NOTICIAS NOTICIAS NACIONALES LOCALES - NATIONAL - LOCAL NEWS CALIFORNIA FARM WORKER: PICKING PEAS SHOULD BRING A BETTER LIFE First Person by Rosalia Martinez, New America Media Editor s note: In this last installment in a three-part series on California farm workers by NAM contributor David Bacon, an undocumented Triqui Indian farm worker in Greenfield, California speaks of poverty and health problems as the result of long hours working in the fields. Her story, as told to Bacon, helps contextualize the struggles of many farm workers in California who are working at a time of the drought and dwindling jobs availabilities, and without health care. I m Triqui, from Rio Venado in Oaxaca. I ve been here seven years, working in the fields all the time. Right now I m picking peas. Other times in the year I work in the broccoli. The worst part about working in the peas is that you have to work on your knees. After a day on your knees they hurt a lot, and when you stop it s hard to extend your leg. It hurts, even when they give you a break for 15 minutes every two hours. I don t take pills for the pain, but I know many people who do. Sometimes your knees break down. That s happened to a lot of people. Their knees go out permanently and they can t work anymore. Another problem is the dust, which has chemicals in it. Until two years ago they didn t give you glasses to keep the dust out. Now they do, but by now most people who work in the peas have problems with their eyes. What they pay us is not fair. They want you to pick 130 pounds in 10 hours, and the piece rate is 45 cents, so we make very little. The hourly wage is supposed to be $9.50 per hour, but when you re working on the piece rate it s less. You can make $100 in a day sometimes, but other times it s $80 or $70. It depends on how much you can pick. I have a family I have to support. There are six of us myself and my husband, and our four children. These wages aren t enough. We live in an apartment and have to pay rent, electricity and food. The little they pay us doesn t cover it. It s a disaster if anyone gets sick because we don t have any insurance. If it s not really bad we don t go to the doctor. But if it s really serious we have to, and then we end up owing a lot of money. We re just now recovering from the last time we had to do this. We had to take one of the kids and didn t have the money to pay. Normally we get six months every year when we can work all the time. Other times work is hard to find. A paycheck for a week is $300, or even $100. When the work is good we try to save a little for the times when work slows down. The majority of the people in my crew are Triqui. There are also Mixtecos, and people who speak Spanish. Almost everyone is indigenous. The Triqui people don t agree with the low wages. We want a salary that our work deserves. The boss now says they have a water crisis, but I really think he says this to intimidate us. When we complain about the wages they tell us, If you want to work, there s the work, and if you don t, so what? What can we do? If people get together and demand more, I think things could change. But instead we stay quiet. Many of my coworkers are afraid they ll lose their jobs. I heard about what was happening in San Quintin on Facebook [when thousands of indigenous Triqui and Mixtec farm workers went on strike in Baja California this spring]. I worked down there for a number of years, picking tomatoes. They paid really low there. I think what they did there was really good. They tried to do something for themselves. We agree with what they did. We come from the same towns. We re brothers. We are the same community. We are indigenous people, and we have to do whatever we can to keep our children eating, no matter what they pay. But if we don t work and harvest the crops, there s nothing for the growers either. We are thinking of doing something like they did in San Quintin. What we demand from the growers is that they recognize that just as we work for them, they should work for us. Things should be more equal between us. I m going to keep working in the fields, because I have no other work. But I don t want my children to work in the fields. We re doing it so that our children can leave the fields and move forward. I want to give them a better life.

CAUSA CELEBRATES NATIONAL CITIZENSHIP DAY ON SEPTEMBER 19 6 Septiembre 2015 By Andrea Miller, Causa In celebration of National Citizenship Day, Causa and organizations that support immigrant communities across the country will host events throughout September to assist eligible lawful permanent residents (LPRs) to apply for naturalization. Just this year, over 2,000 Oregon immigrants have become naturalized U.S citizens. This is a milestone achievement, and Causa congratulates those who have completed the process and gained the benefits of U.S. citizenship! Jorge Perez, born in the Dominican Republic, was one of those 2,000 who became a U.S. citizen this year. When asked about why he chose to pursue U.S. citizenship, Jorge said, The only reason I wanted to become a U.S citizen is to have a better opportunity, a better chance. The benefits of naturalization include the right to vote and run for public office, apply for certain jobs reserved for U.S. citizens, the possibility to apply for other family members to seek legal immigration status, and protection from deportation. According to the Migration Policy Institute, immigrants who naturalized often experience greater economic mobility, and tend to have higher incomes and home ownership rates. Causa s Citizenship Day Workshop will be the latest in our ongoing efforts to support immigrants in acquiring the rights of U.S. citizenship and exercising their rights by being civically engaged community members. The Citizenship Day Workshop will take place on Saturday, September 19 in Marion County. Causa, volunteer attorneys, and trained volunteers will help individuals complete the Application for Naturalization (Form N-400), as well as assist qualified applicants with a fee waiver to waive the $680 application fee. Applicants who complete the N-400 at the workshop will receive free study materials to prepare for their naturalization interview. Call the Causa office at for more information regarding this event.

