2 Page 2 Roberto J. Santos Superintendent Dear United Independent School District Parents/Guardians: It is an honor to present to you this edition of United ISD s Parent Connection. Our mission is to keep the community informed of the District s latest initiatives while highlighting the accomplishments of our students. This final edition of the Parent Connection spotlights the District s continuing growth, our summer school programs and many other activities that occurred during this past school year. I am very proud of the progress that we have made as a school district, thanks to our employees and teachers. I am also in admiration of our students, who continue to excel in academics and extra-curricular activities. It was an honor to attend last week s commencement ceremonies for all four of our high schools. I heartily congratulate our Class of 2015 graduates. Their rite of academic passage is a milestone that we, as an educational family, are very proud of. On behalf of the United ISD Board of Trustees, I would like to thank our parents and families for working with us to give our students the best possible education. Last but not least, I thank all of our employees for contributing to the success of not only our students, but to our District and community as well. In the instructional area, the District is continuing to provide United ISD students with an excellent public school education. Our teachers remain committed to preparing our students for the STAAR and End of Course assessments. Furthermore, we continue to enhance our instructional program by providing additional training to our teachers and staff members I am very pleased that Lyndon B. Johnson High School was recently designated as an Early College High School campus. Approximately 125 students have been selected for the program, which will be initiated during the school year. In the Student Support Services area, I am happy to announce that the construction of Veterans Memorial Elementary School (Elementary #27), is near completion. This campus is scheduled to open in August In addition, construction of the United South High School and United High School 9th Grade campuses has begun. Plans are also being finalized to for the construction of the Lyndon B. Johnson and J.B. Alexander 9th grade campuses. We are also on the cusp of kicking off the second phase of our bond construction program. In closing, I would like to emphasize that we will continue to set high goals in all areas of the District. I thank you for partnering with United ISD to give all of our students the topnotch education and extra-curricular programs they deserve. Best Regards, Roberto J. Santos Congratulations to Alexander High School graduate Cesar E. Guardiola selected as a Class of 2015 Gates Millennium Scholar recipient. Guardiola and 999 other students across the nation were awarded the scholarship which can be used to pursue a degree in any undergraduate major and selected graduate programs at any accredited college or university. Students were selected based on their notable academic achievements, leadership skills, and record of community service. Guardiola maintained a GPA of 4.15 and attended the Alexander Magnet School. He was also an A.P. Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society, Health Occupations Students of America, Student Council, and the Interact Club. His record of community service includes assisting with projects at the South Texas Blood Bank, Sacred Heart Orphanage, Relay for Life, and the Doctor s Hospital Dulce Vida fair. Guardiola plans to attend Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire where he will pursue a career as a physician or surgeon. I thank my family, teachers, and counselors who have mentored me throughout the years, and I also thank God. It is an honor to be one of the chosen few. Receiving the Gates Scholarship affirms my belief that hard work and determination pay off, said Guardiola. Established in 1999 with the goal of developing Leaders for America s Future, the Gates Millennium Scholars Program is funded by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Each year the Gates Millennium Scholars program enables thousands of students to attend and graduate from 800 of the most selective private and public schools in the country, including Ivy League colleges, flagship state universities, and minority-serving institutions. As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others. -Bill Gates Linda Santos, an up and rising senior at J.B. Alexander High School, recently returned from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she was a finalist who participated in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Linda showcased her project, a 3D Electrical Cast used to treat those suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Her project received recognition from the Naval Science Awards Program and the National Taiwan Science Education Center. Linda had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mick Ebeling, an American film, television and commercial executive producer, author, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Ebeling is the founder and CEO of The Ebeling Group, (TEG), a production company based in Venice Beach, California, Not Impossible Labs and the nonprofit The Not Impossible Foundation. Mr. Ebeling encouraged Linda to submit her work to Not Impossible Labs so that they may collaborate to further her project. Linda also had the honor of personally meeting Edward Michael Fincke, an American astronaut, who currently holds the American record for the most time in space. Summer school is a program established by the District to provide eligible students in elementary, middle, and high schools the opportunity to remediate courses in order to obtain credit and/or meet promotional requirements. The District s Summer School Program is specifically designed for students individual needs. At the elementary level, kindergarten thru 5th students are eligible if they have not met promotional requirements and/or are Limited English Proficient. This year, fifteen elementary campuses will be host sites. The middle school program offers courses to students who have failed two or three core academic courses. Additionally, 5th and 8th grade students who did not pass the Reading or Math section of the STAAR exams, will be offered summer accelerated instruction prior to the summer retesting dates. Middle schools will offer a total of five summer school sites. At the high school level, eligible high school students will have the opportunity to take up to two classes to earn course credit. Accelerated instruction for students who fail an End-of Course Assessment or STAAR test will also be available at each high school host site. This year J.B. Alexander High School and Lyndon B. Johnson High School will be host sites. The District expects over 8,000 students to participate in its summer program. The program not only helps students experience educational success but also offers fun in education, great meals, and superior staff to ensure the progress of all students. 4 United ISD is proud to have hosted two special events for our STAR Athletes the Special Olympics for Young Athletes and the Special Olympics for Area 21 Spring Games. At the Young Athletes program, over 245 of United ISD s youngest superstar athletes, ranging in ages from two to seven, competed in games such as basketball dunking and tricycle racing. In addition, over 500 District students participated at the Area 21 games. On hand to lend support were several United ISD administrators, staff, employees, and student volunteers. These programs are committed to providing year-round sport training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for special needs children and adults. The competitions give them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with other families, other Special Olympic athletes, and the community. UISD to Upgrade All Campus Marquees United ISD is currently in the initial phase of a three year plan to replace antiquated school marquees with electronic marquees creating more effective messaging is an easily and obtainable goal since several messages can rotate in sequence and can be switched out/edited with a single keyboard. The new marquees enable each campus to display a multitude of messages, including test dates, holidays, student accomplishments, campaigns, bulletins, and district events. The upgrade to electronic marquees further enhances the district s ability to share important information with students, parents, and the community. The process of installing the new equipment at our campuses began many months ago, and it is projected that 18 UISD campuses will have their new marquees by the end of An additional 16 campuses should have their electronic marquees in operational order by the end of the 2016 school year, said Eduardo Zuñiga, Associate Superintendent Student Support Services. Funds for the marquee project are from the District s general fund. Online Registration for ALL United ISD Students Gone are the days of long registration lines and extensive paper form packets.
