5 Strategic Communications: Newsletter Campaign Redesign for Valley Outreach ( ) I re-designed a monthly newsletter campaign for Valley Outreach, a Stillwater, Minn.-based nonprofit ( The newsletter campaign is part of an initiative to encourage donations and volunteers from area churches and expand the nonprofit s donor base. The campaign includes teaser text with internal anchors to full story content to enable scanning the entire newsletter s content on one screen. I also added links, promotional content for upcoming events, and images. 5

6 Instruction & Training: Metropolitan State University Career Services ( ) I wrote and modified several educational pieces, including a resume creation and evaluation packet, sample resumes for various fields and majors, job search strategies and other materials in Word and PowerPoint. Collaborated to design a Resume Resources page that is available at Edited a monthly newsletter that is distributed to all students and staff. Facilitated resume workshops and met one-on-one with students to develop their resumes, cover letters, reference pages and other materials. Assisted with designing and writing marketing materials. Review this step-by-step guide to create these documents from scratch, revise what you already have, or confirm that your existing materials already place you in the best competitive position in the job marketplace. Your job search documents should put forth a sense of credibility, facts and emotion that will convince a potential employer that you are a good fit. Good design and organization are key components, as are thoughtful wording and mistake-free writing. Focus on experience, education and skills that relate to your career goals. Many jobs build skills that transfer to other professions. Coursework, class projects, volunteerism and other experience can help you as well. Balance the information you include to make sure it isn t too much or too little. Omit un-necessary information that doesn t support your goals. Resumes are fluid documents that should be evaluated and edited on a regular basis. Continue to add resumebuilding activities and memberships. Volunteerism, internships, student organization membership and professional associations add to your professional image. 6

7 Design: Combined Resume Template (2012) Resume Samples I modified and created resume samples to suit various needs. The sample to the left is a combined resume that allows a student to focus on skills that aren t learned from work experience. Sections of the resume allow the student to brand herself, list related coursework, promote laboratory skills and experience helping classmates, as well as list professional experience. 8 Design: Career Fair Poster (2011) Career Fair Marketing Collaborated with Metropolitan State University Career Services director, career counselor, as well as the university s art director to create flyers and name badges for the Government and Nonprofit Career Fair at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. 9 Design: Portfolio Website (2012-Present) Resume, Education Details, Work Samples, Webmail I designed and created a personal portfolio website to serve as a convenient location for my resume, education details, writing and design samples, contact information and webmail. I reviewed available literature and books on portfolio creation, as well as the rhetorical principles behind effective portfolios during creation and revision. 11 Social Media: Fan Page for New Path Counseling (2012) Social Media in Business, Adademic Settings I designed and created a Facebook page for New Path Counseling that features a link to the website, information about the business, as well as links to recent blogs by the business owner, relevant links and inspirational photography. I also have assisted with social media development for Metropolitan State University s master s programs in Technical Communication, Liberal Studies and Computer Science by interviewing department chairs, taking photos and compiling information to prepare the pages to be turned over to the department for administration. 11

12 Design: Church Website (2011 Information Architecture, Collaboration I designed and created a website for Trinity Lutheran Church in Rice Lake, Wis., and currently serve as its volunteer webmaster. The site includes a contact page with a map and contact form, pastor s message, related links, calendar, church history and activities pages. I ve also incorporated many photos and made the site inviting to visitors and potential members of the congregation. 12

13 Project Management: Website Creation, Launching (2011-Present) Creation of a Nonprofit Site from Scratch I served as project manager for the creation of the website for the Seven Fires Summit ( org), coordinating scheduling, design and client communications for the noprofit s site. I helped launch the siteand am currently the volunteer webmaster for the organization. The site was created using standards compliant XHTML and CSS in a five-week timeframe by a group of six students in Writing and Designing for the Web in the summer of

14 Design & Marketing: University Admissions Radical Localization ( ) Researched and Radically Localized Admissions Marketing Materials I designed and created a cohesive set of marketing materials that were researched and radically localized for a Latino audience under the direction and consultation of Metropolitan State University s undergraduate admissions director. The materials comply with the university s style guidelines for logo usage, font and color. The first drafts were created using Microsoft Publisher, and final drafts were created using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator and Microsoft Word. Sandve Print & Online Project Management, Editing: Washington Court Rules ( ) Lead Editor for Local, State and Annotated State Annual Editions I led production from acquisition of court orders in hardcopy and digital format from the courts to sending the final product to manufacturing for printing. I also led online updates on Westlaw of all the content in the books. The content was produced using proprietary XML content management and pagination programs that generated datasets for the individual volumes. I collaborated with typesetters, coders, covers and index departments, as well as the state Administrative Office of the Courts, individual courts and attorney authors. 16