Muchisimas gracias! BREASTFEEDING: LIBERATING AND EMPOWERING WOMEN By Linda Roman, Oregon Latino Health Coalition La Esquina de Salud is created by the Oregon Latino Health Coalition and is dedicated to the Oregon Latino community. La Esquina de Salud is an educational forum for information and resources about health and wellness for our community. In the last month of August, families and community groups across the country celebrated National Breastfeeding Month. Breastfeeding is a super tool to ensure a healthy life for the new baby and mother. Like all new parents the postpartum period comes with many changes and decisions. For three sisters, Andrea Valderrama, Ana del Rocio Valderrama and Isabella Valderrama, the decision to breastfeed all of their children was a decision to reclaim their culture and history, connect, and nourish their babies. Ana Valderrama, mother of two, expressed, I chose to exclusively breastfeed my son. In a way it was a continuation of firsts for me as a Latina: first-generation U.S.-born, first-generation college graduate, and first-generation to return to breastfeeding I see breastfeeding as another way that I have reclaimed my health, my power, and my liberation. Georgina Mora, Lactation Consultant, reported, To this day it has not been possible to create another substitute with equal or better nutritional composition and preventative [substance] as breast milk. Breastmilk is a living substance that changes with the developmental and growing needs of the baby. Moreover, beyond being just a super food, the act of breastfeeding alone is so important for the development, intelligence and emotional development of the baby all throughout its life. There is great truth behind the fact that maternal milk is the ideal nourishment for babies to ensure the best start in life. The changes in the breast milk composition take direction from the nutritional needs and gestational age of the baby. From a study of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db05.htm), Latina women are leaders in breastfeeding. More than 80 percent of Latina mothers breastfeed their baby right after birth. Additionally, Latina women breastfeed their children all through the first 12 months of life, overpassing any other ethnic group in the country. Although the benefits of breastfeeding are substantial, realistically there are major barriers that limit families that desire to breastfeed and express milk. Mora added, In Oregon, there are laws that recognize and protect the right to breastfeed and the expression of breast milk for all working mothers. The employer must provide a clean, private space other than the bathroom to express milk or breastfeed if possible. The normalization of maternal breastfeeding in the workplace is an important piece to ensure positive health and promoting breastfeeding for families. Breastfeeding should be treated by law like a normal part of the work routine, as equal as taking break time or lunch at work. The laws in Oregon define this even more, describing the time used for breastfeeding to be considered as a break time, of 30 minutes without pay for every four hours of work. This means that there are already existing protections for new mothers returning to work. There is also support and laws that can guide an employer with this process to ensure the law is being upheld. (See below.) For new mothers who want to seek support with beginning to talk to their employer about breastfeeding or expressing milk in the workplace or need information, the Breastfeeding Coalition of Oregon is able to support mothers so they can find a solution that works for them at no cost. It is critical that as a community we support new families and working mothers. Breastfeeding helps prepare and BREASTFEEDING page 17 September

LATINOS IN OREGON Nuestra Comunidad - Our Community By Alberto Moreno, Chair of Oregon Commission on Hispanic Affairs Every year, this nation pauses for a brief moment to celebrate the contributions of Latinos in the U.S. contributions which are considerable. For example: According to recent market studies, the buying power of Hispanics in the Portland metropolitan area represents over $7 billion per year. (Source: Selig Center for Economic Growth, Univ. of Georgia) Oregon is one of the top 10 fastest growing Latino populations in the U.S. Today, there are over 1.5 million Hispanic-owned firms in the U.S. that generate over $200 billion in sales. (Source: U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce) The number of Hispanic firms in the U.S. increased over 76 percent between 1987 and Oregon economy: The number of Latino-owned businesses increased 320 percent since 1992, from 3,538 to 11,339 firms, which generated over $1.6 billion in revenue. (Source: U.S. Economic Census) In addition to our economic and cultural contributions, it is worth noting that 60,000 Latinos become eligible to vote each and every month a political reality that political parties ignore at their own risk. In Oregon we are over 500,000 strong. We make up the backbone of Oregon s most important industries, including but not limited to an agricultural workforce numbering more than 150,000 who not only generate business in excess of $5.5 billion per year but pay state and federal income taxes. But we are also doctors, lawyers, judges, teachers, researchers and now policy makers. While many of the celebrations across the nation are largely symbolic in nature, Oregon has an opportunity to engage in meaningful inclusion of Latinos not just through symbolic celebrations but through real systemic, structural and legacy policy change. The Commission on Hispanic Affairs stands ready to make Oregon a place that all of our communities can proudly call home. As Chair for this august commission, I am proud to include here the Hispanic Heritage Proclamation to be signed by Governor Kate Brown in recognition of the invaluable contributions made by the 500,000 Latinos who live, pray and work in Oregon. 8 Septiembre

