Book leveling is a system of establishing text difficulty by evaluating features such as book layout and length, language use, sentence structure, and story elements. Teachers can use this system to determine a gradient of difficulty for each book relative to other similar books. Pearson ed Readers Using DRA and EDL to match children and books Determine each student s Independent using the DRA 2 (page 90) or the EDL 2 (page 93). Using this level, you can determine which books to use to support: Independent Select titles from the identified Independent and one level below to provide a wide variety of practice at a controlled level. Guided (Instructional ) Using the Independent as a starting point, select titles from the level one step above to boost the challenge within the comfort of the guided reading experience. Intervention Select titles from the upper end of the Independent according to the needs of the student, providing small increases in or gradients of instruction.
