1 March 1, nd Sunday of Lent Holy Name of Mary Parish Serving San Dimas and La Verne and surrounding communities Staffed by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Lent isn t a diet plan, it s a season for growth in faith. Whatever I do for Lent, whatever I give up for Lent is meant, to help me grow in my knowledge and love of God and my mindfulness of God in my daily life.
2 Page 2 Holy Name of Mary Parish March 1, 2015 My dear sisters and brothers, Thank you for your most generous response to Together in Mission. I am most grateful to Terry Monday who coordinated the implementation of the process. The hours of time and choosing to be present at each mass let everything unfold very smoothly. We are gifted to have on our staff Charlie Martinez. In his humble, real, sensitive and faith-filled way shared the story of his life interweaving it with the good things God has done for him, through him, for others. To those who were unable to give last week there is still time and information in the pastoral office. A little girl is sitting on her mothers lap. Looking up into her mother s eyes, she says, Mommy, you have a beautiful face, sparkling eyes and lovely hair. Why are your arms so ugly? Her mother explains: When you were a baby, I left you sleeping alone in your crib one evening, the first time I had ever left you alone in the house. I went down the street to see a neighbor for a few minutes. While I was gone, our house caught fire. When I realized that it was our house that was burning, I raced up the street. I dashed through the flames and grabbed you out of your crib. I held you close to me and tried to protect you from the flames. As we ran to safety, my hands and arms got badly burned. That s why they re so ugly. With tears in her eyes, the little girl looked at her mother s face again. Mommy, you have a beautiful face, sparkling eyes and lovely hair. But your hands and arms are the most beautiful of all. A little girl realizes her mother s devotion to her in the cross of her mother s scars. So many times we are very much unaware of the crosses of others. Crosses always leave scars. He came back as the resurrected one bearing his scars. They were something that linked him to the past but also prepared him for the present. Our Lenten song says heal the wounds but leave a scar, a reminder of how merciful you are. Richard Rohr reminds us. Unless we transform our pain we transmit it. O God who chooses to walk with us and even dwell within us help us to never lose hope, trust your love can transform the darkest nights into mornings of Easter joy. Help us each day, help us to help each other each day, to STAY RISEN. Calm me, quiet me, settle me Steady me, balance me, ground me Plant me, root me, embed me Support me, sustain me, protect me Forgive me, pardon me, free me Refresh me, restore me, heal me Enfold me, embrace me, hold me Lord, hear my prayer today! With my love and prayers as we continue the journey helping each other carry the cross and allowing others to help us. Fr. Rich, SS.CC. Padre Rich, SSCC

5 March 1, nd Sunday of Lent Page 5 Message of Love... Dear Father Rich, I want to sincerely thank you for your sermons dealing with outreach and inclusiveness. They have been very healing to me and have helped bring me back to the Church of my youth, back to my faith. Let me be very clear: although I left the Church, I never left God. I attended Catholic parochial elementary and high school, and my first husband and I were married in the Church, but it ended divorce. My second marriage was a long and happy one, but my husband was not Catholic, and since I was divorced, we were married in a civil ceremony. With the Church's views on divorce many years ago, I felt like an outsider, especially when I got the message loud and clear from the Church that I should refrain from communion because I had divorced and subsequently remarried outside of the Church. Despite this, I hung onto my faith and my Church, and continued to attend mass, and even sent my son to parochial elementary school and high school. What "broke the camel's back" for me with the Church was when my son, while away at college, called to tell us he was gay. No way would I ever stop loving my son or condemn him for this, especially since I had educated myself enough to know that this was not a choice for him but an innate, biological happenstance of nature. When my son "came out to us, the Catholic Church's view on gays and lesbians was one of condemnation, and I wasn't about to stick around to hear the Church's ignorant and sometimes vitriolic messages about this. I chose my son over the Church, and I would never hesitate to do it again. Let me state at this time that my son is a wonderful person who is a health professional. He is happily married to an equally wonderful man who he met in college. He and his husband have been together 25 years, and I consider my son's husband my second son. They are both loved and accepted unconditionally by my family and by his spouse s family. Getting back to the Church, through the years, I noticed that the Church failed to change its