NOTICIAS RÉGIONALES - REGIONAL NEWS PCUN CELEBRATES 30 YEARS IN OREGON PHOTOS COURTESY OF PCUN/ FOTOS CORTESÍA DE PCUN 10 Septiembre 2015 By TJ Acena During the 1960s and 70s, Oregon saw an increase in raids on farm workers in the Willamette Valley. At the time, the Immigration and Naturalization Service could detain and deport anyone for simply looking illegal. The Willamette Valley Immigration Project (WVIP) was founded in 1977 in response to these raids, providing legal advice and representation to Latino farm workers and tree planters. In 1985 WVIP became Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (in English, Northwest Tree Planters and Farm Workers United, or PCUN), and is now the largest Latino organization, and union, in Oregon. Based out of Woodburn, PCUN is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It still does the work it was doing as WVIP, providing legal advice and representation, but has expanded the ways it helps empower farm workers in Oregon. One of the major changes the organization has seen is a shift to policy work. In 2004 PCUN worked with Oregon legislators to ensure paid rest breaks for farm workers. Most farm workers still work for a piece rate, being paid for how much produce they pick in a day, which disincentivizes workers from taking breaks. Oregon was only the fifth state to guarantee paid rest breaks for farm workers. Over the years the organization also worked to organize labor actions and implement union contracts with local farms to increase pay for farm workers. On national and state levels, PCUN works to stop legislation that targets farm worker communities such as Oregon House Bill 2043, which would require businesses to use E-Verify, preventing them from hiring undocumented workers. While labor practices are one of the most pressing issues facing farm workers today, immigration is still a major policy issue for PCUN. This issue affects not only farm workers in Spanish-speaking communities but also other immigrant communities, says Vice President Brenda Mendoza. We re working with other organizations to be able to implement the deferred action plan that President Obama announced back in November of last year, but ultimately what we want is immigration reform with a clear path to citizenship. Ramon Ramirez, the President of PCUN, has been with the organization since the beginning and seen a lot of the changes firsthand: Conditions have improved because of our presence, but we have a long ways to go still. Farm workers are still some of the lowest paid workers in America. The last survey of farm workers by the U.S. Department of Labor, published in 2005, found that on average individual farm workers earn between $10,000 and $12,499 nationally. They are literally paying the price to put food on the American table, says Ramirez. The life expectancy for a farm worker is 49 years old. 300,000 farm workers are poisoned on a yearly basis by pesticides, they are 25 percent more likely to have cancer, and women are 50 percent more likely to have miscarriages. Farm workers are one of the most vulnerable populations in America, caught between harsh living and working conditions and a lack of legal protections. We have a constituency with a lot of different needs, says Jaime Arredondo, Secretary-Treasurer of Brought to you by: PQ Monthly, El Hispanic News, and Tankside BRILLIANTBUCKS.COM MONTHLY PCUN, illiteracy, language barriers, documentation issues, and lack of trust in the government. It s not easy. Part of their efforts to raise the political awareness of the community they serve has been breaking into broadcasting. In 2006 PCUN started a low-power FM radio station in Woodburn. Called Radio Movimiento, it broadcasts Spanish- and indigenous-language programming 24/7 for farm workers in the area, featuring entertainment, news and interviews with progressive leaders from Latino communities from the U.S. and Latin America. Increasing the representation of Latinos in Oregon and creating a stronger movement is also one of PCUN s long-term goals. It s time to have representation that reflects our community, says Arredondo. Especially here in the Willamette Valley where we see a majority-minority. If you look across the state, at school boards and city councils, there is just no representation. We only have three Latino representatives on the state legislature that s ridiculous. I think it s time to step up and develop the future leaders of our communities. Arredondo himself is an example of the leaders PCUN hopes to cultivate. He became involved in the organization after his parents came looking for legal assistance. A lot of our staff has a similar story, says Arredondo. If you come here you ll meet people like Ramon who have been here forever and the sons and daughters of those people. PCUN celebrates its 30th Anniversary on September 17, 6-8 p.m., at SEIU Portland, 6401 SE Foster Road, Portland. Tickets are on sale at their website, pcun.org. Look for ONLINE LOCAL DEALS NEAR YOU!

