2 1 General Information Does my event require a special event permit? Certain events held within the City limits require a City of Watsonville special event permit. A special event permit is required if the event: Contact the Parks & Community Services Customer Service Center to register for the activities listed in this guide or for more information about the Department. 231 Union St. Hours: M-Th 9am-5pm takes place on or in City of Watsonville property such as streets, parks, building, etc.; is open to the public; will feature entertainment such as singing, dancing, a DJ, a choir, etc; will feature sound amplification such as the use of PA systems, microphones, stereo, etc. is a parade, march or procession; and/or requires street closures. For additional information, call or visit the Parks and Community Services Customer Service Center at 231 Union St. Summer Special Events in Downtown Watsonville Spirit of Watsonville 4th of July Parade Saturday, July 4 Parade steps off at 2 p.m. Celebrate the 4th of July at a good, old fashioned parade! Parade entry forms are available at the PCS customer service office at 231 Union St. or on the parade website at All parade entries must register prior to the parade date. No registrations will be accepted at the parade. 21st Annual Watsonville Strawberry Festival Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Enjoy delicious strawberry treats, a family-friendly carnival, arts & crafts and live entertainment. The Friends of Watsonville Parks and Community Services, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) corporation formed in 2013 dedicated to promoting the welfare of the city of Watsonville community through the support and enhancement of the parks and recreational, cultural, and educational programs administered by the City of Watsonville Parks and Community Services Department. 5 Activities For Youth 4 LET S MAKE PIÑATAS! Ages: 6-16 Learn how to make a piñata from start to finish in this two day workshop. The first day will be spent creating the shape of your piñata and on the second day you will decorate it. Location: Callaghan Park Cultural Center F/M 5/1 & 5/4 4-6pm Free CALLAGHAN PARK CULTURAL Ages: All CENTER OPEN HOUSE Come and see all the great things that happen at Callaghan Park! Meet the staff and learn about the Itty Bitty Program, Music Together classes, summer happenings and all of the activities offered during the drop-in program. Refreshments will be served. Location: Callaghan Park Cultural Center W 5/13 4-6pm Free G.H.W.R. YOUTH CENTER SUMMER Ages: 6-22 BLOCK PARTY Let the summer begin! The G.H.W.R Youth Center located in the heart of Watsonville will host its first ever summer block party to welcome the summer. Come and enjoy a variety of activities, including water games. Practice your aim with our carnival dunk tank, ring toss and smash cans while winning some awesome raffle prizes. Some of the best munchies will be served along with our secret ingredient drinks. We will be ending the party with a movie on our giant inflatable screen, so bring your blankets and beach chairs and enjoy a great start to the summer. Do not miss out on the fun and hear it from someone else; come experience it for yourself! Early exposure to music and movement has the potential to make a dramatic impact on young, developing minds. Music Together is a world-renowned early childhood music and movement enrichment program for infants, toddlers and preschoolers that teaches parents and other adult care providers how to create a rich musical learning environment for young children in a developmentallyappropriate and non-performance oriented way. Weekly classes are lively, playful and fun for everyone and filled with researchbased lessons on how and why we should all make music with our little ones. Musical skill is not what s important. Willingness to play and an eagerness to learn how to make the most of each young child s development is crucial! We ll celebrate days such as Chocolate Pudding Day (June 26th), Superman s Birthday (June 30th), Video Game Day (July 8th), and wiggle your toes day (August 6th). Our neighborhood will join thousands of communities throughout the United States to celebrate this event with the goal of strengthening neighborhood unity and promoting police-community partnerships. Join us as we transform Callaghan Park into an oasis of fun with games, music, raffles and prizes for the entire family. We ll wrap up the event with an outdoor movie at the park. Location: Callaghan Park T 8/4 6-10pm Free BACK 2 SCHOOL Ages: MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE School is back in session and it s time to reconnect with your friends. What better way to do it than at the best back to school party in town. Black lights, fog machines and today s hottest music provide the perfect spot to dance the night away. On October 22, more than 7,500 communities and 1 million Americans will celebrate Lights on Afterschool! Together we will demonstrate how afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning. Interactive booths will include arts and crafts and games. Come and decorate your own sugar skull. You ll learn more about roots and beliefs of this Latin American tradition while working on sugar skulls, papel picado and much more! You will also help make an altar, so bring a small trinket, food item or toy that symbolizes