi gusta estar ahí porque se puede subir en los árboles o se puede jugar la tray con los amigos. Si no hago estos deportivos, rodo en la césped o corro en la agua de la regader. 16 Places we get food Los sitios donde comemos A place I like to go and eat is Casa Bonita! I like this place because of the food, the plays, the arcade, and the terrific diving. The most interesting thing about Casa Bonita is that the whole place is a castle. My favorite play is Tarzan. The gorilla pushed Tarzan in the water. What a place! Casa Bonita has fried food! My favorite food there is the enchilada. The enchilada is a Mexican dish with tomatoes and tortillas and also cheese. My favorite appetizer is the soppapilla. The soppapilla is a Mexican dessert; it is the fried bread you eat with honey. I love Casa Bonita. Un restaurante donde me gusta ir y comer es Casa Bonita! Mi gusta este sitio por causa de la comida, las dramas, la gallería, y las zambullidas terríficas. La cosa más interesante de Casa Bonita es que es un castillo. Mi drama favorito es Tarzan. La gorilla empuja Tarzan al agua. Que sitio! Casa Bonita tiene comidas fritas. Mi comida favorita ahí es la enchilada. La enchilada es una comida Mexicana con tomates, tortillas y queso. Mi aperitivo favorito es la soppapilla. La soppapilla es un postre Mexicano; es pan frito que se come con la miel. Yo amo Casa Bonita. One of the places I go to eat at is Country Buffet. Country Buffet is a restaurant with all different kinds of food. It is an important place for me to hang out at because you can get the food that you want and there is no shooting or crashes. The things I like are the kind of food they have. They serve hot wings, pasta and chicken pasta. I like it because I can get anything I want like chocolate chips, Oreos, and all other kinds. I also like it because they give you like work sheets. This is a place where I eat and hang out. Uno de los sitios voy a comer es Country Buffet. Country Buffet es un restaurante con todos tipos de comidas. Es un sitio importante para mí pasar el tiempo porque se puede tener toda la comida que quiere, y no hay tiros, ni colisiones. Las cosas que me gustan son los tipos de comidas que hay. Sirven las alas picantes, pasta y pasta con pollo. Me gusta porque puedo tener lo que quiero como chips chocolates, Oreos, y muchos otros tipos. Lo me gusta también porque mi dan papeles donde se puede escribir las cosas que quiere. 17 My favorite restaurant is the Torres restaurant. It s called the Torres because the person that owns it has the last name Torres. I went there on Saturday to celebrate my brother s baseball game that he won. I ate cheesy, hot, melty enchiladas. They are my favorite food. It is important to me because it has my favorite food, dessert, and drink. My favorite dessert is a big, vanilla cup of ice cream with a juicy cherry on the top. I like to hang out there a long time with them. If we go we go at 12:45. Then we leave at 2:00 pm. When we get out of there we come out very full. I like to go there all the time. It is very far from my house. It is my favorite restaurant to go on Saturdays. They sell a lot of good food and good desserts. All my family goes there. The Torres restaurant is the best Mexican food. Mi restaurante favorito es El Torres. Se llama Torres porque la persona que es el dueño se llama Torres. Yo la fui el Sábado para celebrar el juego de béisbol de mi hermano que el gano. Yo comí enchiladas calientes con mucho queso derretido. Es mi comida favorita. Este sitio es importante para mí porque tiene mi comida, postre y bebida favorita. Mi postre favorito es una copa de helado de vainilla con un cerezo. Si entramos a 12:45, y salimos a 2:00. Salimos muy llenos. Mi gusta ir allí siempre. Está muy lejos de mi casa. Es mi restaurante favorito por los sábados. Ellos venden mucha comida buena y postres buenos. Toda mi familia come ahí. El restaurante Torres tiene la mejor comida Mexicana. - Sandra Picture of a Mexican Restaurant called Torres where I like to eat - Sandra Picture of McDonalds - Danell My favorite place to eat is the International House of Pancakes, typically known as IHOP. What I like to eat there is breakfast, lunch and dinner. For breakfast I have turkey sausage, eggs, pancakes and a beverage. For lunch I have a grilled cheese sandwich or a cheeseburger, French fries, and a beverage too! Don t worry! I don t eat like this every day. Why I like their food is because it doesn t have that much fat and calories in it, and you would never want to waste any of it. I mostly spend about 30 minutes to an hour eating there because it takes a couple of minutes to get the food ready. I really like IHOP and I will never stop eating there. Mi sitio favorito para comer es International House of Pancakes, conocido como IHOP. Me gusta comer el desayuno, el almuerzo y la cena ahí. Por el desayuno como salchicha, huevos, pan queques, y algo de beber. Para el almuerzo como un sándwich de queso tojada o un burger con queso, papas fritas, y algo de beber también. No preocupe! No como así todos los