3 Pastor s Notes Last weekend we began our 3-week Archbishop s Annual Appeal. The first weekend each priest gives us a homily on why it is important to reach out to the needy through the appeal. The second week, the archbishop himself comes to us via DVD or CD to once again share the many needs the appeal help our archdiocese respond to and the priest leads us through the in-pew process of making a pledge. The third and final week the priest gives a shortened homily on the scriptures as a lay person once again leads an in-pew pledge process. That is the process of the appeal in full. The Annual Appeal has become a time for Catholics all over the Archdiocese of Baltimore to come together and make a pledge/donation for the poor. The heart of the appeal is that by nature it is (1) more than a one-time collection but rather it is hoped that we will make a pledge to donate over time. I have gotten into the habit of making a pledge over a 10 month period and I see it monthly in my VISA card statement. It is not a bother and is simple to do. I am sure some may choose to simply write a check monthly. (2) While my pledge of $50 a month for 10 months doesn t seem like much (I DO pay much more for my Raven s tickets), when combined with those pledges of so many from around the archdiocese it becomes a significant amount for the Archbishop to use for those who he deems are most in need. Some 25 years ago when I was pastor of St. Lawrence Church in Woodlawn, the Appeal helped us put in handicap ramps all around our campus as well as a handicap accessible bathroom. When at St. Anthony of Padua/Most Precious Blood Church some 17 years ago I received funds to pay for a part-time Youth Minister. Fact is there are so many special projects which parishes around the archdiocese benefit from. I encourage you to consider joining the movement of giving together for the good of the whole archdiocese. A Young Adult, who has not yet begun to give to his or her church, might not naturally think about giving because of his or her status in life. I encourage you to start small and make your first pledge of maybe $5 or $10 each month. The marvelous thing about doing God s work is that when each of us does our own part together it can make a tremendous difference. In Matthew 14: 14 and following we hear how Jesus fed the multitudes with 5 loaves and 2 fish. Jesus used it to feed so many gathered. Last week, we were to complete the second round of Assemblies, with our High School Youth. As these notes were to be submitted before the Assembly on Monday night was to occur, I will wait until next week. On Tuesday, February 11, our Pastoral Council was to begin sorting through all that has been communicated in the first three Assemblies. By then we will have the data from the next three Assemblies to add to that information. I will ask the Council to help figure out effective ways to get the information to you. I will share more information next week. If you know of more groups with whom we should have Assemblies, please let me know. For me, e- mails are an excellent way to communicate that. Thanks! My address is and my cell number is Remember God loves you and so do I. Make it a good week! ~ Father Lou FINANCIAL INFORMATION THIS WEEKEND IS COMMITMENT WEEKEND FOR THE ARCHBISHOPS ANNUAL APPEAL! This year reflects the theme Love Rejoices in the Truth. The Appeal not only funds the operations of the Archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help here in our own parishes. Our parishes receive 25% of each dollar contributed until we reach our respective goals, then our parishes will receive 50% of any funds above that amount. Our parish goals are: Crucifixion: $ 21,600 Good Shepherd: $ 21,000 Holy Trinity: $ 92, 000 Speakers will be at all Masses this weekend to explain the Appeal further. Please answer the Archbishop s request and consider a generous pledge. Thank you for your support CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS have been mailed to all contributing parishioners from our 3 parishes. If you have any questions about your statement, contact our bookkeeper Judy at ext. 12. ATTN: ENVELOPE AND NON-ENVELOPE USERS - Please note that, at this time, the recent communication (see Sunday bulletin Feb 9, 2014) in change to the recording of loose checks has been rescinded. Until our Finance Council members have reviewed and made recommendations on our three-parishes audit report, our recording of loose checks will remain in practice. We apologize for the confusion. HAITI OUTREACH COMMITTEE I did not know what to expect when I traveled to Haiti in July of I had certainly seen many, many photos and knew that the number of children attending summer camp was close to 300. I did not expect to be greeted by such a large number of them as we were arriving, several hours after camp had ended for the day. The fact that so many chose to stay and greet us was quite humbling. As we wandered into the center of the school yard, we were surrounded by a sea of children. Shy but curious, they greeted us by holding our hands, touching our arms, and returning our smiles. At that point, I knew I was where I was supposed to be. JOIN OUR MUSIC MINISTRIES! Crucifixion Contemporary Music Group is looking to expand. We are in need of musicians (especially keyboard and guitars/bass) and vocalists. Must have transportation for rehearsals, both occasional evening rehearsals and also one hour prior to any 11 AM Sunday Mass you would serve. To list the musical gifts you can offer Our Lord in praise and worship, please Kate at to schedule an audition. The Good Shepherd Parish Choir is looking to expand. All are welcome to join us as we give glory to God and lead His people in worship. We rehearse on Wednesday nights from 6:30 PM to 8 PM in the choir loft, and sing for the 11:30 AM Mass every Sunday and for Holy Days. No audition needed. Cantors are also needed. Call the parish office or see Scott after any Masses at Good Shepherd if you are interested. The Holy Trinity Adult Choir will begin rehearsals in February for the Triduum and Easter services. Rehearsals will be held on Monday and Thursday evenings at 6 PM in the Church. We are looking for new members who have a basic knowledge of music. It is a short-term commitment that is very rewarding! Contact the Parish Center. PARTNERS IN CARE is a local community non-profit in need of your help. Classes meet on Sunday mornings, from 9:00 10:20 AM in the Msgr. Slade School. Our ministry is hoping to work with new volunteers and have them prepared for classes in the school year. Some people may not be called to teach each week, for these individuals we have the option of being placed on our substitute lists. Yo la he vivido y he dado mi vida por amor. No existía semejante mandamiento.
