1 INSTRUCTIONS RE THE PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS AND THE CONTEXTUAL DIALOGUE (DIME 4) I. The first two exercises, Public Announcements, are based on Unidad 5 En las tiendas in Dime Book 4. They are meant to give you practice in listening comprehension while at the same time they help you to consolidate your knowledge of the vocabulary based on shopping for clothes. The exercise is in the form of public announcements, which are now part of the new CXC Syllabus and will help you to become accustomed to dealing with this type of test. If you look at p. 74 in Dime tanto más you will see that at question 16 there is a large square in which there is the name of the store at the top La Juventud while there are pictures of the various items that are sold. In the bottom part of the square you will see a heading Para los jóvenes which is followed by more pictures of items and those items are on sale. The first exercise in the section Public Announcements is meant to reinforce your knowledge of the vocabulary and structures which are used in this type of situation shopping for clothes that are on sale. You are advised to go through exercise 16 on p. 74 and the top of p. 75 in your text, Dime tanto más carefully and absorb the vocabulary before you attempt the first set of public announcements. II. The next two exercises, Contextual Dialogues, are based on both Unidad 5 En las tiendas and 6 Los servicios públios (primera parte) in Dime Book 4. They will give you practice on constructing dialogues which are based on particular situations and in which you are given pointers as to what should be included in each of the dialogues. The first dialogue deals with you going to your friend s store in order to buy an outfit for a dance, and the conversation that you have with the sales clerk. If you look at pp of your text, you will see the kind of dialogue that you need to construct, the expressions that you should use, for example Puede probárselas. You can try them on., Cuánto son? How much do they cost? and other useful expressions that will help you to produce a good flowing dialogue that sounds quite natural. Look also in Unidad 5 at the section entitled Manos a la obra!, exercise E, p. 83, where you are required to write a dialogue on shopping for an outfit for a forthcoming event. The second dialogue deals with you being on holiday in a foreign country and doing what you must do, this is, go to a bank to change either traveller s cheques or currency. To assist you with this exercise, you need to look at Unidad 6 in your text, pp , exercise 11 where you will find the kind of vocabulary and structures that you need in order to carry out your transaction and to produce your dialogue. Once more, as in the first dialogue, you are guided as to the types of expressions you need to use, and you are also provided with them in the sections on pp on En la casa de cambio and En el banco (primera parte). Expressions such as A cuánto está el euro hoy? What is the