you or a loved one. 6 5 Activities For Youth HALLOWEEN MAZE OF HORROR Ages: Dare to enter a maze full of suspense and darkness that will have you trembling with fear and excitement at every turn. This maze will be so spooky and creepy that you might need to hold on to your friends the entire way through. Or, you can try and see if you are brave enough to face the horrors on your own... Location: Gene Hoularis and Waldo Rodriguez Youth Center F 10/30 5-8pm Free FROSTY S CRAFTY WORKSHOP Ages: 6-10 Need gifts for Mom, Dad, Grandpa and Grandma, plus those special Aunties and Uncles? How about a handmade reindeer photo ornament, pasta snowflake, or handprint wreaths? Gifts created by children are treasured year after year. Register your child today to create those memories for your family members. SUMMER DAY CAMP Ages 5 to 12 THE BEAT ZONE REHEARSAL SPACE Ages: 6-22 Are you tired of your parents and neighbors complaining about the loud music and instruments coming from your garage or room? Do you need a place where you can practice your dance moves and routines? The Youth Center has the perfect solution. The GHWR Youth Center is offering local young musicians, dancers, and/or performance artists with an affordable place to hone their crafts. The rehearsal space is a perfect place for band practices and dance rehearsals. The space is a 600 square foot area. The rental will include a microphone and PA sound system that is compatible with a CD or mp3 player. Rules and fees apply; call for more information or to reserve a time slot for rental. The space is only open during drop-in program hours, Monday-Friday, 4-7pm. GUITARS NOT GUNS Ages: The Guitars Not Guns program wants to help prevent violence in schools and on the streets by providing free guitars and lessons to engage youth to use their creativity and divert them from negative influences such as drugs, alcohol and gang-related activities. These lessons are taught by local musicians who are volunteers. This program is always looking for new volunteer instructors, and donated guitars to lend out to the students. Classes are offered year-round. If you have a guitar that you would like to donate, or if you are interested in volunteering, contact the GHWR Youth Center at F.L.Y.E.R.S. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM 1ST - 5TH GRADERS Parents looking for safe, educational and fun activities outside the classroom can take advantage of the F.L.Y.E.R.S. (Fun Loving Youth En Route to Success) After School Program. The program offers character enrichment by combining fun with academics through balanced programming. Students in the program receive homework help, participate in arts and crafts, games and sports and enjoy a delicious snack each day. Pre-registration is required. Transportation from your child s school to our facility is available on a limited basis and you must let us know during the registration process so that we may accommodate your request. (Available only within City limits). You may register your child at the Customer Service Center, 231 Union Street or at Ramsay Park Family Center, 1301 Main Street. Your New York City getaway is filled with endless entertainment and holiday cheer. You ll see the 9/11 Memorial, Greenwich Village, the Wall Street district, Statue of Liberty, Little Italy, Chinatown, the Empire State Building, Central Park, Chelsea Market and see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes. Enjoy an evening out at Times Square where we will attend a Broadway show and dine at a popular Times Square restaurant. Refunds Due to Illness or Injury If, due to illness or injury, a participant is unable to complete a class/program and misses two or more class/program sessions, a partial refund may be granted if requested by the participant (at least 18 years old) or the participant s legal guardian no more than 10 calendar days after the last class meeting. The request must be accompanied by a physician s note stating the participant is unable to complete the class. Class/Program Withdrawals A refund of fees, minus a $10 processing fee, will be issued for class/program withdrawals requested 14 or more calendar days prior to the first day of the class/program. No refunds will be issued for withdrawals requested less than 14 calendar days prior to the first day of the class/program. Class/Program Transfers Requests for transfers must be made 14 or more calendar days prior to the first day of the class/program from which the transfer is requested. All transfers are subject to a $10 processing fee. No transfers will be granted if they are requested less than 14 calendar days prior to the first day of the class/program from which the transfer is requested. Financial Assistance from Recreation Advocates, Inc. Recreation Advocates, Inc. offers financial assistance for recreation programs to youth ages 14 and younger from lower-income families residing in the City of Watsonville. Applications for financial assistance must be submitted to the Parks and Community Services Department Customer Service Office at least 21 calendar days prior to the first day of the activity for which financial assistance is requested. The application must be accompanied by 50% to 75% of the activity fees and Form 1040 or Form 540 for the previous tax year. Financial assistance is limited to 1 activity per youth per calendar year.