17 Business Journalism & Newspaper Editing: Finance and Commerce ( ) Staff Writer, Photographer, Production Editor I covered topics including real estate, business, law and construction as a staff writer for Finance and Commerce daily newspaper, based in Minneapolis. It is owned by Minneapolis-based Dolan Media. The article sample below is captured from a reprint ordered by the attorneys I interviewed for a story on construction litigation. 18 Feature Writing & Photography: Rice Lake Chronotype ( ) Feature stories, community news, photography I wrote substantive features stories for the Rice Lake Chronotype, a large weekly in northwest Wisconsin. I also was a photographer and covered other community news including business, schools and local government. Below is part of the text from a feature story on a retired nuclear engineer that I wrote on January 15, Full text is available at Rice Lake retiree reminisces about his nuclear career Rice Lake retiree Willard Benny Benson went from working with metal lathes to plutonium during his career as an engineer. We used the technology to meet the threat, with the idea that they would never be used, he said. Nuclear bombs are the greatest deterrent we could ever make to a nuclear war. Benson said the Cold War ended because of the nation s sheer superiority. It s a great contribution to peace. He said the goal was to never have to use nuclear bombs after bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Benson said nuclear bombs are civilian-held to prevent misuse by the Armed Forces. He said that they are also designed by civilians, and there has never been an inadvertent nuclear bomb explosion. The research and development of nuclear weapons also brought many spin-offs, Benson explained. He said a lot was learned about radiation and other medical uses, and many advanced technological devices were also developed, he said. The Beginning Benson was one of the original Navy crew that launched the U.S.S. Oak Hill ship into the Pacific in January of He stayed on the ship until WW II was over, being in charge of the machine shop in the amphibious attack ship. He said the ship wasn t hit, but a Japanese kamikaze plane attempting to dive bomb the ship landed in the sea in a fiery crash that singed his eyebrows. Benson said he was on the ship for about a dozen major invasions, and at the end of the war he was near Japan when the bombs were dropped. He said he didn t have any idea that in the future he would be involved with nuclear weapons during the peak of the arms race. The two bombs dropped on Japan were code-named Little Boy and Fat Man, in the hope that the enemy would think they were references to Winston Churchill and Harry S. Truman. The bombs both had about 20 kilotons of power. The power of nuclear explosives is measured in kilotons; one kiloton is equivalent to the exploding power of 1,000 tons of TNT. After the war, Benson returned to school at Stout State University, now UW-Stout in Menomonie, where he finished his bachelor s degree in

19 Community Journalism, Photography, Layout: Wisconsin Dells Events ( ) Staff writer, photographer, page layout I began working at Wisconsin Dells Events twice-weekly newspaper shortly after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in I covered the schools, local government and business. Below is a writing and photography sample from I wrote all the stories and took all the photos on Page 1. For full text of the articles please access 19 School Board President Dennis Draper and Spring Hill Elementary Principal Carol Johnson handed in resignations at Tuesday evening s school board meeting. Draper said he is seeking the position of buildings and grounds director for the school, which was recently left open by the resignation of Doug Fisk. Thursday, District Administrator Patrick Kennedy said eight interviews will be scheduled next week, including Draper and staff members seeking the position. We ve got a good, strong board, Draper said. He thanked his neighbors, family and friends for their support over his five years on the board Johnson said she submitted her resignation with true mixed emotions. In her resignation letter, she said she had accepted the position of principal at an elementary school in Hastings, Minn., which is near family and friends. This has not been an easy decision for I have enjoyed working with the students, staff and parents of Spring Hill. In addition, the administration of Wisconsin Dells has been marvelous to work with, and I will miss being part of such a cohesive and professional team, she wrote. Johnson will be receiving significantly more money in the new position. She said she will receive $70,000 in the new job, and she was to have received $51,562 for the school year.