13 ARTE Y ENTRETENIMIENTO - ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT JESSICA LAGUNAS: THE ARTIST WHO SERVES By Olga Sanchez Artists understand that the nature of their work is to share their heart, mind, talent and skills through their creative expression, but it is the rare artist who also shares her gifts for the benefit of other artists. Photographer and dancer Jessica Lagunas is just such a person. Working tirelessly for several years as the Coordinator of the Latino Artists exchange/intercambio de artistas Latinos, she has helped strengthen the growing network of artists of all disciplines, supporting unique opportunities for the artists to socialize, receive professional and artistic training, and showcase their work. Lagunas grew up with an appreciation for beauty. She was born in the city of Toluca, in the state of Mexico, where the most beautiful botanical garden and the most exotic stained glass in the country are found. A decade ago, she arrived in Portland and from her first encounter with the city she knew that she would make her life here, and would stay for a good while. Her instinct proved correct; a few short months later she met the love of her life, her husband Max, who has been by her side on this journey ever since. The truth is that Lagunas does not know exactly what it was that attracted her to this city. She wonders if it might have been the strange vibe in the streets of the Northwest district. She worked there for a while and found the sensations, and smells of the trees, charmed her whenever she walked through the neighborhood. She knows that soon after, as she began to make friends and talk a little more with locals, she grew fond of Portland s culture, its way of life and its people. Her first friend, Julius, made art on the covers of disposable lighters. He remains a presence in her life to this day although he leaves Portland often on his travels, they still manage to run into each other unexpectedly. He invited her to her first Alberta Street festival, where she began to have a clearer picture of why she was in Portland. Little by little over the years she fell in love with the art, the environment, the culture, the rain, the coffee, downtown, the parks, southern Oregon, northern Oregon, and the people. She attributes her good fortune to this appreciation for her adopted land. Gifts arrived to support her life in Portland, such as friends who have encouraged her love of photography, people with whom she s shared the same tastes and those with whom she s been able to develop this art. However, though she takes marvelous photos she remains shy about showing her work publicly. Again, art is about expression, and so Lagunas has found another medium through with which to connect with the public, the indigenous and traditional dance of Mexico. As a member of the Xochipilli Aztec dance group, she performs in ceremonies that celebrate special events across cultures, connecting with the Northwest Native American community. As committed as she is to exploring and strengthening her skills in photography and dance, she is passionate about fortifying the Latino artistic community of Oregon. Indeed, she considers this one of the best gifts in her life the opportunity and support she has received from Milagro, which launched the Latino Artists exchange in 2009, to serve as the project s coordinator. Over the past six years, in partnership with Milagro s artistic director, Lagunas has worked on numerous creative and multidisciplinary workshops, major art exhibits, performance showcases (such as the recent Música on Main Street at the Portland 5 Antoinette Hatfield Hall) and the annual conferences that have brought together artists hailing from all over Latin America to grow from their shared experiences. The LAX IdeAL has kept Lagunas at the center of her artistic environment, connected to a wide group of artists and aware of what is happening in the Portland Latino arts scene. Without a doubt, the love and loyalty she has for this project will keep her connected to her people for many more years. She knows this is her path, and that of her colleagues, the artists who now call Oregon their home. Her dream is that together they will continue sowing and harvesting successes. As a true a lover of art, both as a practitioner and an advocate, Lagunas is dedicated to tending to the garden in which she also flourishes. September

