5 Teaching notes Topic: talking about a past trip Linguistic aims Talking about a past holiday; listening for gist and listening for detail; preparing a presentation about a past holiday; deciding which presentation fulfils certain criteria. Exercise 1 Prepares the students for the vocabulary they are going to hear in the recording. In small groups, they have five minutes to come up with as many words as they can, related to the categories in the table. This can be done as a competitive activity. Exercise 2 Before listening, teacher goes through options to make sure students understand what pictures represent. Then, they listen to the recording twice and choose the right option. Answers: 1-c, 2-b, 3-a, 4-a, 5-a, 6-a, 7-b, 8-c Exercise 3 Listening for detail. Students listen again and they try to write down words or expressions which reveal the answer. Exercise 4 Match items in columns. Answers: 1-b, 2-h, 3-d, 4-g, 5-c, 6-e, 7-f, 8-a Exercise 5 Students prepare a mini presentation on a past holiday using the sentence starters from exercise 4. They can record the presentation adding photos, etc. Students then listen to each other s presentation and complete the table. As a plenary activity, they discuss the questions in the second part (who had the longest journey, who stayed the longest etc.). Transcript Me llamo Karina, tengo 19 (diecinueve) años y os voy a hablar un poco de unas vacaciones que tuve con mis primos. Hace un año fuimos a Cuba y pasamos allí 5 (cinco) días, fuimos a Varadero y a La Habana pero la parte que más me gustó de Cuba fue Varadero, que es básicamente la playa más bonita que yo he visitado, creo, y pasamos el 15 (quince) de septiembre allí, que es una fecha importante para Méjico, donde vivo, porque es el día de la independencia de Méjico. En La Habana visitamos el Capitolio, pero fue algo feo para mí porque estaba cerrado y no pudimos entrar. La verdad, me gustaría volver a ir a Cuba porque me pareció un país muy interesante, creo que tiene mucha cultura y las playas son preciosas. La verdad, cuando fuimos para allí, bueno, yo decidí ir para allí porque fue como mi regalo de 18 (dieciocho) cumpleaños, y mis primos me preguntaban que por qué allí y yo no sabía qué decirles, pero cuando estábamos allí descubrí por qué. No sé, es como que todo es precioso y lo disfrutamos mucho y todos queremos ir otra vez allí Page 5 of 5
