Our theme, United in the Feast, is reflective of who we are as a People of God. The Diocese of Fresno is blessed with its cultural diversity, which we celebrate in our parishes. But when we gather at the table, we are one in our worship of our Lord and in our sharing in the feast. What better way to celebrate than by gathering together in a day of prayer, worship, and community? I hope that as you look through what we have to offer this year at our Diocesan Congress and Youth Day, you will find presentations that will nourish you and help sustain your ministry. On behalf of the Office of Ministries staff, we look forward to seeing you at Congress and Youth Day, and we thank you for your commitment to serving God s People! Blessings! Rose M. Hernandez Director 3

4 welcome DIOCESE OF FRESNO PASTORAL CENTER 1550 NORTH FRESNO STREET FRESNO, CALIFORNIA TELEPHONE (559) My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It is a great joy to welcome you as you attend our annual Diocesan congress in Visalia. October 11-12, 2014, marks the 26th gathering of ministers and sixth gathering of youth throughout the Diocese, and some wonderful experiences which have been planned for the weekend. It is a wonderful opportunity to center your life on the Eucharist renewing your spirit, mind and heart. Through the workshops, prayer, and the gathering of God s people, we strengthen the Body of Christ to live day by day, as our theme says, United in the Feast. We are called to live out our faith in action and teach others by our example. By putting into practice, like the seed sown in fertile soil, his word will bear fruit in your life. Our congress offers opportunities of learning and growing in the knowledge of our faith and a special time to gather in prayer and liturgy with brothers and sisters all over the diocese. It is an important part of our ministry, one in which every parish should take part. I hope to see you at Congress 2014! Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Armando X. Ochoa, D.D. 11 keynote speaker / conferencia principal One Table, One Sacred Journey, One Great Circle of Friendship REVEREND PATRICK J. TWOHY, S.J. In the Eucharist the Risen Jesus teaches us and empowers us to live a most noble way of life together. We must learn to be quiet in our inmost being to receive all that Jesus wishes to share with us. We must also be generous in reaching out to those who cry out to us for help. The Lifeway taught among the Coast Salish Native Peoples also teaches us and empowers us to live in this noble manner. We all participate together in one sacred journey made holy by the blood and tears of Jesus and the blood and tears of our Beloved and Ancestors who have gone ahead of us. The Spirit shared with us in the Eucharist and in the Coast Salish prayers, songs, and teachings opens our minds and hearts to a path of limitless, selfless, generous love. This makes possible our participation in an expanding circle of friendship that includes all living ones in the seen and unseen world. We all live in one dwelling place, one Sacred Home; the world of our experience and the world yet to come, the world seen and the world unseen, the world familiar to us and the world revealed only to the graced and loving heart. REVEREND PATRICK J. TWOHY, S.J. Father Patrick Twohy is a Jesuit priest who has worked with Native American peoples in the Pacific Northwest for over forty years. He has published two books: Finding a Way Home: Indian and Catholic Spiritual Paths of the Plateau Tribes and Beginnings, a Meditation on Coast Salish Lifeways.