POLITICA - POLITICS THE RISE OF TRUMP: CAUSE AND EFFECT By Vicente Guzman-Orozco We re still more than a year from the election of a new president for the U.S., but the world cannot take their eyes away from the most unlikely of characters in this contest: Donald Trump. A few months ago the somewhat boring conversation concerned if the name on the mailbox of the White House in 2017 would again be Bush or Clinton. But since the Realtor, businessman and TV star announced his campaign under the banner of the Republican Party this past June 16, he alone has dominated the headlines and conversations. It was not the first time Trump encouraged rumors of a candidacy, but most reporters and analysts found the idea more suitable for a comedy or reality TV, while comedians saw him as a gift from heaven. His lack of political experience, financial privacy, and outsized personality were obvious reasons to discount him, and when he put all that and more in display during the speech launching his campaign, many pundits saw it as one of his calls for attention for a product or program. Many of his statements might have been ignored as conservative red meat or publicity stunts (e.g., mocking Secretary of State John Kerry, and his ongoing fight to see President Obama s birth certificate), but it was his insulting remarks about Mexico and undocumented immigrants that set all social and news media on fire. Among policies with elusive details and other key phrases to inflame his Republican base, Trump used the foreign policy of the current president to launch an attack against illegal immigration, culminating in a characterization of immigrants, especially Mexicans, as rapists although I assume there are some good ones, he clarified while accusing the Mexican government of exporting its problems. The response was immediate, and instantly politicians and celebrities began making public their condemnation of the insulting tycoon (including Twitter battles with the interior minister of Mexico, M. A. Osorio Chong, and even against El Chapo Guzman). Many in the political establishment hoped that the billionaire s flame would go out then, but it had lit a powder keg on the conservative end of the Republican Party that makes up the Tea Party. By August and the time of the first debate among the 10 leading Republican candidates, the uncontrollable furor of public opinion had Trump as undeniable leader and the erstwhile favorite, Bush the younger, as one of the [many] others. Predictions also they hinted at a resounding defeat if confronting the presumed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, but nothing could contain the growing support for the man Canadian Press nicknamed the sultan of insult. Among others aggrieved by the magnate were Megyn Kelly, debate hostess and journalist, as well as decorated former military, Arizona senator and former presidential candidate John McCain, but as the Canadian article pointed out, his history of slurs is as long as Trump s career itself. Even more recently, the reporter Jorge Ramos was removed by force from a press conference when he confronted the billionaire asking for details of his proposals for immigration reform. Go back to Univision, said the presidential hopeful, echoing one of the nativist and hurtful phrases launched against Latinos in this country. That echo is much more than a reaction of discomfort in the right, as many political researchers have theorized; according to Salon.com, there is great danger in the favorable attention and support supremacist and nativist groups are giving to Trump. David Duke, a former national leader of the KKK, along with several other supremacist leaders, has made public his alignment with THE RISE OF TRUMP page 17 Your LOCAL full-service marketing agency that will connect you with the diverse populations of Oregon and SW Washington Visita nuestra sección de anuncios clasificados en línea Check out our online classified ads section September

* Sales to Hispanics outpacing the market. autonews. com, mayo LEXUS ES 300: THE LEXUS IS ALSO FOR HISPANICS 16 Septiembre 2015 By Roger Rivero In a recent article in Automotive News (autonews.com) entitled Sales to Hispanics outpacing the market, ** a senior executive of Toyota said that One in five Lexus LS is sold to Hispanics, adding: People hear this and say, Hispanics have enough money to buy a Lexus? Contrary to what Mr. Trump thinks, we do buy Lexus and other luxury brands as well. We like the quality, good finish and efficiency of a good product and therefore we consume it. This week we tested a Lexus of the ES series, a 300 in its hybrid version. Not many manufacturers are producing hybrid luxury sedans. Lexus took the risk early, and has managed to refine the operation of these vehicles like a good craftsman carving their piece. Buyers in this segment may be inclined to the ES 300 hybrid for its tremendous fuel efficiency, 40 miles per gallon in the city and 39 on the highway. These excellent numbers will fall when the driver discovers a good-sized round button surrounded by labels with three options: Eco, Normal and Sport. As John a vet (now deceased) who every Friday would go to Costco and stop and sample at every food stall would say, Oh boy... Oh boy. Toyota has refined the behavior of their cars in Sport mode and I ve enjoyed it in the ES 300. The car is transformed, and you see it first on the board, where the tachometer configuration changes and everything turns red. The throttle response is much faster, and speeds delay enough to take advantage of the combined power of the two engines (200 horsepower), adding admirable agility for a sedan of this size. The ES 300 is a car designed for the comfort of the ride and not to