views about gays and lesbians, but something was changing in other churches. They began to preach acceptance and inclusiveness to its gay and lesbian brothers and sisters and to the new and different types of families that were being formed, families with two dads or two moms who were providing no less love or opportunities to their children than their heterosexual counterparts. I saw no change in the Catholic Church, until "bingo", Pope Francis was elected. His message was loud and clear to me. It was about love and inclusiveness. What a concept! Isn't this Christ's message after all! I took a chance, and after nearly 40 years away from the Church, I started coming to Holy Name of Mary Parish Church to see if anything had changed. It was there that I heard your sermon, Father Rich, the one where you talked about going to meet with the parents of gay and lesbian children. In your sermon you spoke of the prejudices and biases people are taught, and how we should not judge. Your message was of love, understanding and inclusiveness. Your message swept me in, and got me hooked! This is what I had been waiting to hear, a message of love that calls people like me back to a church for "everyone", a non-judgmental church. The message that day in your sermon confirmed to me what I instinctively knew: God doesn't make mistakes. He makes us all in His image, perfect in every way. And those who have an issue with His creations should take it up with Him. Thank you again, Father Rich, for your messages of love. And I thank Him for you. Sincerely, Patricia Cunningham San Gabriel Valley Magnificat is hosting a prayer brunch with guest speaker Fr. 9 Our 21 New Martyrs By Name Let us remember the names of 21 new martyrs; let us speak their names in remembrance. As they now stand amid the white-robed multitudes and behold the Throne of the Almighty One, let us speak their names in prayer. As they shimmer within the great cloud of witnesses, let us in the Communion of Saints ask their intercession before the Lamb. Let us ponder the increasingly chaotic world in which they were slain; let us consider the people who murdered them, who seem hell-bent on Apocalypse. It feels as though a world full of small fires, public and private, are simply the purposeful distractions meant to prevent our noticing a bonfire in our future. Therefore, let us ask these new martyrs for their prayers: Holy Martyr Milad Makeen Zaky, pray for us, and for the whole world, Holy Martyr Abanub Ayad Atiya, pray for your ISIS murderers, Holy Martyr Maged Solaimain Shehata, pray for their salvation, Holy Martyr Yusuf Shukry Yunan, pray for the release of their all their captives, Holy Martyr Kirollos Shokry Fawzy, pray for all in the path of ISIS, Holy Martyr Bishoy Astafanus Kamel, pray for the displaced, for those made refugees by ISIS, Holy Martyr Somaily Astafanus Kamel, pray for the protection of our Holy Lands and our history, Holy Martyr Malak Ibrahim Sinweet, pray for those who act now in resistance against ISIS, Holy Martyr Tawadros Yusuf Tawadros, pray for those in immediate danger from forces of evil, Holy Martyr Girgis Milad Sinweet, pray for those infected with the virus of hatred and extremism, Holy Martyr Mina Fayez Aziz, pray for families being challenged, throughout the world, by ISIS, Holy Martyr Hany Abdelmesih Salib, pray aid workers may work together unmolested, to give assistance, Holy Martyr Bishoy Adel Khalaf, pray for the targeted clergy and religious of the Near East churches, Holy Martyr Samuel Alham Wilson, pray for all people of good will, in every religion, every nation, Holy Martyr Whose name we do not know you Worker from Awr village pray for those in leadership, whose names we know all too well, that that their motives may be purified of political intrigue, and for their salvation, Holy Martyr Ezat Bishri Naseef, pray for Jews, throughout the world, chosen of God and so despised, Holy Martyr Loqa Nagaty, pray for the two lungs of Christianity, East and West, to breath together, Holy Martyr Gaber Munir Adly, pray for the illumination of that which is All-Good, Holy Martyr Esam Badir Samir, pray that in beholding it, we will wish to serve it, Holy Martyr Malak Farag Abram, pray for the generation in power, that their egos may be put aside and their hearts might be opened to the Way, the Truth and the Life, Holy Martyr Sameh Salah Faruq, pray for the generations to come. O new martyrs, now numbering among the ancients through a malevolent force as old as Eden, keep us particularly in your prayers. Once again, we are focused on the mysterious lands where humanity first came into being, and into knowing, and where all will finally be revealed. Pray that we may put aside all that is irrelevant to the moment and, looking forever to the East, prepare our spirits for the engagements into which we may be called, whether we live amid these places of ancient roads and portals, or in the most modern of dwellings. Mary, the God-bearer, pray for us, Saint Michael the Archangel, pray for us, Saint John the Forerunner, pray for us, All Holy Men and Women, pray for us. Amen, Amen.