días. La razón que me gusta esta comida es porque no hay mucho graso. Yo gasto 30 minutos a una hora comiendo ahí porque lleva solamente unos minutos preparar la comida. Me gusta muchísimo IHOP, y nunca pararé de comer ahí. - Sumayyah If I were to change my community... If I were to change my neighborhood I would build a grocery store next to my house. The poor people could go in and get groceries for free. I would also build a gymnasium for everybody to play in. Also every Saturday we would make a block party. I would build a park for every single person in my peaceful with-a-little bitof-violence neighborhood. And I would ask people to please stop the violence. Si yo pudiera cambiar mi yo construiré un mercado de comidas al lado de mi casa. La gente pobre podría entrar y ganar las comidas sin pagar. También, yo construiré un gimnasio para todos poder jugar. Todos los sábados seria una fiesta por la cuadra. Yo construiré un parque para cada persona en mi de paz con un poquito de violencia. 18 Bad Places Los sitios malos Bad places are at liquor stores. It smells bad inside. It is bad because somebody can get drunk and come out. It is also bad because some people can try to get you to drink beer and smoke. Also Manual High School is a bad place. It is bad because gangs hang out there, also because gangs fight there. The last place that is bad is Columbine Street. It is bad because there are drive-bys. That s why those are bad places. A good place is at the police station. It is a good place because police can see what is going on around you. It is also a good place because police are by you. Another good place is a public school. It is a good place because teachers and students are aware about what happens to you. Also because you can run to the school if something might happen to you. Those are places that are good and why. Los sitios malos son las tiendas de licores. Tiene mal olor por dentro. Es mal porque alguien puede estar borracho y sale. También es malo porque gente mala puede tentarte a beber la cerveza y fumar. También la escuela, Manual, es un sitio malo. Es malo porque hay las cuadrillas ahí. El último sitio malo es la Calle Columbine. Es malo porque hay los pistoleros ahí. Estos son los razones que estos sitios son malos. Un sitio bueno es la Estación de Policía. Es un sitio bueno porque la policía puede ver todo que pasa cerca de ti. La policía esta a tu lado. Un otro sitio bueno es la escuela pública. Esta es buena porque los maestros y estudiantes están consciente de lo que pasa en relación a ti. 19 All of the trash is all over the ground. I bet you that the trash you can smell is all the garbage of your house. It is awful that some people have to sleep by them. They also have to eat from them. It is nasty. That is what the poor people do if they do not have a house, food, or family to help them. I also think the alleys are not a safe place to pass by. I say when you throw trash to be by someone so they can help you if you get in danger. Toda la basura está en la tierra. Aposto que toda la basura que ole es la basura de su casa. Es terrible que haya personas sin casa que deben dormir al lado de la basura. También, tengan que comer ahí. Es odioso. Es esto que la gente pobre hace si no hay una casa, comida, ni familia para ayudar. No pienso que los callejones sean seguros para pasar. Si debe ir al callejón vaya con alguien quien puede ayudarte se hay peligro. - Sandra There are a lot of places that are bad. But I think liquor stores are one of the worst. Liquor stores are bad because there are a lot of drunk people. I think that there shouldn t be so many. Not only that, people smoke too. Those things are bad. Drunk people can kidnap you. They can also do something else to you when you don t expect it. People that smoke can go out to smoke, and you can breathe it and it will destroy your health. That s why I think liquor stores are bad. Hay muchos sitios que son malos. Pero, yo pienso que las tiendas de licores son los peores. Las tiendas de licores son malos porque hay muchos borrachos. Pienso que no debía haber tantos. También, hay gente que fuma. Estas cosas son malas. Los borrachos pueden ti raptar. Se pueden hacer otras cosas también en el momento en que no la espera. La gente que fuma puede ir fuera de la tienda para fumar y usted puede respirar la fuma. Esto puede destruir su salud. Es por todo esto que pienso que las tiendas de licores son malos. - Perla This is a picture of a tagged garage - Miguel Alleys are so dangerous. Never be caught in an alley without a cell phone or company. Why? Many horrible things can happen. Alleys are even more deadly at night. Please stay out of alleys; they are just not good. You are wondering what is so dangerous about alleys. Here are some reasons: you can get sexually harassed or, even worse, killed, raped, chased or any of those bad things. Also a gang of Crips can shoot you. For your own safety stay out of alleys. Los callejones son muy peligrosos. Nunca se deja de estar presa en un callejón sin un celular o un compañero. Porque?