venture into wild runs on narrow roads. Despite the sport metamorphosis, on long trips is where the Lexus shows its best vigor. At cruising speed on the highway, this car keeps the cabin virtually impenetrable of outside noise. One of the few things that can be criticized in the interior is the infotainment system. Toyota needs a new version of this increasingly vital part of the car. Competitors are making efforts for these systems to be intuitive, have userfriendly, easy-to-read menus, and to be overall organic and fluid to the sight, elements that the ES 300 mostly lacks. Although this Lexus is one of the few hybrid sedans currently on the market, the manufacturer has seen fit to provide good features to its core models: reverse camera, automatic collision warning, sunroof, remote for the garage, automatic temperature control, and Mark Levinson audio system and others. Of course there are Premium packages that increase the features and price. Expect to pay at least $40,580 to take one home, and if you prefer more splendor and features such as the Ultra Luxury package with bamboo finish, heated driver and passenger seats with memory, park assist and more, the bill will rise to about $47,000. Lexus remains competitive in the line of luxury sedans, and retains the advantage of being one of the few daring to include hybrid versions of them. It would serve to recall that old saying, Those ahead don t go far if those behind run well, signed: Audi A6, Acura TLX, Cadillac CTS and Infiniti G, among others. ** Sales to Hispanics outpacing the market, autonews.com, May 18,

Bush, cuya esposa nació en THE RISE OF TRUMP Continued from page 15 Trump s proposals, which include the construction of a border wall (funded by Mexico and Mexicans in the United States), deportation (and self-deportation ) of millions of people, and withdrawal of the right to citizenship by birth on U.S. soil. Trump critic and reporter Jorge Ramos hoped to confront him directly with what he calls empty promises, as the wall would be impossible to build or finance (an imperfect fence would cost over $23 billion), the immigrant population contributes to the economy (and does not affect crime statistics), and the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is interpreted to confer natural citizenship since its ratification. However, the tycoon is not the only one who supports such ideas, impractical as they may be. Cruz, and Rick Santorum have expressed their support, and Carly Fiorina did so in part, with the distinction that she supports legalization options. Bush, whose wife was born in Mexico, has called Trump s plan impractical, but his positions, considered moderate, are not gaining him support in the polls which continue listing the extravagant candidate as leader. Either because of his name recognition, or his self-funded campaign (which has earned him accusations of buying attendance and coverage for events), or because of the peculiarities of statistics with their margins of error, many Republicans are still answering Trump to all questions. There is still more than a year until the election. Meanwhile, we will continue hearing the progress of this elephant race, but past statistics make us both encouraged and fearful: Usually the leader at this point does not win the nomination... unless you have a lead like Trump s. This also means that less work will be missed due to having a sick child, because children who are breastfed are overall healthier throughout their lives. Mora said, Breastfeeding is normal and healthy. When moms nurse their babies they lower the risk of ear infections, stomach viruses, respiratory and skin infections, obesity, Type 1 and 2 diabetes, leukemia, sudden death syndrome (SDS) is reduced, breast and ovarian cancer, osteoporosis, postpartum depression, among others are significantly reduced. In addition, mothers who breastfeed have a faster recovery after childbirth. The family, partners, employer, health insurance and the community all play a major role in the success of breastfeeding mothers. Looking ahead, Isabella Valderrama said, I think breastfeeding success could also be directly related to pregnancy and birth experiences as well as general knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding for both mom and baby. I ve had such a positive experience breastfeeding that I ve considered becoming a lactation consultant, doula, and midwife, just so that I can encourage and teach moms and dads about the miracle of pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding. For more information about breastfeeding or beginning to express milk in the workplace the Breastfeeding Coalition of Oregon (breastfeedingor.org) can provide excellent support and consultation. Georgina Mora, Lactation Consultant, can be reached at Additionally, parents seeking information and employers seeking technical assistance about the expression of milk in the workplace can visit this link from the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI): oregon.gov/boli/ta/docs/t_faq_ expression_of_breast_milk2.pdf.
